Did you prefer your old camera?

As some people know about my gear, I have Leica-R lenses with Leitax mount for my Pentax K-1 (II). Recently, I bought a Panasonic DC-S1 camera. I Iove both worlds for diffèrent reasons. Anyway, I have a lot of pleasure to get out with my Pentax K-1 since I think it is the best DSLR camera in the world to offer best compromise between resolution, IBIS and Raw process and the pleasure of OVF...

Hello everybody,
PDCU5 is the worst software I ever used. Besides, it is unstable on MacOS... :o
Nevertheless, RawTherapee is wonderful especially for my Pentax K-1 (II) when Pixel Shift is useful. I bought a Panasonic DC-S1 in August 2021 to use my Leica-R lenses not Leitaxed (but also Pentax Leitaxed ones). I can use both cameras in different ways but with the same pleasure: shooting. Even if I prefer the catch in hand of the Pentax camera and the OVF...
Many thanks for RawTherapee developers and The Squirrel Mafia!

Yes, these profiles are available under LRCC > 6.3 if I do remember well... But you need the DNG base Pack to use emulations (different camera renderings & rolls rendering)... ;)

Cobalt Image filters

Hello everyone,
I open this thread, still non-existent on Pentaxforums.com, about the Cobalt Image site. These are color filters, which allow you to switch from one device to another, while having the same rendering on the screen. This colorimetric rendering would come as close as possible to reality, allowing a better tonal gradient, while eliminating the over-saturation artefacts used by the various brands of digital cameras. In other words, we would have a better calibration. Different filters are available as needed.
Many of those I have read are very happy with the results.

There are different types of pack:
- the DNG base pack which allows you to work on Photoshop, Lightroom, Luminar, DxO PhotoLab, RawTherapee (but also Capture One) and which offers Standard, Neutral, Flat, Repro filters. This pack is required to use the following packs. So you can have different base packs, as many as you have cameras, but a single pack of one of the following options is enough to use all the combinations according to the different cameras you have.
- emulation packs for boxes different from yours
- Emulation Film Packs of the brands Fuji, Kodachrome diapo, Kodak Films negatives.

There is a 15% discount code until the end of August 2021: justforFM

Any experience is welcome.

PS: I find it very interesting to be able to take advantage of an extended calibration on the one hand, then to switch from one camera to another (Pentax K-1 & Panasonic DC-S1) without worrying about the original color differences thanks to these filters ... thank you to LudisR by the way for insisting and for having convinced me of the merits of these filters ...

Hello Photoaki,
the more convenient lens in this range is the Leica Elmarit-R 180/2.8 ver.II less heavy and very good as well in spite of CA.

Hi The Squirrel Mafia,
thank you for your help about RawTherapee. Very useful.
PDCU5 is unbearable and unstable! What about SILKYPIX Developer Studio Pro 10? Doesn't it use the same "derawtizer" processing? :o
Best regards.

Hello The Squirrel Mafia,
I have lost my .dcp profile for my Pentax K-1. I upgraded my own Pentax K-1 to K-1 II but i was unable to use my K-1 II .dcp profile in LR CC for my K-1 (for files before upgrading the camera). What a scheme!
But possible in DxO and RT. So, in DxO PL4 for example, I export my files in Tiff mode (using .dcp Pentax K-1 II profile for K-1 DNG files) but with Adobe RVB profile to use with LR CC: works perfectly like that... The Profile for Pentax K-1 mk II works perfectly for K-1 mkI... ;)
I hope it is useful.

Edit: more convenient, just use dcpTool...

Hello The Squirrel Mafia,
thank you so much for your kindness. I do not use the PDCU5, it doesn't work so well on my computer (unstable with MacOSX) but that's good news for RT users. I work sometimes with Silkypix and I dare to understand that's a similar product to PDCU5 about rendition.
About DxO PhotoLab, that's a pretty good idea to compare noise reduction between the two softwares.
Thank you again.

I hope so for KAF4 lenses' owners.

