Quite a lot of software can be set up so that updates are either installed automatically (which is not my favoured approach), or to indicate that such an enhancement is available.

Are there any words / expressions in listings that immediately put you on your guard ? I'm thinking of 'Vintage' (unless for truly vintage items), 'Minty', 'Opened but not used', 'Unable to test', 'Was my father's', 'See pictures for details', 'Details on manufacturer's website', 'Comes without 'such-and-such', easily available on eBay', 'May have minor cosmetic damage', 'Very rare' - and inaccurate or inflated descriptions, more images of boxes or cases than the actual item, and any mis-spellings of details which are on the actual item (i.e. Marco Lens).

From what I recall, I tend to use daylight WB, shoot RAW and spot meter for brightest area - this inevitably underexposes dark areas, which can then be dealt with in PP. Not that I take many sunset / twilight / evening photos, but most of mine seem to come out with pleasantly saturated colours. The surroundings can have an effect as well - try shooting over water (a lake or on the coast) to provide reflections too. How have you manipulated your images in PP ? Most editing software enables you to increase contrast and lower exposure, which may give you a result closer to that which you hoped to achieve. Don't forget, camera meter systems are set up to render images as a mid-grey, and need to be adjusted to cope with other requirements.

As I have mentioned in other, non-related, areas, the problem as I see it is that there is a major fault in Reality.
I think this discussion is going to run and run. So am I.

Don't intend to bid on it, but was just amused by the description. These days, I think more people are dissuaded from purchasing if an article is described as large, or any variant thereof.

Woodwork Class
Teacher - 'What are you making, Melvin ?'
Melvin - 'A Portable'.
Teacher - 'Uh huh - a portable what ?'
Melvin - 'I don't know yet, I've only made the handle.'

Very nice. I've been there birding on many occasions. The skies in Norfolk are truly amazing in their breadth and variety - one of the reasons I moved here.

I take your point, and I must admit that my post was intended as somewhat tongue in cheek. However, I think during the course of this thread it has been established that currently combined camera and lens focus does not fulfil the expectations of the users, and it seems unlikely that manufacturers will be minded to do much to assist purchasers of their equipment to achieve the pixel-peeping perfection that some would wish, when these mfrs can safely ignore this minority and increase their profits by producing equipment with more 'enhancements' to entice the purchasers who are satisfied with less than the best.

Arise from thy posterior, pick up thy camera, and go outside. Spring is almost upon us, with photo opportunities galore you have never seen before. Just spend a half-hour in your local park, by your local river, or even in your garden. You should be able to find something worth photographing - you have the choice of landscape, wildlife, nature, macro, or even people if your fancy takes you that way. Don't forget, you regret the things you didn't do far more than those that you did.

When I had my first (Praktica) SLR, I used commercial processing. I wanted more of a panoramic image, so cut out an aperture of the desired proportions from a cereal packet (Weetabix, I think) and fitted it in the film gate. No in-camera mods needed, and it gave pretty much the result I wanted. I also did a similar mask in a heart shape, to photograph my then partner, with which she was impressed.

Forgive me if I am stating the blindingly obvious here, but testing under different lighting conditions and expecting consistent results may be counter-productive. Those with (fond) memories of film-era prime lenses may be aware that an infra-red focusing mark was engraved on each lens, as focus differed when using IR film - would this not also apply if the subject was primarily lit by infra-red illumination (i.e. if an IR filter was over the light source) ? Mayhap this principle also applies with other light sources ? Any experts care to correct me, please ?
Also, if 'twere me, I'd use a smaller aperture (unless really shallow DOF was required, which is unlikely in a group scenario) and higher ISO. And as for the putative wedding photographer making such adjustments, I would have thought that all these tests and adjustments would have been carried out and resolved long before she/he was actually taking the photos at the wedding.

Unless I need really rapid burst shooting (cycle race, for instance), when I will use JPG on natural, I invariably shoot RAW, so I can control the images in post. Been lucky so far - every collision with the ground has led to me landing first, so the camera has been protected.

My (very simplistic) way of looking at it is food-related ! For me, a JPEG is like a take-away, whereas a RAW file is similar to obtaining the ingredients and 'processing' them in a way that you find gives a meal you really enjoy - the preparation adds to the anticipation of the finished article, with the bonus that if you are not satisfied you can start again. Also, as you become more skilled in preparation and processing, you may wish to re-visit previous images and proceed in a different manner. One word of advice - save the wine until the job is complete. BTW, I use XnView and FastStone for processing - both free and feature-packed, with less of a learning curve than some software.

With my notorious clumsiness, plus the way that inanimate objects conspire to impede me, bump in to me, trip me up and push me around, I suspect this would cost me a fortune in lenses ! I prefer to have them in padded compartments in my bag, wishing to maybe lose shots rather than damage or destroy lenses. I have always envied the less-clumsy amongst us.
