Beginning to make the switch... to Canon R6

Thanks for the response! I agree with what you said, about the R6 vs R5. The dial on the top + SD cards (vs CF-express, since I already have a stable of SD-I cards) was one of the main draws, aside from price. I have enjoyed using it for the past 1.5 months (or so). I was wondering what kinds of lenses you have/had?? Just curious, as I'm trying to figure out how best to proceed (I realize this is a bit individual).

I started with the kit 24-105 4 - 7.1 (came with my camera), and then recently picked up the 50 1.8 STM to begin to explore low-light capabilities. I am now currently in the process of seeing if they can convert my Sigma 35 1.4 Art into EF. My hope is to begin to possibly think about expanding into other focal ranges. Since I plan on keeping my Pentax K-1 and lenses for landscape/Macro/Astro (things that are slower and/or where more detail might be helpful)... I'm trying to figure out if I think that EF (which at the moment appear almost 1/2 price) or RF. It's been two years since the RF-mount was introduced, and we still haven't seen any Tamron support. Not sure how much sense that makes to hold out. I also do agree with the idea/statement that MP-count is overrated... but does allow for more cropping.

What is CPS? Is that their repair/insurance program that they have or something else?

Hello, [this is a lot longer than I wanted, feel free to skip that part in the middle]

What this thread has somewhat de-volved into is also slightly why I was hesitant to post this kind of thing. I find it funny that some wonder if there is some kind of 'conspiracy' or if I am somehow trolling... even though I posted links to videos of results from using the camera over multiple years. Here are some more, if you don't believe: Father's Uplift (an amazing local mentoring group to children without father's, and for fathers who hope to reconnect with their kids... granted I did not take pic/video from the first half. You have to fast-forward to 4:36 as the video is supposed to summarize their experience, and I was only taking pictures at the ceremony): https://youtu.be/NL1yyV2N7yQ; Calculus Project (my education program, which helps PoCs reach Calculus by their Senior year. All of these photos are from 2015, and shot on my K-5):

Youtu.be

.

Not that someone should, but you can look at my post history, and you'll see posts dating all the way back to when I first got my K-5 as the first digital camera and big purchase (at the time for me) coming out of college and heard about this forum (and when I considered selling my APS-C kit in 2016 when I first got the K-1, which I eventually just gave to a needy family who has never had a camera of any kind that I work with, a very common occurrence... love that kit!!)... no conspiracy, unless it's some kind mandela effect thing.

For those wondering about the switch... As I have told students, I think most cameras made in the past 6-7 years can be a capable camera and used in certain instance. To respond to some confusion in my original post, by c.a.m: [A couple of statements in the member's post are confusing to me, for example: "The only real way to control things was to switch to single-point, which due to shooting at 2.8 (only while in-doors) made cropping blurry when AF was not quite where you wanted it." I can understand general out-of-focus blurriness, but it seems that the OP might be confounding the single-point focus mode and aperture/depth of field. Or, it might be a question of misfocusing with the focus-and-recompose technique. I'm probably misunderstanding the issue here]. What I was trying to describe here, was how I was not able to feel truly in-control when it comes to capturing a specific moment. Ex: basketball player is driving, and you want to capture the moment they run into someone or make the move at the basket... at that exact moment. Because of the 4fps, I always felt that I couldn't get a feel for the time interval... and the moment captured was more so at the whim of whatever that rate is, as apposed to knowing the moment that is coming up + being able to match that moment to a captured time. In terms of the single-point portion. I used to try and shoot by just letting the camera just AF using all of its points (sometimes it's better, sometimes not as it wouldn't always choose what I wanted)... but sometimes I found that the best way to focus to let that center-point be what its focusing on (the same way one might in a portrait over the eye). It helped give me a little bit more control. The 2.8 depth of field sometimes meant that sometimes where it missed the focus, as I feel the continuous-AF doesn't quite track leading to an individual leaving the initial DoF. Maybe this doesn't explain that scenario, but hopefully this helps explain a little bit.

[Skip, if triggering]
In terms of user-error or skill... I will never claim to be the most skilled photographer ever! There are features that I have barely even really taken advantage of (ex: Pixelshift/Astrotracer... though I hope to change this, and do this more... starting with the Upcoming Feb 13 Conjunction. Still need to find a good locale in my area :shameless plug:). I am simply a person who loves to capture moments, and introduce students and individuals to a practice that I love so very much. As I said in the initial post, I love Pentax!! It has been in my life since I was young child, when an estate box randomly showed up to my community center with a K1000 inside of it. I used to love to go around our neighborhood, a bad part of town where people said had a bad reputation, and try to capture its beauty. I talk to students about brand loyalty, and how sometimes that can lead a photographer down a path (though I realize that apparently some people have views on what a 'photographer' is or photography is). I don't think its unreasonable to hope that the only brand of camera that I've ever known in which I have personal sentiment, in this case Pentax, be able to handle these moments (most specifically: sports/wildlife/video... though video less so). And while I don't believe that a camera that shoots 4fps/7fps is suited for this goal, I also do lament that Pentax simply hasn't really kept up with progression of tech. Not blaming the camera or company... just in these realms, I feel something else might meet said need better... for me. Yes, this is my view, and I love the fact that these cameras have met the needs of people here. Myself included (if you remember, my brother's wife had a K-01, my sister a KP... all due to the amazing value! that I helped convince).

