Weekly Challenge Weekly challenge #407: Roots

Roots. My photo is a literal interpretation but "roots" can mean many things. I have also gone monochrome here, which is unusual for me but seemed to fit. (I looked at past challenges and this does not seem to have been done recently.)

Closing for the contest is midnight Saturday, 9 December (MST). (Site administrators please fix if I have got anything wrong!)

The fine print:
Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture (and only one picture) in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for at least 7 days, plus an additional day, if required, for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax/Ricoh (DSLR) camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

K10D. The Australian flora and fauna has been shaped by fire. In the Top End, fires rage during the Dry Season, then there is the Wet and everything is green and growing.

No comment on the DOF because I think it is personal preference for the appearance of the image. As for calculating DOF, I always have my phone and use an app, if I cannot judge from a test image.

Pentax video: is it really that lousy?

Fair comment. I don't do much video, and I have the luxury of having a Sony video camera (and a Bloggie), but the remark about "technique" is spot on.

Pentax! Always Pentax! I keep all my gear in tubs with desiccant, for the wet season humidity. Now I've got the K-1, I doubt I will buy another body for a long time. I've got too many lenses to list but they are all Pentax or Sigma. My best photos* were with a Pentax 18 - 135 or a Sigma 5- 500. (I write "were" because I have only recently got the K-1 and have not shot with it much. I have waterproof camera bags which have an extra pull over rain shield**. Incidentally, I bought my first Pentax in Panama, in the duty free zone (I don't know if they still have that). Last year I bought the Ricoh WG-4, which is waterproof, for when it is really wet. The quality of the images is not first rate, but if I'm in a rain storm, it doesn't really matter: everything is going to be grey and fuzzy.

* My best photos as judged by others, not me, in photography competitions.

** I got caught in a full on tropical, torrential, downpour once -- visibility reduced to less than 1 m and rain coming down harder than in a shower full on -- and I was worried about my camera but the LowenPro bag did not let a drop in.

I would not buy a Pentax for video. For video, I use Sony, who have been doing video for longer.

Exactly. It is nothing new; either in photography or anywhere else.

Okay, why do I buy Pentax? The very first 35 mm camera I bought was Pentax because it could go from full auto to full manual, and could be manual speed (auto aperture) or manual aperture (auto speed). Of the three lenses I bought with that camera, over 30 years ago, I can use all* with my K-1. Every Pentax (or compatible Sigma) lens I bought, I can put on my K-1. Or on any of my other Pentax cameras.

But I buy other brands. My favourite "walk around" camera is a Sony. My "tough conditions"* camera is a Ricoh.

* Alas, one of the three has succumbed to mould and it is not worth getting it fixed.

** I live in the tropics; we have a wet season; and in the wet season, monstrous storms can blow up in minutes. My recent Pentax cameras are weather sealed but they would not survive.

Sigh. The only "hype" is about the piece itself, which I have to say, is boring and predictable. So manufacturers and marketers boost their products?!?! Who knew?

In response to a comment, the author wrote this:

"Stephen, many are clueless about how things work on the Internet, especially when it comes to camera announcements. I decided to write this article after talking several people out of upgrading to the D850 (they surely did not need it). The hype is very strong and it pushes consumers to make wrong choices."

The author thinks he knows what other people need. He thinks other people "make wrong choices". He is described thus:

Nasim Mansurov is the author and founder of Photography Life. While he spent the majority of his adult life pursuing technology, he discovered photography as his true passion after the birth of his first child. Not happy with pictures from a point and shoot camera, Nasim decided to purchase a Nikon DSLR to preserve memories of his family and that’s what started his journey into the world of digital photography. Today, Nasim is recognized as one of the leading educators in photography, conducting workshops, producing educational videos and frequently writing content for Photography Life.

"Photography Life" is where this piece was published. It is not "vanity press" but close to it. I have been doing photography for a long time and have never heard of him or this site, which is odd since he is apparently "recognized as one of the leading educators in photography, conducting workshops, producing educational videos and frequently writing content for Photography Life". Especially since he is "frequently writing content for Photography Life", the site he founded.

Excellent reply from Adam. I have two laptops, both with the same CPU. One has a graphics card; the other doesn't. The one with the graphics card is much, much faster.

AF1 - Autofocus is performed when [AF] is pressed.

AF2 - Autofocus is performed when [AF] is pressed. Half press of [SHUTTER] is disabled.

Usually, half pressing [SHUTTER] focuses the lens; this option disables that.

Technical Questions about K-1 and Wifi

Yes, the K-1 already has the WiFi capability to transfer images without additional support (aside from apps for the device or PC). I don't do that because I find it easier to simply pop the card out and use a card reader plugged into my PC. I would not want to mess with 36 MP images on my device and I usually use RAW.

It is an interesting idea which I have never thought of doing. I think I will try. The light here is generally bright, so I could get good speeds for landscape shots.

"Best" Budget Lenses for Pentax
Posted By Keith23
Replies: 26

I would not rely on an article that says "If you have a Pentax kit or you are thinking about picking one up – maybe for that K-1 DSLR – then you are likely wondering about the best budget options for Pentax right now" at the start and then says "(not that Pentax makes a full frame at the time of writing this posting)". The following discussion is all about the APS-C. Not very good. And then there is this: "One of the tough things with the Sony system, especially on the full frame side of things is that native budget options have been slim pickins’. that said, there are still some great budget E mount options that you all should be considering. (As well we will include some great Sony A mount lenses that can be adapted and will work well)".

It seems to be a badly edited "copy and paste" of another article. And the lenses are mostly at the smaller focal ranges.

k5iis and user mode

They user modes are handy, once you get used to the camera. My K3iis has only 3 but I have one set for landscape (emphasis on depth of field), one for wildlife (emphasis on shutter speed); the third gets changed for different things. But, say, walking through a park, I can quickly switch from landscape to wildlife.
