K-30 internal battery / capacitor replacement for clock

My K-3 had the same problem. None of the other functions were affected, but the lack of correct date and time messed up my indexing.
With just twelve days of Warranty remaining, I contacted RICOH/PENTAX, and sent it off to their official repairers, NIKKEN Techno France in Paris, and am expecting it back on Monday 13th.
I guess that the lesson here is, if there's something wrong with the camera, get it fixed straight away, and don't leave it until the last minute, as I did.

Macro versus Telephoto lenses for long distance shooting

Wow, thanks everybody for your very helpful replies. I guess that a bird was not a very good subject to suggest.
I print a lot of photos at A3+ size, and I felt that cropping the picture, and in effect throwing away half?? the Mps would leave me less to play around with when composing my final print.
My main objection to using a macro lens, (mine is the 90mm 2.8 Tamron), as an all purpose every day lens is its narrow field of view, and as such I reserve it for insects, flowers, and such subjects.
When I'm out hiking and climbing hills, I take my K-3, but can't manage to carry multiple lenses with me, (too much weight), and just take my Sigma 17 - 70 2.8 - 4.5 zoom (heresy, I admit), as a compromise.
I took a photo of the Pic de Midi in the Pyrenees from Marciac, a distance of 68km, using my Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ60 at max zoom, which I couldn't even see with the naked eye, but just turned out to be a lucky accidental shot.
I guess that what I mean is that we all make our personal choices, according to our needs.

My K-3 is presently away at the Ricoh Pentax repair facility for correction of this fault, under warranty. I hope that everything works when I get it back.

I have a K3 too, which replaced my K30, which suffered, out of the warranty period, with a failed "aperture block".
I really like it - feels as solid as a rock, and has masses variable control features for any situation.

However it did have one minor problem, which was the Date and Time settings being lost every time that I changed the battery, and if I forgot to reset them, it messed up my photo indexing system.

Fortunately (???), this happened two weeks before my warranty expired, and so it is now away at the repairers, being fixed.

So, enjoy your K3, may it give you many years faithful service.

Macro versus Telephoto lenses for long distance shooting

Please help me settle this dispute.

An older friend maintains that he can produce a better photo image of an object, bird, whatever, 500 or more yards away, taken with a 22Mp camera using a 100mm Macro lens than is possible using a 200mm telephoto prime lens with the same camera.

Then cropping / blowing up the photos to cover the same area of the object.

He is very stubborn on this point, but I Cannot agree w
Who is right ? Please help here.:(

Anyone else miss the K200D?

I've still got my K100D and K200D, both working just fine, but foolishly perhaps, I bought a K30 which failed after about eighteen months ; BAD BUY.
Not satisfied, I then bought a K3, which forgets the date and time whoever I change the battery. It is also much too complicated for my needs, and has a limited battery life compared with the AA cells in my earlier cameras.
At the moment my iMac, on El Capitan, cannot read the last lot of photos taken with the K3, but has no problems with those from the K200.
It seems that I reached for the stars, but they just turned out to be a candle in the wind.:mad:

Thank for your replies. Yes, it would seem that I reinstalled the old firmware.
I'll delete any old stuff and try Pentax.jp in the morning.
Its getting on for midnight here in France, and I need a clear head.

Pentax K3 Firmware update to v1.30 and Date and time settings

I presently have a K3 with v1.21 and am trying to update to v1.30
I am following all the specified procedures, formatted SD card, fwdc220b, right down to START - press OK - NOW LOADING and COMPLETE, which is fine.
Everything would seem to be alright, but when I turn the camera back ON, it still shows the old version v1.21.
I have tried several times, starting from scratch with newly formatted cards each time, but still end up with the same old v1.21

The camera is not yet a year old and still under warranty, and since I am also getting a problem with the date and time slipping back to 2013, I am anxious to get everything working correctly as quickly as possible

I would be grateful for any suggestions regarding the Firmware Update, as this may ??? possibly have something to do with the Time slippage.

Any ideas please

Pulled out my K-30 today for the first time in about a year... NO APERTURE CONTROL?!

Yes, I did use green-button settings with the Tokina 400mm to set the focal length, but it didn't seem to make much difference what aperture I selected.
I have abandoned the K30 now, and can't remember exactly what the results were, but will get it out and go through the procedures again if you are interested.

My K30 Aperture Block failed after just 2 years and 2 months. I found that I could still use it with my Tamron 90mm macro lens, and also my Tokina 4OOmm, both of which have manual settings. However, whatever aperture I set, the result turned out as "fully open" at maximum aperture, which was pretty restrictive.
Since I have only Pentax-fit lenses, I decided on another Pentax
First, I ordered a K50, since it was pretty close to the K30, but after reading adverse comments on this Forum, I cancelled it, and ordered a K70, only to cancel it again, due to further comments on the same Aperture Block.
In the end, I got the K3, which is allegedly more reliable, and not being an "expert", satisfies all my needs.
It feels very solid, and up to now, I am very pleased with it, and just hope that it will be problem free.
I still have my old K100D and K200, both of which continue to function perfectly, with no problems whatsoever - different Aperture Block ?
For a pocket camera, I have a Lumix DMC TZ60.
Like Oricam, I tend to take a lot of shots. I am not a "Dedicated" photographer, but like hiking and travelling, and take photos as I "see" them, of things that I might never see again, which can result in wastage.
Where I do take more care is in photographing insects and flowers, and there is little wastage there.
Post-Production Modification ? I don't do a great deal, but use Mac and Polarr as necessary.
To me, having lived since before even Calculators and Ballpoint Pens , Digital Photography seems almost like having a Magic Wand.

My K30 is also a victim of this problem. It seems somewhat intermittent, and the only way to get round it is to use my TAMRON 90mm Macro lens in manual focus mode, and a Tokina 400mm telephoto lens, also in manual focus. the only problem seems to be that the aperture remains at f2.8 in both, irrespective of what I try to set it at.
I still have my old K100D and K200D, which I can use with my other lenses, including a Sigma 17 - 70mm, but their pixel count is rather low for the A3+ prints that I like to make ( 13" x 19").
Its really disappointing, since the K30 did everything that I needed.
I have considered buying a K50, but that also seems to have the same problem.
I don't like the KS series, so my next option seems to be the K-70, which is stated to have "Electronic Aperture control"
Does this mean that Ricoh have stepped away from the faulty Control Block, or is this just a new name for the same old thing?
Anybody got any ideas?

Hi there,
mine are now starting to fall, and as I have a lot of big trees in the garden, it's a tough job clearing them away.

I've hovered around this forum for some years now, and may at one stage even been a member.
Its great that people with similar interests can communicate with each other, and find solutions to their problems, and help others with theirs.
I'm not really a dedicated photographer, but enjoy taking photos of things that I see on my travels, mainly landscapes, interesting buildings, insects and flowers among other things. Unfortunately I only started relatively late in my life, much to my regret.
I am sure the I can learn a lot here, and hopefully can also contribute something too.