I did not hope to bash anything (as I've tried to demonstrate, just how much Pentax has allowed me. Look at my post-history and you'll see my posts about how much I love them, and some of the problems I've had with using them too. Was doing some Macro just a month or so ago), but instead simply give an honest account of a decision for those who might be in my same situation or thought process. And/or see if there are some in the community that has made a similar switch? I feel a lot of Pentax shooters use multiple brands. Its true that I have felt that Pentax tech has been slow to realize, but more importantly Pentax support has been somewhat lacking from 3rd-party. Why not wait for K-3iii?, because at the price of that new camera it feels close to what a new body might be from a different brand... at the cost of having to start new. That is just where I happen to be! and was trying to share my experience... in the Non-Pentax part of this forum. Where I thought this kind of thing is supposed to be... with my thought-process included. I don't think sharing that is bashing. Not to bring John Bloomfield into this, but his video very much captured how I have felt, and I don't think he is bashing it:

Youtu.be

[End]

I want to thank those who have given lens recommendations!! I don't really know that much about Canon-glass, aside from the reputation that goes with it. Considering the 3rd-party support, there feels like there is a sea of options. I jumped at it, due to getting a really great ebay price R6 + 24-105 4-7.1 = @$2400 w/tax. It reminded me, of when I got my K-1 and had to basically build an entirely new lens kit again... starting with the DFA 24-105. Seemed fitting. In terms of investment, I don't really buy lenses like that, where you just buy them all at once. I just add them here and there until I fill out the focal range I want. I know that my next purchase will be the 50 STM 1.8. Though not the top IQ, from the reviews I've seen, it is well worth the $200 or so that it costs (the fact that my current Pentax doesn't have a 50mm is also a plus). Even if I upgrade, it feels no-brainer as it would allow me to experiment with some of the faster aperture capabilities. I want to get a K to RF adapter, if that's possible to transfer over some lenses with MF. After that, I plan to convert my Sigma 35 1.4 Art from K-Mount to EF, and get the adapter. Not sure if anyone has thoughts on if the control ring is worth it? I figured by then, after playing around with the 24-105 focal range, I'll have a better idea of what I want next. EF vs RF. I know that I want something Telephoto, so thank you @surfar for those suggestions. As someone who shoots portraits, I want to get something that will allow me to utilize that eye-AF a little more. Been looking at the AF-Rokinon 85 1.4. I don't know where things will take me after that. As I said, that I plan on keeping my Pentax gear for the more slow times... and I feel pretty good about using my Pentax stuff for Wide-Angle moments. I keep going back and forth about the 35 1.4 convert because I really like it on my K-1 for Astro. Or maybe, like J. Bloomfield states in his video, I might realize that I don't really need all of those different lenses (probably will want something tele though).

Sadly, I haven't really gotten that much opportunities to really test this camera (or really shoot with anything really). Moreso due to my own reluctance to go outside my own apartment really. I have a family downstairs that I interact with heavily throughout the week, and if I get sick, they're bound to get sick too As a teacher, we're pretty close to having our turn come up, so I'm trying to be smart. Learning that my apartment has not really been a locale for my photography... motivation to change. Things will pick up soon though. Kind of funny, that my school is apparently planning on running every sport/event over a 2-3 month span, starting in March or so. [fall/winter/spring all together] Looking forward to seeing how things go then... report back with photos and such, for those who might be interested.

Beginning to make the switch... to Canon R6

I was heavily considering Sony! My first feeling was to move to Nikon (as I once believed that Nikon was the company I would have chosen, if I had to do it all over again... I really liked their d500/750/850). Right now the Z6 can be had at keh for $1,100 and I think that's probably the best value proposition on the used market... especially when you think about how similar it is to the Z6ii. (for the price of one R6, you can buy 2 Z6s, or get some pretty high-end lenses) But after the mark2s were so incremental, and the news of how much they are cutting back on their R+D... while more advanced than Pentax, I feel like I've heard this story before.

