How do Pentax lenses for a K-70 compare with those of other companies?

This is the first chance I've had to get back to the thread. Thank you all for your input. I appreciate it. Meanwhile I've visited lots of camera comparison sites and found one that I really like - cameradecision.com. I did a one-on-one comparison of the K-70 which I have and the Sony Alpha 7 III. Here's the result:

Sony A7 III vs Pentax K-70 Detailed Comparison

I have no idea what you professionals think of this link and of the validity of the comparisons but I thought it was a pretty handy site. Down near the bottom under "Our Decision" the K-70's imaging score was 62 vs the Sony's 81. I know, I know. The Sony is much more expensive and I suppose the comparison isn't fair but it leaves me with serious doubt about the K-70.

I told my photography teacher that I would send him samples of photos taken with all three lenses (excluding the macro) under ideal conditions - highest practical shutter speed, on a tripod using a remote shutter release - so he can see where I'm going wrong. I won't have a chance to do that tomorrow but hopefully Sunday, then I'll post some here. I don't know how to include the data you want to see. So stay tuned.

Hi, I'm pretty happy with my K-70 but I have trouble getting really tack sharp focus. I'm wondering what the reputation of Pentax lenses is as compared with other companies' lenses that fit the K-70. Or would I have better results if I stepped up to another Pentax model and used my Pentax lenses. I have the 55-300, 18-135, the 40 prime and the 100 macro. Thanks.

Is it my imagination that photo files loose sharpness going from camera to computer?

Hi, I recently wrote to ask what settings should be used with back-button focusing on my K-70. I am trying to improve focusing/sharpness and I'm not sure but I think I improved sharpness by recently taking my camera off of back-button focusing. Maybe it is my imagination. Also, when I look at my photos on the camera screen they look very sharp but after I load them on to my MacBook Pro (using High Sierra 10.13.6) they seem to lose sharpness. I use Adobe Bridge CC 2017 to initially look at my photos and Adobe Photo Shop Elements 14 for editing. I had always shot in JPEG but have recently switched to RAW.

So is it possible that I am losing sharpness when loading them onto the computer or editing? If this is the case is there any better software to use for initially looking at photo files? Are there any settings I'm missing on the camera that could help with this?

Thank you.

Hi, I have my K-70 set for back-button focusing but I'm probably not using it correctly or to its best advantage. Would some kind soul please tell me whether I should be using A.F.A, A.F.S or A.F.C. for viewfinder and which setting I should use for live view and any other settings I should be using. Thank you. I need to confirm this is the right hood for a Pentax 40mm Prime Limited.

Hi, I retraced my steps on the walk where I lost the lens hood to my 40mm prime limited lens and miraculously found it! I can see how I might have lost it and would like to warn others who may have this lens. The lens cap screws on in the same direction that the lens hood screws on, so unless you have your thumb on the lens hood, it would be very easy to at least partially unscrew the hood as you are unscrewing the lens cap. That is apparently what happened. A fellow forum member has sent me a used hood and cap (I'll be receiving it today). Given my history with this lens, I will be very glad to have a spare. I would like to post this warning on whatever forums have to do with this particular lens. Do you have any suggestions on where I might post it? I am going to post it on the Amazon page for this lens and wrote to Ricoh. Thank you all for your replies to my original post.

Hi, I've just come in from a walk with my camera and was dismayed to find that I have lost the lens hood for my Pentax 40mm Prime Ltd. lens. I had the lens cap attached to my wrist so I still have that but it does not fit the lens without its hood. I want to confirm that this is the right replacement before I spend $60!

Or

Would this lens cap fit the lens without its hood?

Need help with a new 40mm prime limited lens

Hi, I took my brand new 40mm prime limited lens out for a shoot today. While using the viewfinder, all was fine. When I switched to live view things were totally screwy. I have the camera set up for back button focusing. When I hit the back button the focusing ring moves, then the shutter clicks twice, the picture is taken and then the focusing ring moves again. The pictures seem to be in focus but should all of that be happening? I would think it would be really hard on batteries. Should I take the camera off of back button focusing when I'm using the prime? Perhaps I'm not using the right setting for autofocus with live view. Which setting should I be using? Which setting should I use for AF active area? Anything else I could be doing wrong?

