Here is my boy Rocco. I don't really know how to make adjustments in black and white. I tend to tinker till it looks dramatic -- but I think I go to far for most people's taste. Thank you for any input.

You're not afraid to dismantle a laptop? Now that is downright sexy! (Bet you don't hear that much)
I've spoken to so many chickens recently.
SO about this thermal protection --is that something that protects my system from the damages of heat? Is it software or hardware? I'm hoping it's protecting it in a way other than the message telling me "I'm hot! Turn me off"
Yes-- I am a teacher-- but the only angle I've managed to work as far as a discount was on Corel Draw 13 (it's like illustrator) for $100 (vs $450) and Painter.
I think teacher can sometimes get deals on MAC's but I didn't want a MAC. I use one for work-- I'm a PC girl. I tried to see about discounts on Adobe and they were for larger packages than just the CS3 (at least what I could find). I unded up upgrading from elements for $300 --I figure that was as good as it was gonna get!

CS3 reinstall on new computer

Marc,
Thanks for advice to deactivate. I was able to deactivate on the old laptap (it pains me to call my 2yr old beast OLD) by using a fan aimed directly at the vents and a cool pad underneath to keep the heat down. That worked great! Still got the system errors alerting to the heat, and it was slow with 50-80% CPU usage with nothing open. But I was able to deactivate. Now I am less worried about serious damage, other than the fan issue -- since it worked a little better when I resolved the heat issue.

My old laptop runs XP and the new one will be Vista (w/serice pack). I think I've read they have worked out alot of issues with Vista--but I am reading a few things online that concern me about the 64 bit version I am getting. I'm not afraid to tinker to get things working--and maybe these comments are written by serious novices --but I'm concerned. Some people say things like "be prepared to buy all new software!" That is a scary thought.

I have read that CS4 is optimized for 64 bit Vista --but I wasn't really planning to update. Although, I just bought CS3 in July-- I think they owe me a free update! Free would be good. That's about what I can afford --having just bought a new camera, lenses, lots of toys to go with --and a laptop--which lead me to buy a 22" monitor since I am going from a 17" to a 14.1". My eyesight ain't the best. Man-- sounds like I need a sugar daddy!:D
Thanks for all your help!

CS3 reinstall on new computer

I'm pretty good about keeping things out of start up. Therefore I'm worried what it could mean having 100% draw on the CPU! Best Buy techies said it may be "in survival mode" since the system detects a hardware issue (not safe mode, that would be software according to BB). They were not willing to go under the hood, so today I got a 2nd opinion and he thinks the 100% CPU usage MAY be more serious -- motherboard issues possibly. Seems everywhere I go I have to leave money behind and still have a bad laptop.
I'm hoping to do what another member suggested--turn it on long enough to disable CS3 so I can still have 2 installs.
While we're here...anyone know about issues with the 64bit Vista and software compatibility? (This is on the new HP --arriving in a few days) Mostly I'm worried about CS3 but I also use Corel Painter, Draw, Poser --and I'm wondering if all of my software will be useless. Hopefully these programs are just a matter of downloading new drivers.
Advice/comments welcome!

Marc and Ole, Thanks for your help! I wasted my time searching online before coming to the experts. I'm so relieved to hear the licensing will allow me to install on two machines. Marc -- when my laptop arrives in the next week I may need your help. Thanks for the offer.

CS3 reinstall on new computer

My 2 yr old laptop needs a new fan and it seems I'm going to have to send it out of town to bring it back to life--no telling how long it will be on vacation. While helping someone find a new laptop with good specs on black Friday, I found a deal so good- I got one for myself.:D
I want to reinstall CS3 on the new laptop (which I believe means I can't use it on my first one). Does anyone have any information about how to get the same serial number to be taken a second time on the new laptop?
I read on the adobe website that I have to go into the program and deactivate the first copy. I can't do that since my old laptop is running so poorly--CPU is running at 100% with no open programs -- its too stressed to open CS3. There has to be a way around it.
I'm just wondering if anyone has had this problem and solved it without calling Adobe? With the release of CS4, I'm assuming I'd be waiting on hold for some time.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Kelly

I figure there is a small window of opportunity to post really unremarkable photos --and that time is when you are very new to camera ownership. These were taken at work--with my students--who love my picture taking addiction.

