Beginning to make the switch... to Canon R6

Hello, [this is a lot longer than I wanted, feel free to skip that part in the middle]

What this thread has somewhat de-volved into is also slightly why I was hesitant to post this kind of thing. I find it funny that some wonder if there is some kind of 'conspiracy' or if I am somehow trolling... even though I posted links to videos of results from using the camera over multiple years. Here are some more, if you don't believe: Father's Uplift (an amazing local mentoring group to children without father's, and for fathers who hope to reconnect with their kids... granted I did not take pic/video from the first half. You have to fast-forward to 4:36 as the video is supposed to summarize their experience, and I was only taking pictures at the ceremony): https://youtu.be/NL1yyV2N7yQ; Calculus Project (my education program, which helps PoCs reach Calculus by their Senior year. All of these photos are from 2015, and shot on my K-5):

.

Not that someone should, but you can look at my post history, and you'll see posts dating all the way back to when I first got my K-5 as the first digital camera and big purchase (at the time for me) coming out of college and heard about this forum (and when I considered selling my APS-C kit in 2016 when I first got the K-1, which I eventually just gave to a needy family who has never had a camera of any kind that I work with, a very common occurrence... love that kit!!)... no conspiracy, unless it's some kind mandela effect thing.

For those wondering about the switch... As I have told students, I think most cameras made in the past 6-7 years can be a capable camera and used in certain instance. To respond to some confusion in my original post, by c.a.m: [A couple of statements in the member's post are confusing to me, for example: "The only real way to control things was to switch to single-point, which due to shooting at 2.8 (only while in-doors) made cropping blurry when AF was not quite where you wanted it." I can understand general out-of-focus blurriness, but it seems that the OP might be confounding the single-point focus mode and aperture/depth of field. Or, it might be a question of misfocusing with the focus-and-recompose technique. I'm probably misunderstanding the issue here]. What I was trying to describe here, was how I was not able to feel truly in-control when it comes to capturing a specific moment. Ex: basketball player is driving, and you want to capture the moment they run into someone or make the move at the basket... at that exact moment. Because of the 4fps, I always felt that I couldn't get a feel for the time interval... and the moment captured was more so at the whim of whatever that rate is, as apposed to knowing the moment that is coming up + being able to match that moment to a captured time. In terms of the single-point portion. I used to try and shoot by just letting the camera just AF using all of its points (sometimes it's better, sometimes not as it wouldn't always choose what I wanted)... but sometimes I found that the best way to focus to let that center-point be what its focusing on (the same way one might in a portrait over the eye). It helped give me a little bit more control. The 2.8 depth of field sometimes meant that sometimes where it missed the focus, as I feel the continuous-AF doesn't quite track leading to an individual leaving the initial DoF. Maybe this doesn't explain that scenario, but hopefully this helps explain a little bit.

[Skip, if triggering]
In terms of user-error or skill... I will never claim to be the most skilled photographer ever! There are features that I have barely even really taken advantage of (ex: Pixelshift/Astrotracer... though I hope to change this, and do this more... starting with the Upcoming Feb 13 Conjunction. Still need to find a good locale in my area :shameless plug:). I am simply a person who loves to capture moments, and introduce students and individuals to a practice that I love so very much. As I said in the initial post, I love Pentax!! It has been in my life since I was young child, when an estate box randomly showed up to my community center with a K1000 inside of it. I used to love to go around our neighborhood, a bad part of town where people said had a bad reputation, and try to capture its beauty. I talk to students about brand loyalty, and how sometimes that can lead a photographer down a path (though I realize that apparently some people have views on what a 'photographer' is or photography is). I don't think its unreasonable to hope that the only brand of camera that I've ever known in which I have personal sentiment, in this case Pentax, be able to handle these moments (most specifically: sports/wildlife/video... though video less so). And while I don't believe that a camera that shoots 4fps/7fps is suited for this goal, I also do lament that Pentax simply hasn't really kept up with progression of tech. Not blaming the camera or company... just in these realms, I feel something else might meet said need better... for me. Yes, this is my view, and I love the fact that these cameras have met the needs of people here. Myself included (if you remember, my brother's wife had a K-01, my sister a KP... all due to the amazing value! that I helped convince).

I did not hope to bash anything (as I've tried to demonstrate, just how much Pentax has allowed me. Look at my post-history and you'll see my posts about how much I love them, and some of the problems I've had with using them too. Was doing some Macro just a month or so ago), but instead simply give an honest account of a decision for those who might be in my same situation or thought process. And/or see if there are some in the community that has made a similar switch? I feel a lot of Pentax shooters use multiple brands. Its true that I have felt that Pentax tech has been slow to realize, but more importantly Pentax support has been somewhat lacking from 3rd-party. Why not wait for K-3iii?, because at the price of that new camera it feels close to what a new body might be from a different brand... at the cost of having to start new. That is just where I happen to be! and was trying to share my experience... in the Non-Pentax part of this forum. Where I thought this kind of thing is supposed to be... with my thought-process included. I don't think sharing that is bashing. Not to bring John Bloomfield into this, but his video very much captured how I have felt, and I don't think he is bashing it:

[End]