One other thing was going screwy. I use Adobe Bridge to review my photos. I had taken a few shots today with my 100mm macro but after I moved some of the photos taken with the 40mm lens, metadata showed information for both lenses. What on earth is going on with that?

Thanks. Joyce Keay

Giving up on repairing K-70. Thinking of going to K-1 but not the K-1 Mark II

Hi, Before I made the decision not to have the camera repaired, I contacted Smart Guard, the protection plan provider, to find out what the procedure was for filing a claim. Then after I decided not to have it repaired, I sent them another e-mail saying as much. I received an e-mail from them today asking if I would like them to file a claim. So I sent her a copy of Advance Camera's email to me telling me what damage the camera had (automatic focus motor jammed and LCD hinge sheared off) and told them if they could successfully file a claim for those two things that are definitely damaged, that would be better than nothing and thanked her profusely.
I also told the woman from Smart Guard that part of my reason for not getting the camera repaired was that there were a lot of very negative reviews on Amazon about Smart Guard and I was afraid they would try to wiggle out paying for the repair and then I would be stuck with it. So if she can get some money for me based on that e-mail it would make me a very happy camper. Not hanging by my thumbs waiting, but at least it is a possibility.

HI, I agree with you about the possibility of this camera having problems due to the mishap that are not discovered by the factory and that pop up six months down the road. Between that mishap and the fact that the camera failed to operate during a winter workshop when it was about six months old, I just want to start from scratch with a new camera body. I thought from the write-ups on the k-1 that my three Pentax lenses would work on the K-1 (18-135 kit lens that came with the K-70, the 55-300 and a 100mm macro) but another poster asked me if I had full-frame lenses so maybe they wouldn't work. I don't trust myself with an $1800 camera so I'm going to stick with the K-70 and bite the bullet and buy a new body. Hopefully this has taught me a very expensive lesson. Thanks for all your replies.

Hi, I had a recent disaster with my K-70 - camera fell off of tripod, screen broke off. When I had the camera six months, it failed to work on a winter photo shoot. Sent it to Precision. They cleaned it and adjusted it but the comment on the return paper work makes me think they had no idea what caused it. For this recent disaster, Advance Camera says autofocus motor is jammed plus they can't get the part to fix the screen/hinge and will have to send it to the factory for repair. I have a protection plan but I've been reading the recent reviews for it and figure they will try to weasel out of it. My photo teacher figures repairs will probably be around $300-400 and that I should think about the K-1. I see Pentax has announced the K-1 Mark II becoming available in April from Adorama. I'm trying to decide between just getting a new K-70 body or getting a K-1 body (either from Amazon not Adorama), but not waiting for the K-1 Mark Ii. Evidently there will be some sort of upgrade available for K-1 owners to incorporate K-1 Mark II functions but I will not want to do that. One other thing is worrying me is that I don't know how confident I can be that the factory will uncover everything that could have been harmed by the fall off the tripod. This time around I will call the outfit that insures my car and house and insure my gear through them. Sooooooo, what do you think? Thanks.

Advice requested - Send camera to factory or back to me from Advance Camera?

Hi, Thanks for your responses. Advance cannot get the part to fix the hinge/screen but they could fix the autofocus motor. Their response said they would be returning it to the factory if I agree to do that. I don't know but I don't think that means Precision. So I'm thinking I'll have Advance send it to the factory and have the factory write up an estimate and see what that says and take it from there. The protection plan was purchased through Amazon. I have written to them to ask what they require. Joyce Keay

Hi, I had a disaster with my K-70 a few weeks ago. It fell off its tripod into sand and the LCD screen broke off. I sent it to Advance Camera for diagnosis. Here is their report: "The auto focus motor in the body is jammed. The lens mount is straight, so there is a chance we could repair the motor. However, while we can obtain a replacement LCD screen, the hinge is sheared off and would need to be replaced and we are unable to find that part available. This camera requires factory service since we cannot obtain this part. We can forward the camera to the factory for you or we can send it back to you."

So, will it be worthwhile to repair it or not? I sent the lens to them also so even if the camera is DOA, I should probably get the lens sent back to me so I can sell it as it sounds like that was not harmed.

Since beginning this post I heard back from Advance Camera telling me what the procedure would be for sending the camera to the factory for repair. I have a protection plan so I will contact them also to get some idea of what I should do.