I did almost choose Sony. I really like all of their features (I seriously don't think they're going to just let Canon take the lead!), and they already have the lens lineup and 3rd party support. I really like their 3-wheel interface (the fact that their wheel spins... and can also be used like a d-pad is pretty cool... or at least I think it can? on my a6000 anyways, before I gave that away to brother's wife)! However, I recently gave away my Panasonic G85 setup to a student, so I wanted something I could use for video... so I liked the flip-out screen of Canon. I know that the upcoming a7iv is supposed to have a flip-out screen + 30MP... but what really sold it, was how each one felt in the hand. Ergonomics is truly what made the Pentax experience! I've never had a camera that made me want to take that next picture (and have it feel that way with every camera, except 2: K-01 + KP). When I held the Sony, it reminded me of the same weird feeling I got when I held the Panasonic (and kind of with the KP, I got for my sister who loves it!)... and that's its small size or maybe it was just where the buttons were. It just felt weird; mind you it was an a7iii they let me use. And then the fact that Canon continues to be top-5 in patent register for the past 35-years made me feel like they're going to keep innovating into, and eventually get the lens support. I just had to get over the fact that 20MP would be enough. Not having something to shoot really (no events yet) makes me hoping to find something to see if I find a limitation during cropping. At the moment, it isn't doing anything to limit my Portrait and street uses. Haven't tried Macro/Landscape at all.

This really was/has been a really hard decision for me to make. I love my Pentax gear so so so much!!! From the k1000 (my first camera I had at age 13), to my p30 and ZX-7 in High School + College... to move on to the K-5, K-1, K-3 (I know, I got this after getting the K-1 because I wanted a 2nd body and got an amazing deal) in my adulthood. A Pentax really has always been a part of my life, and experiences.

I also really love my lens line-up, and about 2 years ago or so felt like it was finally complete!:
Sigma EX DG 17-35 2.8-4, Sigma 35 1.4 Art, Tamron 90 2.8 macro, DFA 24-105 kit, DFA 24-70 2.8, Sigma 70-200 HSM II, Irix 135 2.8 Macro, Lensbaby Optic 12mm Fisheye + 50mm

Normally I like to shoot events for my school, and take portraits of my students (and for media use at my education program)... normally with a K-3 + 70-200 and K-1 + 24-70 on double-hoslter... and it can definitely work (for reference: Basketball -

Youtu.be

, Football -

Youtu.be

). I think the 36MP is the sweet spot in terms of resolution, and the dynamic range gives a level of flexibility to a moment. In moments where subjects had moments of static, you could truly create amazing moments. However, you were always at the whim of the cameras AF which really hurt in some really important ways. The slow 4 FPS (and even 7 fps) really made it difficult to anticipate what exact moment you were going to capture the shot, and the extreme shallow buffer made shooting RAW practically impossible (the K-3 was a little different). The only real way to control things was to switch to single-point, which due to shooting at 2.8 (only while in-doors) made cropping blurry when AF was not quite where you wanted it. I don't do a lot of it at events, but sometimes its nice to innersperce video clips into highlights. Pentax is easily the most clunky.

I had hopes that some day that Pentax would come out with something that would make me believe that they would address the need for AF/Buffer progression (never really thought video would ever be a priority, which I was fine with). However, after the K-3iii specs, and then the 'possible' price of an APS-C camera (with delay). If this cycle of Tech follows the K-3/K-1/KP/K-70 line, then Pentax simply I feel I have to move on.

So... I decided to move on to the Canon R6. I've only had it for a brief period of time, but the capabilities of this cameras feels like jumping into time portal... and moving decades in advanced. From the AF (the eye-AF is truly game-changing), to the crazy FPS + Buffer (and how fast it clears), to the amazing touch interface (It works with pretty much everything! ex: pinch to zoom. Using the back screen like a joystick to move the AF point while still looking through the viewfinder is a change in interface that might be difficult not to have on other cameras). There's also something nice about shooting silent (you can make it so that you don't even know it took a picture). The video features, shooting 4k-60 and AF in video... to even the menus. The RF lenses have these control-rings that allows a 4th way to change a plethora of features. The customizability is also limitless. The IBIS (AF and video capabilities) is the reason that I went all the way up to this specific model. It claims 8-stops, and I'm not sure if that's exactly what I'm getting... but working with the lens IS, and it feels really close to that. The low-light capabilities really are something too! I'm not really sure what I would do to improve this camera. It has been great to use!! There's only really 1 thing that is a bit disjarring. I only have the Kit 24-105 4 -7.1 lens atm, and hoping to add the 50 1.8, and converting the Sigma 35 1.4 to Canon EF.

If there's anything that I wished the 20MP R6 had, was more MP. As I said, I feel that 36MP is the sweet spot... so I actually like having both systems, at least for now. Pentax K-1 for slow paced moments (landscapes/astro/Macro) or places where I think the elements might put my camera in danger (though the R6 feels high quality, there is no comparison to rugged peace-of-mind feeling I get from Pentax gear). Maybe its just sentiment... but I do like the idea of always having a Pentax somewhere! I also just really love this forum!! (truly the amount I've learned from this forum, just about photography. I used to joke with people that even if I didn't have a Pentax, I would just act like it to be apart of the forum) Does anyone know if there is a forum like this for other companies?? But I do think I'll eventually move my lens lineup over to Canon as more affordable 3rd party options become available. For now, I'll use the Canon R6 for video, fast-paced, portraits, etc. This R6 just very much feels like the future!!

