are you happy with switching to FF?

That was actually my point. I generally don't see lenses for APS-C being lighter than their FF counterparts (of course I compared only a few). So I don't understand the disadvantage of FF that the lenses are heavier and more expensive. Maybe the sensor in FF is not so forgiving, and exposes lens flaws more than APS-C, and FF users tend to look at higher quality lenses. But common sense tells me that when you print it at the same size, the impact of the lens flaw on the final product should be the same with APS-C and FF. But that's just a guess.

Pentax K-1ii VS Sony A7iii (Am I switching to the dark side?)

I also recently had a look at Sony's FF cameras and was quite impressed. I spent some time looking for reviews and oppinions, here's are two I found useful:

Of course, the reason why this guy included Sony in the big player league, and Pentax not, is his own opinion, and is valid for professionals.

Previously I never considered Sony as a choice, as I don't trust the brand (generally, not only for photo equipment). But I have to agree they made a smart move (as did Fuji a couple of years ago, imo), and they certainly had the muscle to do it. They might very well to be the leader in FF mirrorless, at least for some years. Looking back we can't dismiss the fact that they tried to innovate (I'm thinking of their SLT line), as did Fuji for that matter, and you we have to give them credit for that. They are trying hard. Time will tell if it will work out for them and reach a critical mass of professionals which will make the switch. Samsung tried hard as well in the mobile business, had a lot of failed projects, and look where they are now. I see no reason why Sony should not become the new Canon or Nikon. Dismissing them with arguments like "they are a consumer electronics company" or "they have no history in making lenses or cameras" seems silly. On the other hand they also made some bad decisions in the past which effectively canceled the potential of some technologies. Just look at their smartphone business, especially during the Sony Erricsson era, or the minidisc.

It would seem like the DSLRs don't have a bright future. They won't go away, for sure, but it will affect R&D and likely also the prices. I wanted to try out a rangefinder some time ago, but stay digital, and there was no option for me. Even second hand Leica's are way out my reach. It will be a sad day when this happens to DSLRs. Pentax has stated they will further invest in DSLR and that's great. For me, I just hope they will find a way to make K-1 (more) portable, or maybe an APS-C which is so close to FF that it doesn't matter anymore. I know, you can't beat physics, there will always be differences, but a super sensor with incredible dynamic range and/or low noise would leave FF with so few advantages that the decision might shift from APS-C vs FF to APS-C to medium format.

I shot only DSLRs until now, and I think I'll miss the OVF once I make the switch. It's the biggest concern for me right now. Probably the same way Rangefinder fans relate to DSLRs . That's of course not the case for the kids out there which grew with Smartphones and Digital point-and-shoot, and are perfectly comfortable with the EVF. Maybe that's one of the reasons for this big shift to mirrorless.

I went this Saturday to a Shop and had a look at Sony. Boy is it tempting. I never considered switching to Sony before, but I have to say I really liked the A7III. Especially since the body has a similar price to the K-1. I haven't made my research on the lenses yet, but at the first look it seems like there's no big difference in size & weight to the APS-C lenses, and I don't know why. Everybody is saying that going FF means the glass is heavier & more expensive. Maybe for telephoto, but I guess I can live with shooting in APS-C mode when I need big zooms.

And even if the lenses are heavier, having a 650g body means I could just take a ligher lens, compromise on quality a little bit, for those moments when I can't carry 1.5 - 2 kg around.

Anyway, I liked it so much that I was seriously thinking about the A7RIII as well. And I'm not a professional photographer. It's crazy if you ask me, Not once I thought about spending that much on a body. Maybe it's a Sony marketing trap.

Anyway, I am currently not convinced I will get used to the EVF, and unfortunately I can't tell unless I use one for some time. There's something magic about seeing the scene through a glass instead of some electronic sensor.

I have explored that option. Olympus seemed like an interesting option (I dismissed Panasonic because they are focused more on video, and the camera size is more or less like an APS-C DSLR). I was however shocked when I took one in my hand (I believe it was an OM-D M5 II): it was heavy and small, and because of that very uncomfortable to hold and my hand got tired pretty soon. The controls were also crammed, and difficult to use. It was so bad that I said to myself "what were they thinking? who would be comfortable with this?".

So you take your K-1 on your hiking trip and don't mind the weight or size? What lenses do you take with you?

Hi,

On FF vs APS-C one can find tons of articles and discussions on the internet, and possibly even in this forum. I'd like however to risk a little bit and open the topic here (again): If you have experience shooting APS-C, and at some point switched to FF, how did that work out for you? What made you decide, and are you happy with your decision?

I am obviously asking to help myself make this decision.

So, you mean you would choose K70 over K3II just for the ISO performance?