The kids went to run around in PE and I thought I'd try capturing motion. Then there's the unexplainable mustache picture...I was bored and sharpies and scotch tape are just so handy. My girls didn't want to be left out-- they opted for a unibrow.

How to HDR

I'm no expert but I will tell you what I know. HDR is high Dynamic Range. The image has detail in the dark areas and the light areas as well. Usually in high contrast scenes the photographer has to expose for one or the other, or some happy medium--but the sacrafice is deatail on the light or dark end.
HDR is usually done by shooting the very same photo (on a tripod) in 3 or more various exposures-- from over to under exposed so all the information is gathered. Then software is used to combine the best of all the images--resulting in detailed shadow areas and highlight areas. I use photoshop CS3 and within the program there is a way to have the computer combine the images for you and create the image. I have also seen some tutorials online where people create their own HDR -- basically using alot of layers each exposed differently, then using blend modes and alot of sharpening until they get the desired effect. Check around the internet --there are lots of tutorials available.

Thanks Gary. Here it is 5:30 am and your information has me scaring my cat trying to stop his "motion" with a flash. It ain't LBA but it's certainly some sort of an addiction! Ok--I will officially end my thread! Just a moment of silence...there. All done!
And I will commence to PMs. I like having friends. And you guys seem sorta close to normal...except for the facial hair...
Thanks again.

YEA!!! I'm V.P.!!
Ok, so when I have a question...should I start a NEW post? (That has an ugly and sad ring to it.)
And more importantly, will I lose my VP crown when this thread gets down to the spool???!
I don't really know the forum road map. Maybe I should just call you and Ray and Gary at home? (HeeHeeHee-- you know that was funny!)

Thanks Ray. I was looking back over the wealth of info from yesterday and had a question. You said the flash was used at just a fraction of exposure time. Is that something I can try with the onboard flash, or only with an off camera flash? You guys have made flash look good to me again!

Peter,
I had another look at your slide show and I really loved the images. It reminds me of a class I took yrs ago- "Understanding Art". The main point of the class was answering the question "what is art?" and the great debate was -- could you call "a pretty picture" art, or (as the professor believed) the artist had an obligation to the viewer to make us FEEL something -- rather it be humor, anger, peace, meloncholy, whatever.

It was clear that the professor believed pretty pictures without meaning were not art-- he acknowledge that they require technique and talent--but if the thought/feeling was missing-- he believed it could not be called art (I think he had a few great minds to back this theory up).

When I look at your images they tell a story and evoke emotion -- so they are certainly art. Rather you have a heart for our war heroes, or simply love a weathered face-- they are beautiful, thoughtful, well composed images, that probably make different people feel differnet things. Bravo!
On another note, I'd love to be pointed towards some macro threads now that you and Ray have made it look so good.

Peter,
Beautiful. I love the story your pictures tell. Those guys are heroes and you captured that.
LBA? Define your terms man! Sounds like you're talking dirty to the lass!:D
Thank you for the info on f-stop being exponential growth-- I teach alot of math, that is something I can understand! I'm very interested in trying macro--but it seems like I will need more light to get anywhere near the clarity and sparkle you pros can get. I'd love to read more about that if you can send me in the right direction.
I'm going to try the new kit lens today with my little kiddies at recess just for comparison sake--but I do believe it won't be nearly fast enough to capture their crazed movements. Once I figured that out-- that every piece of glass is not created equal-- I went right to amazon and started pricing faster glass--wow! Not the hobby for a teacher! I need a second job.
Thanks for all your help!
Kelly

So do you spray the plants down with a sugary concoction to attract all that "traffic"? How far away from the action are you? And the flash is off the camera I suppose. And the flash is really just a little fraction of a second??? At the end of the shutter? Sorry...the questions are just flowing, hu?
SO what lens were you using when that monster butterfly was dinning on a dinner plate of food? You make macro sexy!! And I mean that in the best possible way!