What software do you use to post process your photos?

For Stills:
Not sure if someone said this already (imagine so)... I use ON1 for all of my Post-process needs. IMO it does everything that a person would need 90% of the time. It is definitely trying to provide all of the functions of LightRoom (can't think of something it doesn't do... aside from maybe lens support - I realize this is a big one), with most of the things you hope for in photoshop (ex: skin treatment, background replacement, object removal). AND the best thing about it, is that it's just one full price (was 40% Black Friday = $60); can normally be found with a bundle that contains every Preset up to that point. And I really think the support they have is amazing too, as they send out free presets regularly. I will say, that I don't really like the way that they implement the preset-LUTs. It's not bad at all, and not sure a better way. I think I just wished that my LR presets would have been nice. I love PS/LR, but hate its subscription service, which is what made me want to switch in the first place. I think ON1 100% does what it claims!!

I have the 2018 version, and was considering upgrading to pair with their video software... but

For Video:
Prior to, I was just using Adobe Premiere Elements, which is nice for beginners, but ultimately it feels somewhat limiting and not so streamlined to navigate features. Last year ON1 announced that they were going to release a Video Editing program during 2020. I imagine the world has changed this though, as the mention isn't anywhere. I was planning on upgrading ON1, as I can only imagine/suspect that you would need the 'newest' to get both programs to play well.

BUT, then after getting frustrated with the Adobe License software while completing a project for an important school presentation/hype assembly (it really should just be as easy as typing in the product key in order to install on new computer... but no!)... I needed something right then. That's when I found DaVinci!! I thought premiere elements had features, but after using DaVinci since the start of the school year. I can say that this program is massively better than elements (it truly makes elements feel like old technology), and probably gives most of the features people want. The fact that it is 100% is pretty cool too!

Setting in Camera Preventing me from taking a Picture??

Hello,

This has been a problem that I've had with my K-1 (it might happen with my K-3/5, but I just don't remember it happening)... and I cannot find the setting that makes this happen. Thought I would try here.

Problem:

While the camera is in AF (the physical switch on camera), the camera will not allow you to take a picture unless something in the frame is 'in-focus'. So that if it is blurry in any way, you can press the shutter button, and the camera will not respond. But if you were to manually focus until something is 'in-focus' (red-lights flash and all, if enabled), then it does allow. Sometimes however, even when (I think things are) in focus it won't take the picture. That's when it is truly annoying. And this situation also occurs sometimes with AF-lenses too, during moments where my AF can't find (or thinks it isn't in focus). If I switch the physical switch to MF, the camera is allowed to fire whenever I want, and the problem goes away.

I was just wondering what setting is stopping this? And/or if there was a way to over-ride this function... so that I can take a blurry photo, if I wanted to.

Hope this makes sense?

This is an amazing companion for something like a K-1!! It's very robust, and just fits the feel of the camera. It's a good alternative to speed-lights, especially for moments where you want something a little more compact. It does takes some time to get used to the power in terms of light control. It is very powerful!!

I can't give any voice to either of the DFA 70-200 2.8 or the 70-210 4.0, but they do look like absolute tanks. Having the WR is probably nice too though. Once when shooting a Lacrosse game, it just poured and poured and poured. It would have been really nice to have it. My Sigma held up pretty well though! I do have experience using both the Tamron 70-200 (before a student's backpack sent it tumbling to its dented death), and my current Sigma 70-200. I really did/do love using both of these, and thought the Image Quality was more than enough, and has left me very satisfied. Both of these lenses can usually be had for $500-600, sometimes less. Though I haven't ever used either, I don't think they provide 2x (70-210) or 3x (70-200) what these lenses can do.

But each of the Tamron and Sigma versions aren't without their quirks. Tamron: This thing feels heavier and due to the AF/MF mechanism/clutch feels the most clunky of them. However, I think that's only perception as I believe its actually the lightest amongst the three. It's not super loud, but you can definitely hear it while it finds focus. I don't know if it has better IQ than the Sigma, but I remember feeling like it found focus faster... and maybe during a fast environment (ex: sports), that's why it seemed slightly better. It is also noticeably bigger than the Sigma. Sigma: The Sigma on the other hand just seems more elegant. Even the look of the lens. It has a HSM inside, it is dead silent! It's pretty nice! One thing to caution, is some (like mine) require you to send the lens into Sigma so that they can update it themselves. Unfortunately, if this is the case, it is the only way. Worse yet, because Sigma stopped supporting Pentax, when you try and set this up they might tell you that they don't perform that service. I had to contact an affiliated Canadian company, who over the process of a month finally arranged for the USA company to do it. It took about 1.5-2 months total to arrange. The good thing though, is that this entire process is free (aside from the shipping cost, they even pay to ship it back to you)... and you get a new mount (its supposed to address the K-1 scratching thing, that I never experienced beforehand). All-in-all, I have nothing bad to say about the DFA lenses. I just can't imagine them being significantly better than what I get out of the Tamron/Sigma offerings, especially not something that can't be dealt with in post (ex: LR or ON1).

