Does the K1 Mark II still make sense to buy today? Is there an Mark III in the works?

Well! I have both a K3iii and a K1ii. They do different things. I use my K1 for interiors with a Venus shift lens or a Pentax 15 - 30mm. The articulating back is invaluable. The K3 with the new PLM lenses is a formidable sport or wildlife camera. But it lacks an articulated back so it’s a case of ‘get down dirty!’ The K3 is far more advanced technically otherwise. There’s no sign of a K1 upgrade any time soon. Splash out. Get both!!!

I have a K1 II and a K3 III. Both are fine cameras, but IMHO, they do different jobs well! K3 is lightweight. K1 can be a tripod camera - particularly with some heavyweight FF lenses. Biggest downside of the K3 is the absence of the K1’s superb tilt screen. Although it does have touch screen. So. I use K3 for reportage and K1 for formal shots, architecture and interiors - particularly with the Laowa (Venus) 14mm manual shift lens. Pentax 15-30mm lens is a heavy beast but a good combo as well.
K1II was an upgrade on the K1 I, but I don’t use many of the additional features, so was it worth the spend?

K3, K3ii, or K3iii for Second Body

I would go for the K3iii. I use my K1ii for architecture and interiors and the articulated screen is invaluable but it is much heavier. If the K3iii had the same rear screen it would be the equal of the K1! In every other respect the images I get from my K3iii are superb - and much better than my old K3 that I traded in. Either way, the new camera will be worth it and surely is tax allowable for the business.

Six different versions of the Pentax K-3 Mark III

I use my K3iii regularly for interiors shoots where my K1 with its huge 15-30mm lens will not fit in tight corners. The K3 is missing the one thing that would make it near perfect in this situation with its much smaller lens options - an articulating screen! Many of my shots are taken either high-up or low down with my back literally against the wall. As a result, I often miss the 'perfect' shot for the want of being able to see what is happening on the screen. With every position requiring a tripod and a 12 second delay to give me time to get out of the room, that means quite a lot of wasted time! Come on, Pentax. The K3 iii is nearly there, almost a great camera - but missing one obvious essential.

What Lens Do You Use the Most?

...That it's down to what you do and which body you are putting it on!
On my K1 Mkii I'm primarily taking pro interior shots and for this I use the HD Pentax-DFA 15-30mm. (It lives around its sweet spot - f8 to f11. I've never opened it up to f2.8 !!) If I have to use my K3 Mk iii, my Sigma 10-20 gets me into tighter corners than the Pentax 15-30
On my K70, and my K3 Mkiii it's mainly a DA 18-135mm as it's soo versatile. I do a lot out and about with vintage cars and I get lovely, crisp results although I've heard people moan about this lens. (Mine is fine).
Other lenses are available and an old Tamron 18-250 occasionally comes out when I'm on holiday and don't want the hassle of changing lenses all the time.
I've got a bag full of glass dating from the lovely old 50mm f1.7 from Pentax LX days in the 70's (Yes I still have it) up to my sigma 50 - 600mm (for motor racing) with all sorts of variants in between.
The Laowa 15mm full-frame shift lens is probably my next purchase for architectural and interiors work...

And all they needed to do was fit an articulated back! Apart from that, my K3 iii works fine. Why do I need a black one?

I have both a K1 -ii and a K3. I only use my (heavy) K1 when I’m out working with a tripod and all my gear. The K1 is brilliant! However, mobile photography and the need for lighter weight kit and lenses in a backpack brings the K3 into its own. Also consider the increased depth of field that the smaller sensor brings. Useful in many circumstances. So for me, I need both and know clearly which camera I will use before I set out. I wouldn’t want to carry a full-frame camera around all day on the chance that I might get a shot or two worth keeping! The K3 sensor is well up to most demands for sharpness and decent sized enlargements for most purposes IMHO.

I don’t care about red or blue bodies. I’m not interested in premium editions. I just want the K1 - style articulating screen. 95% of the development work has been done!

What is the lens that lives on your camera?

My K1. Mk2 lives in a case with a selection of lenses. Mostly, the Pentax 15-30 is in use as I shoot interiors.
My K3 spends most of its time with the Pentax 18-135 fitted.
If I get out to a motorsport event, I have a Sigma ‘Bigma’ that I use.

You just have to bite the bullet and get a K-1 and keep it for yourself. You can pass the K-5 on to the the wife and kids to use. Life is short!!!
