Its been ages since i have had the chance to post...but glad to finally be back on board. Here are a few shots from my week....
The first one is in the Yarra Valley, Melboure, Victoria. For those of you that know the area its half way between Healesville and Yarra Glen.. I went for a long walk down the old train track, where devastating fires went through earlier this year.
The second one is in Healesville... an abandoned station platform.

I have been saving to purchase a telephoto zoom len, and wanted to see what everyone thought was the best options on the market at the moment. It will be a once off purchase, so I want to make sure that I am buying the right one.
I have a K20D and am looking for something like a Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 MACRO HSM. Is this the best option? Do Pentax actually have one at the moment? It will be replacing an old one I bought about ten years ago (Vitacon 100-300 1:5.6-6.7) - i just find its not fast enough!
I actually don't even know much about the HSM technology - so any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

It's been a while since I have posted - but still been busy with my camera. :)
Peter - I love your photos - especially the first one!
Dave - The falcon is great!! Wish I had more fly around my place - I would photograph them for sure!
One of the things that I have been practising is my portrait photography! Here are a select few from the last week.

It's great to see so many well wishes on the site. I live within 10- 20 mins of the affected areas. I have friends that are currently fighting the fire, others that have evacuated their homes, and others that have lost everything. Currently the death toll is 173 and rising. Its a sad week for Victorians. Thanks to everyone that has made donations and sent well wishes. It's greatly appreciated.

Back from a weekend camping! Spent plenty of hours crawling through the Aussie bush chasing little critters. I had a ball!!
Peter thanks for the suggested exercise and the link - I will definately give that a go! Thanks for the suggestion too on using the manual focus - I didn't even think of giving that a go - I was playing mainly with the aperture and shutter speed.. I found it hard enough to get close enough and take a picture before the bugs flew off. But I will try that on some more stationary objects and play.
Haha - I can relate to this - I was exhausted after chasing dragonflies all afternoon, not too mention extremely muddy... but to get one shot can be rewarding!! Mike thanks too for the example of the leaf!!
Marc - thanks for your useful comments :)
Steve - thanks for your comments - I appreciate your input and good to get feedback on my new lens purchase.
eGordon99 - yeap definately need to use manual focus!!
Sean - I discovered this on the weekend too!!
I love your beautiful photo of the bee!! Great work!!
Well after a few days away.. here was my attempt at macro photography.... I know I have a long way to go - but I was happy with these images. After seeing clee01's spider - when I saw one on my friends tent - I just had to try and get a shot.... the rest of the time I spent chasing dragonflies through the marsh.
Thanks again to everyone for your comments - I really appreciate it!

Wow - thanks for the super fast responses, much appreciated.
My query was more around magnification of objects rather than how close I can get to them. I completely understand that photographying insects and the like will require a lot of patience. I am finding that when I find the distance where my lens is in focus it is less than 1:1 ratio that the lens is capable of and the object is a lot smaller. Is this because my aperture setting is incorrect?
I am not familar with extension tubes - I take it they are used between the camera body and the lens? Although after reading additional comments above, perhaps these will not suit either.
Perghaps I have yet to see what the lens is capable off..... I suppose I just love those really close up (magnified) shots of insects - a bit like your spider Clee01!
Sorry for the silly questions - have lots of learning to do!!
Am off camping for the weekend - to see what things I can find in the bush.:D

Hi all,
Am a newbie when it comes to photography and have just recently purchased a macro lens (Sigma 50mm F2.8) to go with my K20D. I have wanted a macro lens for over tens years and decided to take the plunge! Am very excited!
I have been busy taking photos in my garden of various flower and bug shots - however I am disappointed that I am not able to get as close as what I had hoped. How do you create those super close macro shots (like seeing close up bug eyes or caterpillars)? Am I doing something wrong or are macro filters added to the macro lens? Your comments would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks all,
HeyMissJo :D

Hi All,
Can't tell you how excited I am to have found this forum!! I am a beginner photographer, but have always loved snapping away with my camera since I was a kid. Many years ago I bought my first SLR - Pentax MZ50 and I loved it. But over the years I have got lazy with a compact digital.
But you know what? I missed the thrill of composing my own photos and playing around with an SLR - so I have finally done it - I have just bought a Pentax K20D (I couldn't go away from my pentax). I am extremely rusty... but am loving my new camera!
Can't believe how much information is available here!! Am also keen to have a go at some competitions.. although a little nervous - there is some amazing work on this site!! But it's all about having a go! :D
Cheers
Jo