In terms of the DFA 24-70 2.8, prior to owning this (got mine on here for $600) I had the Tamron 28-70 2.8 ($150-200). I will say that the Tamron isn't a bad place to start, if you're trying to find something that is 'budget'. It does allow you to get quality pictures, and more importantly allows for you to control light in low-light situations. However, I can say definitively that there is a BIG difference between the DFA-version. It's kind of weird to describe the difference, but with the Tamron (hard to describe), it's almost as if there's a super thin layer over the top. It also doesn't really deal with lens-flare very well. Also with the DFA, you get the WR. With that being said, you do get a lot out of the Tamron for just $150, and I can't think of a zoom lens at 2.8 or lower that can give you this performance. Not a bad place to start, as it was first fast zoom, when my budget was low and allowed for experimentation.

I agree with DearJohn, when he says that the DFA 24-70 isn't really a 'walk-around' lens. I think the 28-105 really is a wonder! and should be included in any FFrame kit. It's just so versatile. With WR, silent focusing, and focus override. So long as you have the light, I feel you get the same (or similar) performance as the DFA 24-70... and at only $350 too! Why I use it the most, even though its one of the less expensive lenses in the FF-kit. It was really the first lens that I got, and because of the wide range, really gave me a good idea of which focal lengths I preferred, in terms of what to get next. I suggest getting this first!

For the 35mm Vs 50mm, you have to decide this first I suppose. 50mm is kind of special, because if you've been in APS-C world for so long, you're used to your 50 really performing like a 75-80mm. This is the first time you might be genuinely seeing 50mm, which is different. I strongly would suggest the Sigma 35 1.4. It can be had (on here) for $550 or so, and it truly is an amazing tank of a lens. All of the pictures that come from it, are simply Buttery-smooth! It really is difficult for me to find fault in most pictures that comes from it. I opted for this, instead of getting anything FF in the 50mm range. I will say, that I do still have my DA 50 1.8 ($90), which works with the K-1 without any vignette. I still think that lens is the best value lens that exists. I use that, if I really find that I need 50mm (or the 24-70 @50).

@$1800, I don't know if I can justify that kind of expense. For roughly that amount, you can pretty much have the kit that I have now: DA 50 ($90), Tam 90mm ($175), DFA 24-70 ($600), Sig 70-200 ($550), Sig 35 1.4 ($550), = $1965... then I added Sig 17-35 2.8-4 ($325) = UW, Irix 150 2.8 ($300) = macro, Sig 170-500 5-6.3 ($300) for Super-tele = $2890 total. That's a pretty complete set up IMO.

Suggestion for buying a beginner-to-intermediate Pentax?

I continue to think that the K-3-1st Gen is not only the best entry into Pentax... it might also hold the best value of any camera regardless of brand. It can usually be had for $350-400 US (I got mine used for $275, so sometimes you can find them even cheaper). The main features (that aren't in earlier cameras): AA-simulator, better AF, 2-card slots, 24MP, better ISO performance, 7fps, more rugged parts. As much as I loved my old K-5, the jump in features is pretty substantial for the price. At 24MP, it also gives the same IQuality (assuming ideal conditions in terms of lighting) as their most recent cameras (KP/K-70), so you're not really missing out on things. It does lack Pixel-shift and/or Astro, but there hasn't really been a huge advance since this camera IMO. If you were to ever upgrade at any point, it will still have value as a 2nd-option too. I still use it a lot even though I have K-1, due to it having a higher fps/buffer + the 1.5x crop can come in handy.

I think my favorite thing about the video as a whole, is the respectful nature (and this might be more of a cultural thing, that you are exposed to for those who have ever taken Japanese)... There's the point at the very end 24:47 where they are signing off, and they go from relaxed to a formal posture... not because anyone told them to, but instead because it is simply their way and process. It feels very much like Pentax and leadership to be this way. Seems appropriate with the cameras that they come out with, and how they release products. Like many have said (in this video, and the previous one), its rare to see the inner-workings of decisions explained. I think more companies should adopt this approach!

As for me, there were some really good take-aways. The Pentaprism portion doesn't really move the needle, nor does the ISO-IQ improvements too. It feels like very incremental improvements. I'm glad that they're there! But nothing announced so far has made me feel like my K-1/K-3 combination needs an upgrade, or is a notable enough one. One of the most impressive things, is what they have been able to cram into that small amount of space. When I purchased a KP for brother's wife, I continue to be blown away that they packed so so much into a camera so small! People say that one of the main advantage for Mirrorless is size... but the KP is about the same size as my G85/GH5. The fact that it has 2-card slots packed into there is an engineering marvel! It'll be interesting to see what else they happen to jam-pack in there!!

