HiFi upgraditis is just the audio version of what photographers refer to as LBA. The cure for both is the same - just buy the best there is. Like you, I bought a Linn Sondek LP12 in the mid-80's and suddenly, the upgraditis went away.
The difference between a Linn Sondek LP12 and "just well-made and reliable consumer electronics" is simple. If you have a Linn, you probably still listen to vinyl LPs regularly and think they are wonderful. The "reliable consumer electronics" will probably only get a spin once every Preston Guild.

I already had some K-mount lenses, so a Pentax DSLR (K200D) was a natural choice, given that there were no compelling reasons to buy anything else.

I doubt that the 35-70 is worth buying if you already have the kit lens.
I have the Rikenon 35-70 which scores identically on Photodo and it stays in my kit bag. I use the 18-55mm AL II kit lens for probably 80% or more of the photos I take. Most of the rest are taken using a SMC-M 75-150mm zoom, which is a very good (and very cheap) lens.

Yeah, me too.
I bought my first Pentax, a K200D with MK2 kit lens, just before Xmas as my first serious foray into the world of digital photography. Fortunately, I've got a few K-mount lenses that I used with a Ricoh KR10X that work fine with the K200D - a Rikenon 50mm f2, Sigma 28mm, Sigma 135mm, Takumar 80-210mm zoom and I've recently bought a Pentax 75-150mm zoom too for a song off Ebay.
Cheers
