Do I really need a KP? UPDATE

That's valid. I know enough to check it out at 8.3x (100%) to see if there's too much noise already. I've got the lenses for it, and the main birds I try to get around here are not terribly skittish unless it's a busy time of day around here. I know it's not a 10-minute proposition to try to capture a cardinal or even Carolina Wren unless you have an out-of-the-way spot and they're normally foraging or feeding there.

Thanks!

Yeah, I only meant the 12,800 ISO were ok if nothing else could be done because either the light wasn't there (despite the lens) or something else.

Great shots on the Honeyeaters!

I've gotten some decent shots on my 55-300 mm lens (older, not PLM) in good light too. Nothing wrong with it when there's plenty light (you're right).

Yeah, that was my feeling after I re-read one review and then read a bunch more, as I didn't see the huge step-up from the KP to justify more $$$. I do appreciate the really good summary of the high points, as that reply (and the others) will help more like me decide far easier about getting a KP vs the K-3 mk III. :D

Mike:

That's another great user summary why the KP is better all-around. I really appreciate your time in contributing to this thread with that extra information. :D

Thanks for your input! You and another poster sold me on a KP. After seeing your shots and the other poster's (plus the forum review on it), the KP was equivalent to the K-1 in IQ in many cases and so I can't see the K-3 Mk III would be such a huge improvement as to justify double the price (assuming $1500-1600 as some have speculated) for 4K video and more focus points.

It will be a little more of a learning curve on the buttons/redesign...but mine's on it's way from B&H and should be here the 24th.

Many thanks! Hope you don't mind me picking your brain sometime to get help.

I'm seeing some get really good results up to 12,800 ISO (multiple posts) from B&H/Adorama reviews.

Wow! Love the Milky Way shot! Couldn't tell there was any noise or grain out of the camera! Did you use any other in-camera settings for that shot?

That bridge night shot was stellar too: couldn't see any noise or grain @ 6400 ISO either. The bug shot at 3200 (macro) was crisp too. I sometimes will do some macro like that.

Thanks for sharing!

What the K-3 mark III would have is 121 focus points (SAFOX 13 vs the KP's SAFOX 11) and 27-cross-type focus points and really aside from a slightly higher ISO range and 4K video, don't know how much better than a KP it would be, since the effective MP is very close to the same (24 KP vs 25 k-3 Mk III).

I sometimes like to get some birding photography, but would also like some low-light (basketball inside, soccer outside). I don't need the tilt screen, but I would like it. My main question would be low-light and image quality, which seem to be excellent from reviews I'm reading on the KP. Can you say what you ISO you've used up to in the field and it still had low noise and good IQ?

When I read that about how good the KP is in low light, do you think it's worth waiting for the K-3 Mark III? It will have many more focus points, but doesn't seem to have the burst shooting speed the KP already does. If you had a choice between the KP now and waiting for the K-3 Mark III, which would you take?

I've read from some Adorama reviews on the camera that users there tend to get good, usable photos from 12,800-25,600 ISO (little noise). Is that true for any of you guys? I've only got a k-3 mark 1 and I'm lucky to get a usable shot in lower light past 800 ISO, with 1600 and 3200 being pretty much a wash.

I'm posting, doing the research I can (and hoping for a quick reply) as Adorama has a free overnight shipping on this today (21-dec), because if it's not worth waiting for the K-3 mark III and this KP is really about as good in low light as that K-3 Mark III would be, then I would pull the trigger on this and save the money for another really nice lens. Seems like this KP would already give me a great shot at some sports photography with the D FA 70-210 f4 lens I just got (the k-3 can't really take advantage of it in low light...not enough usable ISO there).

Wow. Great captures to be sure.

Anyone know/think the K-1 mk II will be even lower-priced before Thanksgiving than the current $1796? I would hope so, but I haven't priced this model before for that time. I know usually the lenses end up quite a bit cheaper if one waits then.

What are your thoughts on the DA 200mm for about $200 off and the DA 300mm Pentax for $100 off? Do you think B&H will/could go lower on either or that Adorama will go lower on either?

Does B&H or Adorama ever match Amazon prices on Pentax gear?

When I ordered my K-3 from B&H, I asked if they would honor the same shipping offer Adorama had. Since Adorama only had the K-3 Mk II for free overnight shipping at the time, the B&H salesperson said they would only honor price and shipping option for the exact same item. So I know B&H likely will, even to the same shipping option if the above is true. When I've ordered stuff from Adorama, I feel good they would honor a price match from a competitor had I asked them, so I'd ask, since they'll get the business if they do honor it and in that case it's in their best interest (getting the business and $$) to do so.

I'd like to snag this lens on sale, as I previously got the 100mm 2.8 from Adorama for $200 off the current price last year. Is there any particular time anyone knows of that could recommend I could look around and see this for maybe $200 off? I want to buy it new and right now price is $997 new. I get adorama emails for sales, but there never seems to be a particular set time they really put deals on their Pentax lenses. Any ideas or input?

thanks for the reply, yucatan--I indeed got a brand-new K-3 although I have yet to put it through its paces--but very much looking forward to it. :) I appreciate the information.

I'm convinced you're right NS_Sailor, as Ricoh has a track record going back to 2000 on its cd/dvd media of outsourcing that to Taiwan and most recently, China. Although it may not seem related, the RICOHJPN media used to be some of the cheapest media to buy and yet some of the best to burn provided someone had the right cd/dvd burner (like a Pioneer)...but once they switched their production almost exclusively to China, a LOT of shortcuts were taken to the point it's become junk media or at best barely average. To have that philosophy on hand means the company's willing to take shortcuts elsewhere so it's definitely a quality-control problem, as I can pick up a Canon prosumer model I barely use compared to my Pentax and it always works without problems. In contrast, I used my K-50 regularly for me to where I was averaging 3-4 pictures a day, so if 'infrequent use' were the culprit, I eliminated that. It's clearly and obviously defective manufacturing/lack of proper quality control, as my K-200 never had that trouble and I put 4x the actuations on it without nary a trouble. The K-50 model was obviously flawed and either someone got a good one or got a lemon.

Super pissed to find out I have a K-50 with a problem. Love the camera but hate that I'll have to replace this because just 2 days ago I had good light trying to take a selfie for kicks and could not 'fool' the camera to snap out of the serious underexposure. Out of warranty, too. Had a K-200D that was going along just fine and gave it to a friend, now this happens. grrrrrr

My shutter count was only something like 1,023 with manuf date of 23-9-2013. Bought July 2014 so even with slightly extended warranty, it went out in July and I didn't know this was a problem until a few days ago although I first noticed a very random problem in April but thought nothing of it--thought I just committed user error but now I see why. :(

---------- Post added 10-06-16 at 12:03 AM ----------

As you can see from my shutter count, I don't take tons of pics, but if it's feasible to stay with Pentax, I'd consider it. I use a 50 mm prime, 55-300mm Pentax, the 18-55mm kit lens and in March bought the WR 100mm prime. I'm looking at B&H (plan to check Adorama too) and see a K-3, K-S2 and k-70. I'd like someone to chime in that knows which one of these cameras is known for quality build and not crapping out like this K-50--especially since it's taken me THIS long to find out my K-50 is bad.

Also, I do some low-light photography (try to) like in museums where they don't like using flash, inside for a more natural light, some landscape and flower photography with limited people photography (like in church when they're not watching me and I can get a natural interaction). I'm almost imagining someone will say get the K-3 because of the anti-aliasing filter since it would only be $50 more than the K-70 and have a better image processor (I assume from looking), plus be slightly better than the K-S2 for the same reason. But please...anyone informed let me know so I don't make another useless purchase.