If past is prologue... then I'm guessing wifi will be there, some kind of 3rd wheel (still wondering about the 4th wheel + left mystery button?), and Pixel-Shift/AA-simulator/horizon correction is here to stay. I can really take it or leave Touch-screen capabilities. But if it's not there, why would they need the sensor? I also don't care too much about MegaPixels at this point (24MPs really is enough now) and I feel Pentax does not lack for dynamic range at all. I will say that my time with K-1 has spoiled me a bit with the articulation. Comes in clutch when shooting above a crowd/sports huddle, and low to the ground. The biggest factor for me is AF, FPS, and Buffer... for sports/wildlife/events. Significant improvement in either of those areas is really the only thing that I think will get me to buy anything new. So far, it feels only a slight improvement. As exciting as this is, it very much is making me feel content with the K-1/K-3 combination!

I really like this product! For $20, you get 12 swabs + cleaner. I purchased it back in 2018, and I still have 7 of them. It's perfectly cut to fit the full-frame sensor (they have other sizes too), and its perfectly cleaned it each time. Works for my K-1i anyways. It's a pretty good deal!

Haha... I definitely would just get acclimated to the extremely perfect ergonomics, especially if its your first Digital Camera or ILC. That Green button was such a gamechanger in terms of having me embrace the other features and freedom to explore manual. I had a K-5, and then jumped up to the K-1 after shooting exclusively with K-5 for 2+ years. But I do believe that the K-3 is truly a great value! and can usually be had between $300-400 (a big range I know, but I got mine for $325 w/grip). The bump in MP to 24, 2-card slot, AA-simulator filter, ISO performance... are really big upgrades for the price, almost to the point where I would say the APS-C offerings since haven't really been that much better. That 2+ years with K-5 really helped to develop my understanding though.

Welcome!

I primarily shoot Pentax... K-1 when I need the detail and have the slow pace to allow. I really think that 36MP is the perfect amount, K-3 when I need a little bit more zoom/punch + fast pace... Both/Double-wield at events (K-1 = close pics, K-3 far)

Film: k1000, p30, ME Super (probably my least favorite Pentax anything ever), Z-5

Previous (given away): K-5, K-01 (Bday gift for sister), KP (for brother's wife)

I'm with Self. Acquired a G85 kind of on a whim, because I wanted something with better Video, while also scratching my EVF itch when I feel like I'm being left behind. It's a pretty amazing camera on its own. The 4k is buttery, although the AF-zooming in video can fluctuate relentlessly. Manual is the way to go. The IBIS is really really good too! It has a fully articulating screen, and its touch too. The 4k-photo mode is kind of a cool gimmick. One thing that is extremely underrated until you have it, is the ability to shoot silently!! During an event, and you have that one person where you can hear that mirror-slap over and over again. If there is one thing that mirrorless 100% has over DSLR, this has to be it! It really does plug most/all of the holes that Pentax isn't. And the entry level lenses are dirt cheap! But since I shoot manual during video, a Pentax adapter is super clutch.

Olympus RIP TG-860: This is my go-to underwater/rugged camera. They have other rugged cameras from other brands too, with slightly better specs. But I think this is the best one simply because it is the only rugged camera that possesses a flip-up screen. There is a kind of 'haze' (not sure how else to describe it, especially when underwater, just re-emerging) over the pictures + 1080p video though, but I don't mind it really.

DJI Mavic Pro: Drone, I don't use it as much as I should... but the footage and capabilities are truly amazing! It's also just really fun to fly. It really does shake up your paradigm, and way of viewing something!

DJI Mobile 3: This only works with a person's phone... but it is quite the gimbal! It has so many cool capabilities. You can track a subject, create panaramas, timelapse, cool transition(s) features. It's the full package. And crazy that it only costs $100. And since it uses your phone, you just need to upgrade your phone, to upgrade the 'camera'. It can replace a lot of things!!

I love street photography and the ability to keep a APS-C capable camera that is pocketable, so a GRIII feels like it might be in the future in the next 2-3 years (even if they come out with a IV, I'll still just pick up the III). But right now that's pretty much it, until the K-New drops. All I really feel like I need/want is something with a higher buffer/fps, and probably do prefer APS-C for the extra 1.5x punch. Be perfect for birding/event. (sadly, that video-conference had me a bit underwhelmed) Give me a FA-teleconverter (that works with other brand lenses too! this one is not really needed though), and I feel I will be set for the foreseeable future!

