K-70 metering issues

Most consumer monitors and TVs are usually set too bright for photographic use. They need to appeal the average user, who wants to see movies and videogames.
I think it's almost mandatory to profile a monitor in order to use it for photography. It's kinda easy with a calibrator, especially one which can check luminance (good values for post processing are around 120 cadelas per square meter, which will probably look kinda dark to you at the beginning).

Regarding saturation, I feel this picture could do with a little bit more, but apart from that I think it's fine :)

thanks Adam !
I`ve emailed the image to a friend and checked on his pc and indeed it looks very different (less bright and more saturated), I`ve done some adjustments to my pc screen (-:
I knew the colour was off on my pc but never noticed it being too bright until today !
Many thanks (-:

Chris

DPR's K1ii Re-shoot is up: Score now 80%

^ Yes. That chip seems to work great on APS-C cameras, but no so much on FF cameras. The fine detail seems to get lost ever so slightly as the ISO climbs, but in the end, the IQ of the K-1II still beats the IQ of the K-70 & KP at similar ISOs. They should have put more effort into the AF system instead. That's one area that would have helped the K-1II a lot.

Hopefully they put more effort into the AF system of the upcoming K-3II replacement. They already have the IQ for it. :)

Of course it is!

'Wireless' just means 'without wires'.

Perhaps you are thinking of 'WiFi', a different term?

I also have a science and engineering background and can't understand your confusion, to be honest. :)

I agree with the OPs concern. IMO: This is an unnecessary defeaturing which reminds me of the petty product level "differentiation" within the Nikon line of DSLR.

The same situation with PF's tests - loss of details of K-1II. It's pity that there is NR in RAW....
Need new firmware for K-1II.

I think DPR's findings validate our preliminary conclusions about the K-1 II. Overall there is noticeable noise reduction applied, but it does come at the expense of detail. No free lunch here, since the sensor is unchanged.

But since this level of pixel-peeping is required to spot differences between raw files, for all practical purposes, IMO, it's a question of personal preference. Both cameras are good.

I have upgraded after a long long period. My K100D served me well. Now I have upgraded to K-70 with 55-300 plm lens. I also have 18-135 mm DA WR lens and an FA 50/1.4 . This is kinda adequate lens setup for the time being. This is one of the early shots.
Cropped, Auto adjusted, no other PP. Pentax 55-300 mm was used at highest tele.

I agree with the original author and disagree with you.
If you name Pentax's move an innovation, then how would you describe all the amazing new upgrades by other manufacture? I'm a die hard pentax fan, but also own another brand and I can tell you with confidence that Pentax isn't at innovative as what we advertise. Innovation isn't just about producing something new. One should be able to measure its ourcome. Is pixelshift more crucial for a photographer or blazingly fast AF with larger buffer size? Look what sony has done with their AF system and eye tracking feature. This is more productive and appealing to photographers than what pentax has done.
People may have noticed what you describe as pentax innovation, but it's not appealing enough for them to switch brands or use Pentax as a second system.
I know this forum is so biased towards pentax including myself, but truth needs to be said and heard. PENTAX has taken a very poor marketing and business strategy over the past few years. Pentax needs more revenue generated by non-pentax shooters than by its own fans in order to survive and keep up with today's photographer needs. Ricoh can not and will not invest in newer technology as we just witnessed, rebadging its current inventory and switching the main citcuit board.

5. SAFOX 12 with 33 sensor points and full-frame-proportioned AF frame

Thanks to the SAFOX 12 AF sensor module with 33 AF sensors (25 cross-type sensors positioned in the middle), the PENTAX K-1 Mark II optimizes the autofocus process, and assures high-speed autofocus operation in the AF.S (AF Single) mode. The center sensor and two sensors located just above and below it are designed to detect the light flux of an F2.8 lens, making it easy to obtain pinpoint focus on a subject when using a large-aperture lens. Its AF Tracking algorithm has also been revised to improve tracking accuracy of fast-moving subjects in the AF.C (AF Continuous) mode.

That is an interesting blurb to me. They seem to be speaking specifically of the mark II having improvements in AF.C?

here is the blurb about autofocus from the K-1 mark 1:

QuoteQuote:

4. Newly developed SAFOX 12 with 33 sensor points and full-frame-proportioned AF frame

The K-1 features a newly developed SAFOX 12 AF sensor module with an expanded AF frame covering the full-frame image field with 33 AF sensors (25 cross-type sensors positioned in the middle). The center sensor and the two sensors located just above and below it are designed to detect the light flux of an F2.8 lens, making it easy to obtain pinpoint focus on a subject when using a large-aperture lens. Working together with the advanced PENTAX Real-Time Scene Analysis System, this AF system assures much improved AF tracking performance when photographing fast-moving subjects.

Or is that still referring to a comparison of it and SAFOX 11?

Most of the 'upgrade' is in the words people skip on their rush to the specs .... the 'accelerator' {whatever that is} and the new stuff that seems to make the pixel shift more useful.

The specs look good, they don't seem to showcase a "substantial" improvement over the older K1 but then again the K1 is already a great camera. I don't see any specs on the sensor. Looks to me like an v1.5 upgrade rather than a 2.0.

Yeah, they might have to do something like that - the Pentax identity is so wrapped up in the Pentaprism, but even then they would have to come up with a few lenses for the new mount, and they seem to have trouble coming up with lenses needed to support the K-1.

Looks very strange, I would suspect a mechanical problem. Do you see these lines in-camera as well?

Just to be sure, I would reset the camera settings and format the card (or try a different one) to see if that helps.

Otherwise I'd speculate that the SR system might be dislodging the sensor.

What maximum ISO to use on K-70 default auto ISO range?

You appear to have found a setting that I have yet to discover. My camera (K-3 and K-70) is always able to fire the shot, however low the upper limit in Auto ISO.

OldChE - my K-70 is set at Auto ISO 100 to 6400 for grab shots. However, for considered shooting, I usually use manual ISO, setting it as low as feasible for the subject and scene.

Isn't K-1 crop mode a good place to allow flash with shutter speed faster than 1/200?

Yes, I am not sure of the physical limitations of the shutter mechanism, but I think in the past people have found some sort of wierd workarounds to demonstrate how much of a black band there would be at certain shutter speeds, so I don't think it should prevent it from happening. Also, Nikon and Canon allow it, so I wouldn't think it should be hard to do, but as you said, we don't know that for sure.

As far as the benefit to Pentax, I agree with you, this is a minor benefit. I'm just hoping that the effort to implement is low enough to get it done.

OK, I'm back on my bandwagon again of Pentax allowing us to trigger a flash at a shutter speed faster than the sync speed and deal with any resulting black bars.

Firstly, I know about High Speed Synch mode. I'm not talking about that. There are limitations to HSS that I am trying to get around. In case you are not aware, both Nikon and Canon will allow you to trigger a manual flash at a shutter speed faster than the camera's flash sync shutter speed. That is all I am asking for. Just a menu override choice to allow the camera to fire a flash, when say the shutter is at 1/250.

Wouldn't crop mode of the K-1 be a place where that would make sense? I'm guessing that any black bar from the shutter at 1/250th would be cropped out anyway, right? Actually, a cool thing would be to make the sync speed of the K-1 1/250 when in crop mode! But I'm not even asking for that, just a firmware update adding a choice in the menu to allow she shutter to fire. Does anyone know why this simple thing can't be done?

The user should have to override a menu setting in order for it to be allowed, so they should not bump into it accidentally. Nikon and Canon allow it, I don't see why Pentax can't.
