Best travel lens

In 2007, I bought a Pentax K-10d and a 21mm f/3.2 Limited lens. Took it with me to Paris (see Original Refrigerator Art).

Went back in 2009 and 2011, with this same lens on Pentax K-20d, then K-5. (see Here Now, Gone Before Long)

The Trump pandemic halted my travels abroad, but I still use that 21mm lens on K-3, K-1, and K-70, although I have added most of the other Pentax limited primes.

Were I to travel tomorrow, I would probably take the K-70 (love that articulated LCD and built-in flash) and the trusty 21mm lens.

Guess I'm not part of this party.

I have progressed through (and still have) the K10d, K20d, K-5, K-3, K-1, and K-70, along with the 15, 21, 35, 40, and 70 compact prime lenses. Great results and enjoyment from them all.
While the full-frame K-1 delivers, I often carry the K-70 because of its smaller size, full-articulated LCD screen, and built-in flash. FWIW, my go-to lens has always been the 21mm.

Oh, and I don't do video or zoom lenses (I'm 76 years old and been in photography since I was a teen.)

New K-series DSLR under development to be exhibited

My original post on this forum topic (the coming new K-3 something) was simply to offer my personal perspective on the matter. Then a 'moderator' disallowed the link I'd included to give readers an idea of where I 'come from' because I might be just promoting my site—which is silly because I only get about 20 visitors a month at most, and I don't 'monetize' what I do in any way.

Then readers chime in to tell me why 'I am wrong'. Not to worry—I am not about to change what I've learned from over 60 years of immersion in photography.

I am happy where I am.

Yerz,

My first digital Pentax was the K10d in 2007. Since then I have purchased the K20d, K5, K3, K1, and the K70. No regrets, and I have made many fine images with these cameras. (Still have them all; can't part with such old friends.)

To my thinking, Ricoh/Pentax did best with the K70: fully articulated LCD, built-in flash, 24 Mpixel APS-C sensor, all in a very compact size—and reasonable price. From what I see, this proposed new model offers little new and, more importantly, loses features that are worthwhile to me (articulated finder, built-in flash). [note that I do not do video, sports, children, "birding" etc. so what I say may have no bearing on you.]

Cheers…

A Standing Ovation for the K-1 Firmware Update 1.3

To "pathdoc": On of my attractions to the K-1's full-frame is the ability to maximize the APS-C limited lenses I have (15m 21m, 35m, 70m); to take them to the limits of coverage. The 1:1 crop then extends these limits. Wow!
Think about all the Eugene Atget photographs that would be lost if you drew the line of acceptability at vignette!

I am reminded of the Bill Brandt quotation: "I am not interested in rules or conventions. Photography is not a sport."

And to "Pioneer": Well, having lived with everything from 8x10 on down, and avoided both muffins and progeny, I can say that I am very happy with what is. Your life is what is yours, and not mine.

A Standing Ovation for the K-1 Firmware Update 1.3

First frame after installing the firmware upgrade in my Pentax K-1 that adds the option of a 1:1 crop.

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/attachments/190-pentax-k-1-k-1-ii/327312d1475260122-standing-ovation-k-1-firmware-update-1-3-first_square.jpg

According to Adobe Camera Raw file properties, file size is 42.83 MB, dimensions 4912x4912, bit depth 16.
Handheld 1/15 sec. at f/8 with 15mm lens (which was designed for the APS-C format).

[File size reduced to 144 ppi and from 16- to 8-bit and converted to JPEG for convenient attachment here.]

I expect that this is about close as I am going to get to a 'full-frame' digital Hasselblad. The sensor area is 24x24mm
on the Pentax in the 1:1 crop, as compared to 56x56 on the film version of the Hasselblad. Smaller, but larger than the 13x13mm
of the micro four-thirds cameras.

The 15mm lens yields a diagonal angle of view almost five degrees wider than the Biogon on the Super Wide C. The Pentax DA 21mm
is one degree wider than the 50mm Distagon, and the Pentax 35mm Macro is one degree narrower than the 80mm Planar.

Bestest of all: Ricoh/Pentax just gave this update to us without charge or fanfare.