Previous: Sony a6000...this is truly a do-it-all camera!! I've never seen a camera that can take 11fps pictures before. And the AF is pretty amazing with how wide spread it is! The size is super compact too. It is almost pocketable w/pancake lens. 1080p is top-quality as well, with 24MP photos. It is only really let down by god-awful battery life!!!!!!! (given to sister when she entered college 2-years ago). My father was gifted an Olympus EM-5 II, as part of a Free flight give away if you purchased one 4-5 years ago. Best Deal ever!!! (flight home for holidays, and my father was able to get his 1st digital camera... he used to be an old professional Nikon film shooter before giving it up)

Yes, it does work on the Pentax KP (or any FF or APS-C body)... or I assume that it can. I only have a K-3, so I can only give voice to that for personal use. I will say, that it can be slightly more difficult to keep steady (in comparison to FF), due to the 1.5x extra crop. But it works flawlessly aside from that. Seems reliable and robust! and gives the best IQ that I've seen so far (maybe only my Sigma 35 1.4 Art can challenge)

Hmm... have you looked underneath the Eyepiece?? Is the crack actually the viewfinder? I just checked my K-1 + K-3, and there's a pretty good amount of glass in between. I can imagine that cracking, but if you look underneath (it's okay if you didn't know that you could do that. For the longest time I thought it was just 1-piece. Then when the rubber on the eyepiece started to tear, I looked into replacing it) , maybe the viewfinder glass is okay?

A new Eyepiece isn't that expensive (~$30): o-me-53

I tried to find the option on my phone, and couldn't see the option. You have to scroll down (on computer... maybe it will also work on a tablet?) to see the deal for $21. Then once both items are in your cart, there is a $5 off coupon that you can click to bring the total to 16.99, which comes out to 18.05 total (which is the price of the power bank alone). It will say that the total $40, but it takes it off 18.99 once you go to checkout. Not sure how long the deal will be up for.

Cheers

I would question... is there really something that the Tam 70-200 2.8 or Sig 70-200 2.8 (and other associated focal lengths) don't offer you?? It's true that they no longer support new Pentax mount, but things haven't really changed that much. I've had both the above lenses, and each did everything I imagine wanting it to do. They are both rugged (the Tam maybe a bit more), and if you want silent then the Sigma AF (my current) is whisper level. I've never used the DFA, but I have both the 28-105 + 24-70 and if the 70-200 performs similarly, it doesn't feel like its a noticeable difference. Maybe just the ability to focus-override (that's a legitimate feature when using it with AF, then making a small adjustment to the focus you really want) And then when you factor price (Sig/Tam can be had for roughly $500 vs newer 1.4-7k+ super lenses. It's not 3x as good, if even 1.5x), its punching! I will admit that the Tam 27-75 2.8 isn't as good as the DFA, but for $200 the Tam was well worth it imo, as it gave me the ability to experiment with 2.8 on FF for the first time, while I waited for the DFA price to come down (~$550).

If I feel any limitation in my lens, its in the camera body itself (ex: not having the FPS or Buffer for a situation). But as Serk said, if 'modern' is what you want, that is the situation. I would just say that there doesn't seem to be that big of a difference to me, except in price. When other mounts get new 3rd-support, it is easy to feel like you're getting left behind though so I understand the feeling.

Just updating... that it did in fact come in 2-days ago. It didn't come in the cool blue box that you see with all of the Unboxing on YouTube. It came with the case, two back end-caps, one front-cap, lens hood, tripod mount. As far as condition, it does appear to meet the advertised condition; in Perfect condition. I wouldn't be surprised if it were some kind of hold-over from a kind of 'review-copy' or so. I can truly say that the lens is built like a tank! It's heavier than any other lens, including my 70-200... almost to the point where its easy for me to feel fatigue just from using it. Maybe, it's also a combination of the needing to use my hand not only to hold the camera+lens, but also needed to use the manual-focus. The Manual Focus feels really nice, and I fully support all manual lenses have that little bump for guidance. The rubber is super squishy-comfortable, but you definitely miss if the little bump isn't felt. 270* is a really long focus throw... and in terms of use, it takes me some serious time to figure out what direction to rotate the barrel to get the focus you want. I have a Tam 90, but I don't remember it's focus being so sensitive, in terms of getting in focus what you want... BUT I don't think I've ever felt so much control, and it might be that its giving a new understanding of DoField. You can really feel it move over your field of view. I also really do love having all of the info on the barrel. I've never really fully understood how or when the 1:x came into play until now (or I'm starting to). The last thing I'll say is Holy Focus Breathing! As you turn the barrel to find your focus, look again and somehow the object has moved slightly closer/further away.

