I like the yoga mat idea. Gives a little padding too which could come in handy for elbows.

I'd like something that is easy to carry that I can spread on the ground and lay on while shooting at low levels in the woods. It's often wet. I have thought of a chaep plastic camo colored tarp. Does anyone have any better ideas?

K1II and K3II

I realize there have been many threads about the subject, but I'll ask anyway. I've decided to pass my K3 on to my daughter but I still have my K3ii which I enjoy. I have 5 lenses including the 150-450 zoom. The rest are APS-C.
So I'm toying with the idea of filling the void in my kit with another camera body but it would only make sense to get something that would offer something different than my k3ii. Do I have to do this? No. Can I wait? Yes. I have thought of looking for a used K1 or maybe a KP, however the KP has some drawbacks to the K3ii as I have been reading about it.
If I were to pursue a K-1 then I suppose I would have to buy lenes as well or will the APS-C lenses work? I understand that there may be a new APS-C in the future as well.
Is anyone else using two different formats? I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I saw a Tamron 18-250 Macro Aspherical on the forum from Mighty Mike. I just bought a used K3 for my daughter and am looking for an inexpensive way to get her started.
What do you think of the Tamron?

Also, what is the difference between "PK" mount lenses and K mount? Ebay has several PK mount lenses for what seem to be very low prices. Will they work on a K3?

My lens is the 18-135 and came with my K-3 when I bought it new about 4 years ago. I was asking because the zoom is not as tight, meaning when the camera is hanging with the lens down the zoom will drift. I bought one of those rubber bands for it to create some friction and it works fine. I was considering upgrading if there were two different lenses.
Thanks for the responses.

Is the SMC Pentax-DA 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF] DC WR the same as the kit lens? If not what is the difference?
Thank you

Lots of things to review thank you all.
I did have the camera on a tri-pod and shake reduction was on. I eventually used my remote to fire the shutter but I'm not sure how well the auto focus worked. I agree with the setting being terrible. The shots were taken out of an open second story window because it was by chance that the cranes were out and they are easily startled so I thought "why not", but I definately get the point.
How many focus points should I be setting up for? What happened to the 5th shot? Nothing is in focus? I took many more photos but they are all about the same quality so I didn't want to overload you.
In a case like this derekkite, is there a way to get detail of the bird rather than the autofocus selecting the vegitation as it did?
The camera was set to AFS. The filter is a UV filter that I have on for lens protection.
I'll start woking in P mode, look for some better scenes (contrast) and see about a scale to test front and back focus.
I'll also have to read up on focus points in the digital book I bought about the camera.
Do you find using live view works better? One of the things I don't like about Pentax lenses is the focus ring. I have a difficult time determining if its in focus or not. Whish it were a split. Any suggestions?
I'll be back..thanks again.

I finally got around to taking a few shots for you to review. These were shot in green mode using the Pentax 1.4x tele-converter and a B&W XS pro digital filter. The cranes were about 100 yards away (+ or -).
I consider myself sub-amerature in that I hardly ever get out to use my equiment so each time is like a new begining wich is unfortunate.
These are samples only for your technical review. I did not intend them to be reviewed for artistic value. I need to figure out how to use the equipment I have first.
Given the distance I woud want to crop them if they were to be keepers. Once you crop the image steadily gets worse. Am I expecting too much?
Your advice will be greatly appreciated.

Getting eyes checked Monday...may be part of the problem. I've also been shooting through a window recently due to the weather and that's a problem, so I will get outside and take some test shots before doing anything and submit for your review, but it will be a little while.

How do you clean a really dirty sensor?

It's been a long time since I made this post so I thought I would follow up for those that might be interested.
Believe it or not I just got around to dealing with this early this morning! Camera had been working fine so I let it alone until I could focus (no pun intended) on the job at hand.
I bought the items that were recommended by you immediately after returning from my trip back in June...just opened them last night.

So this morning I set out to remove the focus screen....read a post from this forum. It was very easy to do. Once I had it off I could see that the bristle was stuck to the prism mirror..I used my new jet blower, held the camera upside down and blew off the mirror. I then blew out the rest of the camera.
Looked thru the view finder and the problem was gone.

I reassembled and then ran the sensor dust check...nothing..clean as a whistle! I have been running the sensor cleaning action on shut down and will continue to do so.
So now I have some cleaning supplies that I can save for another day :). Camera works great and all is good. I also learned some things in the process.
Thank you all and Happy New Year!

Funny Savoche....I never even checked! I assumed as did others that saw it...that it was a night shot! How embarassing.

Ok, call off the need for help....and thank you all for jumping in. Sorry to waste your time.
