Takumar lens hoods

If you mean M42 mount Takumar 135 f/3.5 (silver version) then it uses two part hood without lens designation that was compatible with 105 f/2.8 preset lens. Both parts of the hood are black painted not the later ones where you have silver and black part. You can use SERIES VII filters with these hoods.

Have a look here: Asahi Pentax M37 and M42 lenses and accessories - Home in lens repair section. There is an exploded diagram of this lens that should help you with the repair. However, you would need some proper tools for that, don't try to repair it without quality lens spanners and quality screwdrivers.

K30 to K5II - - what say ??

I think that given that K30 is not that far apart from K5II the difference in the output will not be that visible (don't they share the same sensor anyway?). A much better (and long lasting) investment would have been a quality prime lens such as FA43. In my case this lens made much more difference than changing the body - 50mm A 1.7 => FA43 and K10D => K01.

Unusual 49mm Takumar hood - need to identify

Thanks for the input. I also have the older version with 46mm threads and two versions with 49mm threads. The two parts hoods are designed to take Series VII filters that were very popular in the 1950s. What is unusual about the hood I have is not only the lettering that became all capital when Pentax moved from Super-Takumar to S-M-C TAKUMAR lenses but also the finish - it's mat while hoods from late1950s are all glossy. Also look at your S-M-C lenses or hoods - it says - "ASAHI OPT. CO., JAPAN" while Super-Takumar is: "ASAHI OPT Co, Japan". I assume this hood was made in the1979s for one of the lenses with 49mm filter threads. The question is which one.

Unusual 49mm Takumar hood - need to identify

I had this hood for some time but just realized that it is very unusual. This is a two part hood with 49mm threads for 50mm Super-Takumar lenses from early 1960s. They had similar hood with 46mm threads in late 1950s and these hoods fitted nearly all the lenses in the Pentax system. That’s why they do not say which lens they are made for. Asahi switched to dedicated hoods in mid 1960s and no longer manufactured two part hoods.

This hood is very unusual as the lettering on it is unmistakably from S-M-C era – early 1970s. Note all capital characters on ASAHI. OPT. CO. This hood was manufactured to match capital lettering on S-M-C lenses. Anyone knows which lens it was made for since all S-M-C lenses have dedicated hoods. Any help would be appreciated.

M42s - What's the best?

For the starters I would go with the S-M-C versions of Takumars you mentioned. 35/3.5 is really sharp, 28/3.5 is great also. 50/1.4 can be pricy and is extremely soft wide open, instead I would go for SMC version of 55/1.8 or 55/2 (they are the same lens but 55/2 has a washer to make its widest aperture f/2). All of these lenses can be found under $50 on the US ebay. If you like the feel and results you can start exploring the older versions. My preferred tele lens is 135 f/2.5 Model II - I never seen better results, but this lens is expensive and many sellers disguise the earlier inferior versions so unless you know how to distinguish the versions of this lens it can be a lottery.