TIA. Joyce Keay

How useful is K-70 flip screen?

I take full blame for the tripod going over. As I mentioned, I had just arrived at the spot and I probably did not spend the time required to make sure the tripod was securely placed. The tripod is a good one and quite heavy so I don't think the quality of the tripod was an issue. It was on sand, so I could have made it very secure. Also because it was on sand, I really do think that if the screen had not been extended that there was a good possibility that there would have been no damage to the camera or lens, as it fell to the side, not forward toward the lens. Lesson learned for sure!

Hi, I've got Pentax lenses 18-135, 55-300 and macro 100. I'm thinking about buying the 150-450. Reviews on Amazon are excellent but it is a lot of money. Once you bought your 150-450 did you sell your 55-300 or do you still use it? Thanks.

While on a photo shoot a couple of weeks ago I had just arrived at a particular location. K-70 was on the tripod. I turned around to ask the instructor a question. He was about to answer and then looked horrified. I looked around to find the tripod with camera attached on the ground in the sand. The screen had broken off. The camera is now at Advance Camera being repaired. I took some pictures after the mishap and the camera seemed to be operating OK. So I'm thinking that if the camera had a normal screen that there might not have been any damage. Just a thought.

Sweet Spots for Pentax 18-135, 55-300 and 100mm Macro lenses?

What I'm taking away from this discussion is that if possible on my two zoom lenses (18-135 mm and 55-300 mm) I should try for an aperture of f/5.6 if that is appropriate for how I want the background to look, and try to stay away from both extreme ends of their zooming capability. For the macro, I will try for whatever aperture gives me what I need for depth of field. I've got a ring light on order so according to one youtube video, when using that, I can set the camera at f/22 and 1/250. Thanks again.

Hi, Thank you all for your amazingly comprehensive responses to my question. I really appreciate the time you've all taken to answer what I thought was a pretty simple question. Guess I was wrong. I bought my Pentax K-70 in August of 2016 so I'm relatively new to the wonderful world of DSLRs. Yes, I was referring to sharpness sweet spots as that seems to be the hardest thing for me to achieve - tack sharpness. I am referring to the screw-down version of the 55-300. I will take notes regarding best apertures for the various lenses and look forward to better shots.

Hi, I'm wondering if the sweet spot for lenses is pretty much the same for all samples of one particular lens. In other words, could I ask what the sweet spots are for Pentax 18-135, 55-300 and 100mm macro lenses or do I need to check this out for my lenses? If each type of lens has pretty much the same sweet spot across all samples, is there a site that lists the sweet spot for all the Pentax lenses. Thanks. Joyce Keay

Error message on K-70 - "Card not formatted"

Here's a new wrinkle on the situation. Since my last post I attended a one-hour lecture on importing in Lightroom. Since all importing from the camera is supposed to be done while in Lightroom (according to the speaker), I asked about deleting photos from the camera in Finder rather than in Lightroom. The speaker suggested I reformat the card in the camera every time after downloading photos from the camera to Lightroom. I am brand new to Lightroom and am just learning my way around the Library module. I'm not convinced Lightroom is for me. I'm very happy with Elements, but that's a whole different topic.

Hi, Thanks for the suggestion but I think that as long as this does not happen with pictures on the camera, I'll just put up with having to reformat the card when it happens. I am going to call Apple about this tomorrow to see what they have to say. Who knows. It could be a glitch in Sierra.

Hi, Thank you all for your replies. Funny thing is that the card has not been out of the camera's slot since its purchase. It has also never given me an error message when there have been new pictures on it. I think I've got it figured out. After I download pictures from the camera to the computer, I am supposed to click the triangle icon in Finder to "eject" the camera/card from the computer (make it disappear from Finder) before unplugging the cord from the computer. Sometimes it takes a while before the camera/card disappears from the Finder listing of devices. If I don't unplug the cord in a timely fashion, the camera/cord will reappear in Finder (very annoying). So I think it has to do with timing - exactly when I unplug the cord. Thankfully: 1) it only happens occasionally, 2) it only takes a few seconds to reformat, and 3) that it has never happened with new pictures on the camera. I think this is something Apple could fix. I'm going to post this problem on the Yahoo Mac group page.