---------- Post added 08-02-17 at 04:21 PM ----------

I never really looked. I was generally thinking to buy a new camera and then use it as much as possible. I did a quick search and found a used K3 at 750 USD (body only), supposingly in a very good condition, with only 1600 shots taken (can you see that in the menu?). Choosing between K3 and K3II is really a pain. I would like the new stabilizer, but I'm afraid I'm going to miss the flash.

BTW, if you are reading this and frequently use the GPS from K3II I would love to hear your use case.

Yes, the KP is pretty tempting. :)

Hi,

New K5-II cameras are still available in shops, (at least in my country, strangely K3 is not :) ) and seems like a good option, given the lower price. Would you recommend getting one today? Should I pay attention to anything in particular when choosing a K5-II over K3-II (or KP). Out of all the differences I would consider the only poorer ISO performance and Stabilization being important, with the first more than the latter. I don't care much about more Megapixels (should I?). I like the compactness of the K5-2 over K3-2 (im mm and g the difference is small, but in the hand you feel a difference), as well as the built in Flash (I have no Idea at the moment how much I would miss the built-in Flash, I don't intend to use an external one, because the camera is for travels).

I appreciate any opinion on this matter, thanks.

Question about Pentax as a brand

What I mean by poorer autofocus is the fact that in 100D only the central focus point is cross-type. But I have to confess, I'm not very educated on this topic, so I don't really know how important this is. I just know I miss having more focus points on my current 500D (for real, not just as a feature junkie). My initial dissapointment was the fact that having 100D placed in the entry level area means that it is not guaranteed to cover all your needs in a reasonable time span in the future as you evolve as a photographer. I'm sure it's a great camera, and any skilled photographer can make little wonders with it, but there is a chance that you get to feel its limits, miss a shot or two. It's essentially the difference between "good" or "quite good" and "the best you can get".

That beeing said, I can't but recognize the value Canon (and others as well) is bringing by making such affordable cameras. If you could measure a ratio of features/price, I'm sure that the entry level cameras rule here. You get something like 50% - 70% capablilitiies of a top of the line camera (my own rough estimation) at 10%-20% of the price. It's the same as buying a used K500, because you will get more for your money, even though you will not get as much as with K300. This is even more dramatic in the phone industry, where essentially a couple of overpriced flagships are financing research and move the industry forward, while all mid-range or low-end phone buyers just enjoy the benefits at a low price (and later or with fewer features). So, evil marketing machine or not, Canon makes good cameras quite affordable, which can't be a bad thing (same with Nikon I guess). There is now even the concept of "affordable full frames". Quite impressive, if you ask me.

When you say "drawback is high ISO noise" you compare with what exactly? Pentax? I think Canon sensors are the same in all models, just that entry levels use older generations.

Dear Pentaxians,

Thank you very much for your replies. It is much more than I expected. I decided to make portability as my main requirement from a camera, and weather sealing as my second. And by portability I mean more size than weight. So in the Pentax land, the K70 would be my choice. However I decided to wait a little more, and see what Canon is doing. 100D was an experiment in size, maybe there is a successor planned, maybe even targeted at more experienced users. Reading your replies and looking up your references also made me decide on staying in DSLR land, and not venture into Mirrorrless kingdom. Fuji is really tempting, but it still failed to convice me that it's not going the apple way.
I just hope the three major players in DSLR are still fully committed to the cause and also recognize portability as a need for some users.

Cheers,
roti

Autofocus is poorer in 100D. But I agree there isn't much difference between 100D and other entry-level Canons. My complaint was with 100D beeing in the entry-level league, instead of the middle-class xxDs.
I don't know how gear obsessed canonians are, but to me this looks like a wild generalization. There's nothing wrong in being picky with your equipment. I purchased my Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC without too much study, and ended up regretting my decision a little bit, as the non VC version would have been better. I took great pictures with it, and am not using it because of the size/weight, not because it's not as sharp as the non VC version.

Yes, the non VC is apparently better. I was planning to sell mine and getting the non-VC one, before thinking about buying a new camera body. See here: Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD IF Lens Image Quality

Question about Pentax as a brand

Many thanks for your insights.

I shoot primarily during travels, so it would be landscapes, portraits and some street photography. I do plan to focus on potraits more in the near future.

I currently own a Canon 18-55 IS (the kit lens), Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 VC (bought to replace the kit lens, but I found myself not using it too much because of the size), Canon 50mm / f/1.8 and Canon 100mm f/2. I never shot any video, and it's not an important feature for me, but I may use it if the camera supports it. I mostly use the zoom lens, as I still feel slighly incomfortable with the prime lenses.

I don't have a particular budget, but I would try to keep my costs down, as photography is just a hobby. A 1000$ body would be good, but I'm also willing to go beyond if I find value in it.