I wish Pentax staff the success they deserve.

About CA on HD Pentax-D FA ★ 85 mm f / 1.4 SDM AW, at contre-jour, the issue is not, in real life. You can see some CA on samples, that's right but at 100% crop. That's not significant according to extremely challenging and difficult conditions. It does not affect the perfect rendition of this lens IMHO. It reminds me the Walter Mandler 3D effect you can find on Leica Summicron-R 90/2 (pre-AA) or Leica Elmarit-R 180/2.8 ver.II (pre-Apo) where bokeh is magical.
I have KAF Sigma ART 35/1.4 lens. Nobody talks about extreme distorsion at low distance with this lens which looks more fisheye than a wide-angle lens. And nobody talks about the distorsion control at all distances of the new Pentax HD D-FA SDM AW 50/1.4 and 85/1.4. IMHO, it is more important to notice than a little of CA in huge conditions... :)

---------- Post added 24-06-20 at 23:47 ----------

Again, I didn't predict the demise of Pentax but of a system. It happened to Leica for the R-mount for the benefit of S-system and L-MILC system.

You misunderstand me. I never said anything like that. I am just saying to your early point, I am not sure you have a DSLR camera to use with KAF4 lenses in "20 years time" as I read somewhere else. Just because of compatibility.
So the rest of your reasoning is off-topic.

A DSLR camera to my eyes is a piece of work compared to a MILC, because of mechanical true precision. One day, this mechanical precision will be costlier to produce... probably to be discontinued. That's my theory, I hope I am wrong.

Unfortunately, the market alone holds sway. Are you an absolute Pentax fan? I am not, if Pentax doesn't suit my needs, I quit, just like that. That's nothing to do with mirrorless cameras or without. Just a matter of needs. I am not convinced at all by MILCs superiority, today. But what about the next five years? Fortunately, the Pentax K-1 is the best camera for my needs, at the moment.

I pray for you to be right!

You are right, I am not a "real" Pentax user, just a real photography "amateur". But thanks to Pentax, I can use my Leica-R lenses and I would say it sounds like "Pentax made the K-1 for my personal concern and needs"... Thank you Pentax.
I am a hybrid/bastard photographer but I am very happy like this in my lonely world... I am the fruit of a dilemma: how to use my beloved lenses with a very good OVF FF DSLR camera? Just by "Leitaxing" my lenses. Not the easy way but the only one and the best one according to my needs...;)

Yes, according to the economic events and DSLR market, what about it in next 5 years? If a Pentax Mirrorless camera doesn't emerge, what about a KAF4-"X" MLC mount in near future to use with KAF4 lenses?

That's true for your camera, but not safe for the Pentax KAF4 lenses. Who can tell you'll be able to use a KAF4 (electronic DLSR) lens in future on MLC if Pentax (DLSR) FF camera are abandoned? Will there be any adapter?
As I told you, I do not worry about myself as I use mechanical apertures lenses which can be suitable with any future MLC, no more no less. So, what's the near future for electronic apertures DSLR lenses, especially for Pentax? It is a question worth asking. :)

If KAF4 still exists. That's why I do not feel concern with mechanical apertures (by ring): you can fit these vintage lenses with any brand new EFV camera, not worried about that.:)

If the formulae are comparable, yes. Otherwise, it's not.
Probably comparable formulae between new D-FA AW SDM 50/1.4 and 85/1.4 (even if 85 is very unique according to his dual-concave front element)...;)

Zygonyx is a provocator! Beautiful process with this lens at Versailles? A king palace for this king of bokeh? A 85 focal length is not only for Portrait pictures. ;)

For example, Jeanloup Sieff made his reputation thanks to Wide-angle lenses for portraits. When I used to go to where he lives in Paris XVII°, I could notice every part of his flat where he made some of hese most famous 24x36 B&W nude portraits.... I miss him. :(

