It was a few years ago when I sent one in but the response was pretty prompt. I want to say over all it took about two weeks before I had my lens back.

I use my Pentax 50 mm 1.4 90% of the time for portraits. It's a great lens. Especially if you happen to shoot indoor natural light portraits, it gives you more room to work with.

I find that very impressive! In the best of light my K10 would have picked up a branch 95% of the time. Thanks for posting as I am still on the fence with my upgrade and this helps.

It is a very sharp lens. I think you will really enjoy it. I rarely take it off my k10d. I have found 2.5 to be my sweet spot on the 50 1.4. At 1.4 the boken is a bit choppy and really hard to nail with a moving subject.

Thanks all for the replies. I have the 50 1.4 and love it. It rarely leaves my camera but I'm itching for something longer yet still fast.
Ben I would love to see some of your 50-135 portraits. It's the lens I am leaning most towards but I have seen some amazing macro shots with the 100 that have me wanting it just for fun.
Sounds like a very exciting assignment!

I hang out on a few pro portrait forums and 99% of them are shooting Canon and Nikon. I would love to hear (and see some galleries) some from pro Pentax portrait shooters.
Especially full length portraits taken with the 50-135 2.8 or the 100 wr 2.8. I'm trying to decide between the two.
Anybody out there? :)

All the labs I once used for film have stopped processing film so I don't have any personal experience to offer. However I currently have a roll loaded in my 645n so I've been doing some digging. I've heard really good things about Richards Photo Lab in California. I've always had a fear of mailing off my film so I think if I had a local place I would try them first.
I've also heard good things about Millers in Kansas.

Wow! That one had two fairly new bidders. I wonder if the seller will actually get payment. However if that is really what they are going for these days it may be time to sell my beloved 645n stuff. Eh who am I kidding I could never let it go. The 150 lens and extra backs yes, but not my 75 and body. Love the set up. Even if I never load another roll of film, I love the sound of the shutter too much. I also have a Yashica Mat 124 g I doubt I can ever let go either. I haven't looked lately to see what kind of price they are bringing in.
So is it the 654D that is causing this new interest in 645 lenses?

I've had my k10d for 4 years and it still takes beautiful pictures. 36K shots and still no real problems that deem it unusable . It has some funky quirks with the buttons now and then but usually all I have to do is turn it off and back on. I need a new camera just for the higher iso capabilities. When talking to my husband however I really play up those little quirks simply because he has no clue what higher ISO capability means. ;o)

Yes, sorry I did mean focus. It could probably be sharpened up a little bit if you have photoshop. It's still a nice shot and one I could never get!

I'm sorry I don't have any experience with smug mug at all. I think your fee is fair and reasonable but with all the money talk I wouldn't be surprised if they decide to go free point and shoot route. If not I agree with you here, nothing ventured nothing gained. As long as you are ok going in knowing it may be for experience only. Be sure and let us know the outcome!

I really like what Manel did. I took it another step and converted to b&W, however I still think I like Manel's best.
Enjoy your new gift, my 50mm rarely leaves my camera. You had a tough job to do catching him with sharp focus at 1/60 and 1.8. He is a cutie and I love the hat.

Yes disquieting but I love it.
I agree tough shot to frame. Although the vertical crop really improves the photo, my eye goes right to the doll now while still keeping all the neccessary info to tell the story.
I find myself wanting to get down to the dolls level but it looks like the grass would have obstructed the view down there. I probably would have cheated and taken a second shot after repositioning her.

Beautiful black and white conversion! I too love the house in the background and feel it has a movie set feel to it. What is the lighting on this? I can't figure it out, it looks like night, but her face is so well lit and there are shadows being cast on the house from the tree. I'm intrigued. Would also love to hear your lens and settings for this.

The biggest question I think you can ask yourself is 'do I want to get in to event photography down the road?' Either way, I don't see that you have anything much to lose. I don't think I'd like the pay later part though. Lots of pre-pro folks shoot just for the experience and portfolio building so I say if you can earn a little cash and have the experience and don't mind the possibility of walking away with only experience in your pocket should they decide to stiff you later.
Do you know what kind of lighting you would be dealing with? How many people will be there? Just a few other questions that would be my first thoughts to consider before accepting the job.
One other thing I would consider would be the prints. I would want to be picky about where they are printed. Word of mouth can be a powerful business builder so you want to make sure your prints look their best. Also, consider if you are going to want to sell your digital files down the road or not. (I'm a control freak and I do not sell digital files but I have several pro-photog friends that do and are quite happy and well paid doing so.) I know that seems like a lot to consider for this event but you could be setting a precedent for future word of mouth clients.
Speaking of a check list, if you do decide to do it, I would try to get an outline of just what the expectations are of you.
I'm probably way over thinking this from a business standpoint when the truth of the matter is you should probably just go shoot and have a good time with your new toy. :) (Emphasis on having a good time, if you feel it's going to cause you undue stress than for sure skip it.)

After doing some research on just how wonderful the k 5 is and looking at some shots taken with it by members here, I am happy to say I'm looking forward to sticking it out with Pentax! Yes, I will wait until the sensor issue has been fixed but I feel it will be completely worth it!

This brings to mind a question that runs through my head when I view some of the beautiful work posted here. Seems like stolen work getting false credit is becoming an internet issue. Yet, I never see a watermark on pics posted here, just curious why that is?

Just a quick end note on this thread for me. I have decided to get the k 5 (after waiting out the sensor issue a bit longer) and the Pentax 50-135 2.8 lens. I think just buying the lens right now for my k10d is going to satisfy my cravings until I feel I can buy the k5 with confidence.
I don't mind a big hunky lens on my camera, in fact I rather like it, (call me superficial) but I can't afford the Nikon fast zooms and I truly feel the quality in Pentax can't be beat. Not to mention the value.
Hopefully one day I will get my hands on a Pentax 85 1.4...oh to dream.
Thanks again for being such a great place to hang out and get advice. This is such a knowledgeable forum!

Well I know on mine it does happen more than occasionally. So that's why I'm currently considering another brand. However as I do my googling I'm finding lots of posts on every system I'm considering complaining of focus issues.
Matt, I'm curious to know what made you switch to the k 5? The d700 is on my current maybe this is the one list, cost being the main thing holding me back. How does the k5 stack up to d700 in your opinion?

Do you think it's possible that missing focus occassionally, be it back focus/front focus whatever, is just a problem that can't be avoided with dSlrs? Yes some of it is user error but I know from my own experience there are times when it is not. It's worse on some lenses than others, but again I am starting to think it's just the nature of dslrs.