All-in-all, its been a fun couple of days playing with it as a Macro-lens. I imagine as I use it more, I'll get more used to which direction the barrel needs to turn to get the focus I want, and the Focus Breathing really isn't that big of a deal. It's a rugged lens, with superb IQ (might be the best lens that I have, which is saying something!)... for $300, no complaints at all. Makes my K-1 sing! Maybe I'll post some pictures, once I take this thing outside. I don't feel like I need to add any lens to my lineup, as it feels pretty complete now!! (I would like a super telephoto of some kind... hoping for that new teleconverter to extend my Sig 70-200 into 140-400 to help with when I shoot sports + birding)

I very much do! As a teacher it's essential to have a printer at home in general, and then I like to have a printer that can also double for Printing Photos. Some people have mentioned cost, and I think its very much relative to the size that you are trying to print. For those interested in a really cost-effective option, I really like the HP Envy 7855, which can be had for roughly $99. This printer does a great job of printing, scanning, etc... and while I do think the quality isn't as good as a Canon Pixma Pro ($400), it does punch above in terms of quality. I also want to 1) emphasize the use of Photo Paper! as when I was first printing to just normal paper, I was very much underwhelmed by the quality of the photos. Switch to printer paper... Bam, Big difference! (just don't be stupid like me and forget to switch out your paper when doing teacher-stuff, AND 2) signing up for an HP-ink plan. This is the specific reason I chose this printer, because of this feature. The HP ink plans make it so that you don't have to pay for ink. When you are about to run out, they just send you a batch of ink in the mail... and this happens automatically without the need to contact someone specifically. The plans per month are $2.99-50 page limit (what I use, for this specific one, $36/yr), 4.99-100 page limit, 9.99-300pg, 14.99-500pg, 19.99-700pg (what I have for my printer at school, since a lot fo students use it, and another teacher+her students). Any extra pages roll-over too. That seems like a pretty good deal imo!

The only real drawback, to me, is if you're trying to print something that is bigger than 8.5 x 14" (legal-wide) or A4. You do have to have them professionally done for any canvas-type things (your pictures look pretty cool, and I haven't seen a place that turns photos into a paint by numbers???) or photo-books. It fits most of my needs though (normally just decorating walls with photos in frames), at a fraction of a cost.

I was more referring to what Barney/zapp said (on page 1) who suggested waiting for details on the next APS-C camera, prior to acquiring something new. Based off the camera bodies the OP says they have, that feels like good advice. The idea that the advantages to FF are more negligible now with more modern cameras, and might be even moreso with this upcoming new advancement, before OP begins to go down the road of investing in a bigger sensor (and the changes that come with that). As someone who likes to double-wield K-1/K-3, I would ride a K-3 out since the successor is actually a reality.

I think most people have said what I agree is best... to wait until this new camera comes out. It looks quite the jump in technology! and we hope that it will be well worth the full-price. However, I think the way that Pentax appears to release cameras, is the first camera represents a big leap in tech (I think this feels like the significant leap felt from the K-5 to K-3, maybe even moreso)... and then they just funnel that tech to their 'budget' (ex: k-70), 'full-frame' (k-1), and then 'misc' (kp). Whenever someone asks me which type of (Pentax specifically) camera they should buy, I almost always start them out with the K-3. Are the improvements from the K-3ii, k-70, k-1, kp... really that different in terms of IQ? In some ways yes, but only incrementally and FF being what it is.

Having both a K-3 and K-1 (I actually picked up the K-3 afterwards) I can tell you that there is a pretty big bump up in IQ, as well as situations where you really feel the improvements play themselves out. There's the obvious 36MP jump up, which really any APS-C really can't overcome that part, and Pixelshift shouldn't be understated (I think the 3rd wheel is pretty big in terms of handling too)... but then there's the low-light performance where it truly shines. There are circumstances where the K-1 can take clear and 100% useable photos to the point where you'd never know that it was taken when it was. The dynamic range is impressive, but so is the way for it to manage noise as well. I always point to this video, when I reflect on the amazing range it has (3min):

Youtu.be

However, there are places/circumstances where even the old K-3 has a big advantage over the K-1. The only real shortcoming in the K-1 imo, is the RAW buffer and 4fps. The K-1 will fill up after a handful of pictures, while the K-3 will shoot RAW photos for days and at 7fps. You really feel it during moments that are fast-paced like sports or events (I take pictures for my school sometimes) Also, you do miss the 1.5 crop factor in some instances. Using the K-1 you do have to re-adjust to taking that step back, but moving back to APS-C and its basically like putting a teleconverter on your FF-lenses. Also, one thing I didn't consider at the time that I made the jump, is that I would have to basically replace all of my lenses. It is shooting with the K-3 that has convinced me that there is value in having both. APS-C for events and speed (that 1.5 reach really comes in handy!), FF for when you need the added detail.

A lot of times I find that most DA/APS-C lenses can actually still 100% be used in 1:1-mode, which gives ~24mps. That's pretty useful!

I think you should just wait though, as many of the advantages in low-light are pretty negligible now with the new cameras. I got a KP for my sister-in-law, and sometimes I envy at it's low-light ability, and the newer cameras have Pixel-shift too. I think you should wait for this next APS-C camera. We've seen it, so it seems like its pretty far along. My guess is that Full-frame with similar tech will come right after that. It would suck to buy a K-1 now, and then the FF come out 2-4 years from now with the vastly new tech. Then if you still wanted to go with the K-1, it be cheaper... but in the meantime new APS-C would mean not having to worry about lenses too. Sadly, with the state of the world, this timeline might shift a bit in terms of waiting.