You should have reported my exact terms in stead of being a lot murkier: " I previously wrote that according to its formula (front bi-concave lens), this new Pentax lens should be compared to Zeiss Otus 85/1.4. And as I said, I am sure this lens is a must-have for the one who needs it..." It would have been a much more respectful behavior.
I am not a Pentax fan in terms of blindness. I own vintage Leica-R lenses when I discovered their supremacy in terms of micro and macro-contrast in past century. At that time, I tried Minolta, Nikon and Canon lenses (not Pentax I didn't know at that time). I loved working with Nikon cameras and some of their lenses are very good. I didn't like Canon lenses mainly because of CA. At that time (I tried Leica Summicron-R 50/2, Leica Summilux 80/1.4, Leica Apo-Summicron-R 180/2), I felt obvious to switch to Leica lenses (I used to mainly work on B&W Tri-X rolls and Kodachrome 25 and Fuji Velvia 50 slides).
Leica as everyone knows unfortunately abandoned Leica-R mount when switching to digital era for the benefit of Leica-S mount. I had Canon EOS 5D Mkx for convenience: I didn't want to change the original mount for a Leitax one although I always found their weak sensor as a stumbling block.
Then, Pentax K-1 has been released in 2016. I found the design of another era, old fashioned... Until I tried one with the Pentax HD PENTAX-D FA 24-70mm f/2.8 ED SDM WR. I didn't like the lens (excellent but not my taste) but I understood the potential of the camera thanks to the RAW files I worked on and the feelings I had with the camera: a joy to hold it in my hand. Changing original mount is not so easy nor psychologicaly obvious, but I did with some of my Leica-R lenses. I couldn't be happier.
Perhaps I change one day for another brand EVF camera, but the Pentax K-1 is still the one...
To resume, Pentax undeniably made an excellent lens with the new HD PENTAX-D FA★85mmF1.4ED SDM AW, but the limited edition is still an excellent option for those who like (like me) mechanical aperture, small lenses... ;)

---------- Post added 20-06-20 at 00:25 ----------

If I had no Leica-R lenses today, as a neophyte, I probably would go for two Pentax K-1, one with HD PENTAX-D FA 15-30mm f/2,8 ED SDM WR and one with HD PENTAX-D FA★85mmF1.4ED SDM AW according to my use... ;)

You are right, but I actually do not worry about the Leica. At minimum distance (70cm for focal length of 90mm), the bokeh is not so nice, but very good after 1 meter. And Leica AA90's minimum aperture is f:2.0 in stead of f:1.4 for the Pentax... A better point for the HD D-FA 85/1.4.

Of course, you are perfectly right.

Right again. It just means a new release doesn't disqualify the other ones..

But I didn't say the Leica AA90 was better in terms of quality but in terms of compacity, versatility, manual focus ring feelings, light weight. That's why I posted a photo of my combi (K-1/AA90) for forumers to compare with a K-1/HD D-FA 85/1.4. I previously wrote that according to its formula (front bi-concave lens), this new Pentax lens should be compared to Zeiss Otus 85/1.4. And as I said, I am sure this lens is a must-have for the one who needs it...

So to resume, different points can be noticed:
- I already have the AA90 which is an excellent lens (about sharpness, macro and micro contrasts), so It doesn't worth to my eyes buying the last Pentax iteration despite stratospheric performances. As you say, it's my concern, but it tells also you can make photo with vintage lenses which are very good.
- Besides, the Pentax lens is too specific for me: too huge, too heavy, not to carry around the world unless it's your unique lens or you have porters and yaks.
- I love manual focus, and until now no new era lenses have a nice satisfying manual focus ring to work with, unless...
- at last, Pentax offers for my concern and my use, the best FF OVF DSLR camera as of today. With my Leica-R lenses (but for any good lens), I couldn't have been happier with the Pentax K-1 (II) since 2016. Four years is a fairly long time for a FF digital camera...;)

- Twenty years of using a lens is not so bad (some of my lenses are more than 30 years old). What about the new release in that lapse time? Will SDM autofocus still be operational/guaranteed in 20 years time? Waiting for real reviews..
