are there really 10,000+ unhappy pentax users out there or are there a lot more sympathetic users than unhappy ones?
i am the target audience for pentax - amateur photographer - and i own or have owned an SDM lens along with DA's and F/FA's and i am happy with their products.
at the same time, i can definitely sympathise with those who have problems with their gear. as well, there are decisions pentax/hoya makes that i am not happy about (like deciding not to make any truly fast DA lenses except the lonely 55mm... grrrr...) but at the same time i wouldn't say that i am unhappy with the gear i have or pentax overall.
so instead of real statistics which show the number of defects/failures and, perhaps more importantly, the number of first time vs repeat defects/failures what we have are threads like these where everyone takes a side without hearing the full story or seeing real data...

i can see why ben would want to reach out to the pentax community when he is frustrated with the company's service or gear.
however by making his frustrations public he invites questions which i think are completely legit.
without answers to those questions we are only getting a fraction of the story and communication is pretty much one way. i suppose that might be what ben wants although it can make readers and participants of this thread frustrated...

here's what the lens looks like on my camera. i don't know if you can tell from the photo but even with the hood on it doesn't look huge although it doesn't look very small either. i would say it's just right.
i wanted to take some test shots last night but it was way too late by the time i got around to it so i'll try again this weekend.
i will say that AF works exactly as i expected. it hunts a little when wide open in low light but otherwise locks focus pretty quickly on my K7. good ol' screw drive works just fine :cool:

i've been wishing and waiting for a cheap (<$150) fast 50mm since i got my k100d back in the day. considering SoCaNikon all have one in their lineup you would think that pentax would follow...
but pentax is not about following the other guys. sometimes that's a good thing and other times not so much.
i don't know about everyone else but i don't expect anything faster than f2.4 to appear in the DA lineup, well, ever. (although i secretly hope that pentax proves me wrong).
