And Sorry Mike! I'm very sorry about that my wrong information! These both are Pentax K-1M2 samples! The left at 800 ISO (pushed two stops in Lightroom) while the right at 3200. My bad. |

However I think OP there (rick colman) made partly incorrect conclusions about "ISOless performance, where there is not penalty for boosting shadows, etc." ...I think it's just because of the newer more sophisticated image processing (NR) , and everything we've been talking about in this thread.

Yep. But actually I think that you can create that same "2 EV of IQ improvement" illusion with decent NR in post....
BTW, you're right about Sony's star eater the phenomenon, except that RAW artifacts (...that affect very bright star trails and create a halo of blocky compression artifacts), is gone with newer Sony cameras (A7II, A7RII, A9, A7RIII, A7III etc.).

True, but there are less cooked and more cooked RAW formats. The less cooked, the better. I use jpg format if I want pre-chewed stuff!

Wow Kunzite, I thought that you had done with this case (as you wrote earlier)... But I see that it still bothers you ? ;-) ---------- Post added 04-24-18 at 11:28 AM ----------
This new Pentax K-1M2 processing can also eat stars. It remains to be seen, we also need proper K-1 vs. K-1M2 star-sky comparison. (with different ISO and exposure times)... Indeed this new processing can clean up star-sky noise and also eat some dim stars at the same time!

Yes, it's for jpg files. RAW should be just RAW, not cooked stuff.

That in-camera algorithm seems apply NR, but also a bit sharpening - when ISO800 or higher. ...Anyway, I would like desperately to see the corresponding K-1 vs. K-1M2 comparison!

Indeed. It's an annoying trend. I understand that if inexpensive APS-C amateur camera (<1000$), but not with flagship models.

I think that's because new (K-1M2) in-camera processing applies some extent sharpening (> ISO400)

I can see some amount more details in ISO100 sample...(sorry bad quality, but still - you should see clear differences..)

Yep, that comparison will solve this matter. And hopefully we will also get PEF (Adobe) support by then.

;-) Ok, YOU thought so. I never claimed they were my files. These are OP's (MJKoski / maffer) files. ...And I know a lot about matter, because we've been discussing a lot of this there i finnish photography site (digicamera.net)...

Yes, but now Pentax using it (actually it also happens with Pentax KP), and that is the reason for this debate/thread...

Yep, but "the problem" still is that we don't know how well original K-1 handle same situations if you compare to K-1M2...They have exactly same sensor inside. Only in-camera image processing differs. But is it just a good thing? That was the question from the beginning of this thread...

I don't know if DCU makes any differences here, but OP tried Lightroom and Rawtherapee for these DNG files, and other member of that finnish camera forum (digicamera.net) tried Silkypix 8 (DCU is silkypix powered, btw) and got same kind of NR smearing when ISO800 or higher used... I hope that PEF files would bring some improvement in this regard, but I don't dare to hope too much.