@pathdoc, what exactly do you mean by "autofocus is Pentax' weak spot"?

I am a little bit skeptical about the shake reduction feature. It's a nice to have, but does it come with a compromise? Fuji does not have in body image stabilization because it is incompatible with the lens mount (there is no space for the sensor to shift without compromising image quality, see here: “Our highest priority is always image quality”. Interview with Takashi Ueno and Shusuke Kozaki from Fujifilm Japan. | FUJI LOVE). How does Pentax do it, especially since they are using an old lens mount design? Fuji made a brand new mount and decided not to have in body stabilization. Pentax may have forced it into the body to have a competitive advantage over Canikon. In addition to that, stabilisation will help only partially in poor light conditions.

@vodoc, I am somewhat surpised to hear that Pentax image quality is second to none. What makes it better? It is my impression that many top professional photographers choose Canikon, rather than Pentax. So I expect their image quality to be the best. Yes, lower end models are stripped down and there's a lot of marketing involved there, but the sensons are the same. At most they are one generation older and/or smaller in size.

What about the menu system and shooting modes? Canon has two: one for entry levels and one for mid-range and flagships, the latter one having the button layout and menu system more suited for advanced photographers. If you move from an xxxD to an xxD you essentially pay for weather sealing and menu system, which is more or less the same as the big full frames. Does Pentax have something similar?

Question about Pentax as a brand

Hi,

I am a canonian, thinking about switching brands.
I started with 350D back in 2007 then switched to the 500D. I mostly shoot during my travels, so I value the portability of my camera. I also almost never use the flash, so often I find myself needing more ISO (with 500D I try to stick to ISO 800 as much as possible, and in worst cases go to ISO 1600; it's maximum, ISO 3200, is a pain). I don't have many lenses, so I am considering a switch now.

I looked a lot at the new hot stuff in town: mirrorless. They are an intriguing proposition (with Fuji beeing on top of my list), but I am still not convinced of the portability they promise. Canon 500D + Tamron 17-50 (non VC) weighs almost 1000g. Fuji X-T10 with Fujinon 18-55 F2.8 weighs a little over 1000g. So where is the flange focal range advantage here? Sony's A7 seems to have the same "problem".

Besides that, I am used to an optical viewfinder. I like it, and I am a little bit afraid to switch an electronic one. I read a lot about them, and while it's true I haven't tried one extensively, I can't imagine them beeing better as the optical ones. So for the moment I am thinking to stick to DSLR.

It would seem there are only three companies to choose from, when it comes to DSLR: Canon, Nikon and Pentax. Sony is going mirrorless (and I don't like them anyway :)). I generally like my Canon, I guess many would reccomend not to switch. I haven't made up my mind yet, anyway, but I also did not shoot extensively with anything else or shared experience with somebody else.

What I miss in my current camera:
- high ISO
- weather sealing/high quality construction
- viewfinder who covers the entire picture

What I would like in my new camera:
- good construction and/or weather sealing
- more portability (less weight, smaller size)
- no articulated screen (I believe it shortens the life of the camera, as it will eventually break)

I was initially thrilled when I saw Canon releasing the 100D, but sadly they positioned it even lower than the current entry-level xxxDs, and clearly targeted at beginners. Yes, this camera is an excercise, maybe they come up with a new model that will be targeted at a different audience, but that hasn't happened yet. I also considered the 6D for a while, thinking to give up my portability requirement in favour of high ISO, but I'm not convinced yet that this is a good trade off for me. I also need to look closer at the lenses, as I may end up carrying way more than the 250g, which is the weight difference between 500D and 6D. Size is also becoming uncomfortable with 6D.

One thing I don't like about Canon is that they started to have too many products, and they have to leave out features from certain models, to prevent them from canibalizing on higher end ones. This is the case with 100D, 80D and 6D. Strangely, 80D, 7D Mk II and 6D are all similarly priced.

Apparently Nikon is generally better than Canon at high ISO, but that's only from several reviews I read.

Canon's are almost all manufactured in Japan, which I consider a good thing. This is not the case with Nikon.

So, one day I decided to have a look at Pentax, and this brings me here. I was surprised to see weather sealing and viewfinder with full coverange even in the entry levels (which are more expensive than Canon's because of that). I guess this is because Pentax does not have to worry so much about the entry levels cannibalizing on their flagship products. Or maybe they just want to offer something that the big guy's don't (at least not in the entry levels). Either way it's a good thing.

So, my questions to you are:
What Pentax would you reccomend for me?
What are your general views and oppinions on Pentax as a brand? What's keeping you with Pentax, and what annoys you?

Thanks for taking the time to read my post. Cheers,
Razvan