I want to thank those who have given lens recommendations!! I don't really know that much about Canon-glass, aside from the reputation that goes with it. Considering the 3rd-party support, there feels like there is a sea of options. I jumped at it, due to getting a really great ebay price R6 + 24-105 4-7.1 = @$2400 w/tax. It reminded me, of when I got my K-1 and had to basically build an entirely new lens kit again... starting with the DFA 24-105. Seemed fitting. In terms of investment, I don't really buy lenses like that, where you just buy them all at once. I just add them here and there until I fill out the focal range I want. I know that my next purchase will be the 50 STM 1.8. Though not the top IQ, from the reviews I've seen, it is well worth the $200 or so that it costs (the fact that my current Pentax doesn't have a 50mm is also a plus). Even if I upgrade, it feels no-brainer as it would allow me to experiment with some of the faster aperture capabilities. I want to get a K to RF adapter, if that's possible to transfer over some lenses with MF. After that, I plan to convert my Sigma 35 1.4 Art from K-Mount to EF, and get the adapter. Not sure if anyone has thoughts on if the control ring is worth it? I figured by then, after playing around with the 24-105 focal range, I'll have a better idea of what I want next. EF vs RF. I know that I want something Telephoto, so thank you @surfar for those suggestions. As someone who shoots portraits, I want to get something that will allow me to utilize that eye-AF a little more. Been looking at the AF-Rokinon 85 1.4. I don't know where things will take me after that. As I said, that I plan on keeping my Pentax gear for the more slow times... and I feel pretty good about using my Pentax stuff for Wide-Angle moments. I keep going back and forth about the 35 1.4 convert because I really like it on my K-1 for Astro. Or maybe, like J. Bloomfield states in his video, I might realize that I don't really need all of those different lenses (probably will want something tele though).

Sadly, I haven't really gotten that much opportunities to really test this camera (or really shoot with anything really). Moreso due to my own reluctance to go outside my own apartment really. I have a family downstairs that I interact with heavily throughout the week, and if I get sick, they're bound to get sick too As a teacher, we're pretty close to having our turn come up, so I'm trying to be smart. Learning that my apartment has not really been a locale for my photography... motivation to change. Things will pick up soon though. Kind of funny, that my school is apparently planning on running every sport/event over a 2-3 month span, starting in March or so. [fall/winter/spring all together] Looking forward to seeing how things go then... report back with photos and such, for those who might be interested.

This really was/has been a really hard decision for me to make. I love my Pentax gear so so so much!!! From the k1000 (my first camera I had at age 13), to my p30 and ZX-7 in High School + College... to move on to the K-5, K-1, K-3 (I know, I got this after getting the K-1 because I wanted a 2nd body and got an amazing deal) in my adulthood. A Pentax really has always been a part of my life, and experiences.

I also really love my lens line-up, and about 2 years ago or so felt like it was finally complete!:
Sigma EX DG 17-35 2.8-4, Sigma 35 1.4 Art, Tamron 90 2.8 macro, DFA 24-105 kit, DFA 24-70 2.8, Sigma 70-200 HSM II, Irix 135 2.8 Macro, Lensbaby Optic 12mm Fisheye + 50mm

Normally I like to shoot events for my school, and take portraits of my students (and for media use at my education program)... normally with a K-3 + 70-200 and K-1 + 24-70 on double-hoslter... and it can definitely work (for reference: Basketball -

). I think the 36MP is the sweet spot in terms of resolution, and the dynamic range gives a level of flexibility to a moment. In moments where subjects had moments of static, you could truly create amazing moments. However, you were always at the whim of the cameras AF which really hurt in some really important ways. The slow 4 FPS (and even 7 fps) really made it difficult to anticipate what exact moment you were going to capture the shot, and the extreme shallow buffer made shooting RAW practically impossible (the K-3 was a little different). The only real way to control things was to switch to single-point, which due to shooting at 2.8 (only while in-doors) made cropping blurry when AF was not quite where you wanted it. I don't do a lot of it at events, but sometimes its nice to innersperce video clips into highlights. Pentax is easily the most clunky.

I had hopes that some day that Pentax would come out with something that would make me believe that they would address the need for AF/Buffer progression (never really thought video would ever be a priority, which I was fine with). However, after the K-3iii specs, and then the 'possible' price of an APS-C camera (with delay). If this cycle of Tech follows the K-3/K-1/KP/K-70 line, then Pentax simply I feel I have to move on.

So... I decided to move on to the Canon R6. I've only had it for a brief period of time, but the capabilities of this cameras feels like jumping into time portal... and moving decades in advanced. From the AF (the eye-AF is truly game-changing), to the crazy FPS + Buffer (and how fast it clears), to the amazing touch interface (It works with pretty much everything! ex: pinch to zoom. Using the back screen like a joystick to move the AF point while still looking through the viewfinder is a change in interface that might be difficult not to have on other cameras). There's also something nice about shooting silent (you can make it so that you don't even know it took a picture). The video features, shooting 4k-60 and AF in video... to even the menus. The RF lenses have these control-rings that allows a 4th way to change a plethora of features. The customizability is also limitless. The IBIS (AF and video capabilities) is the reason that I went all the way up to this specific model. It claims 8-stops, and I'm not sure if that's exactly what I'm getting... but working with the lens IS, and it feels really close to that. The low-light capabilities really are something too! I'm not really sure what I would do to improve this camera. It has been great to use!! There's only really 1 thing that is a bit disjarring. I only have the Kit 24-105 4 -7.1 lens atm, and hoping to add the 50 1.8, and converting the Sigma 35 1.4 to Canon EF.

If there's anything that I wished the 20MP R6 had, was more MP. As I said, I feel that 36MP is the sweet spot... so I actually like having both systems, at least for now. Pentax K-1 for slow paced moments (landscapes/astro/Macro) or places where I think the elements might put my camera in danger (though the R6 feels high quality, there is no comparison to rugged peace-of-mind feeling I get from Pentax gear). Maybe its just sentiment... but I do like the idea of always having a Pentax somewhere! I also just really love this forum!! (truly the amount I've learned from this forum, just about photography. I used to joke with people that even if I didn't have a Pentax, I would just act like it to be apart of the forum) Does anyone know if there is a forum like this for other companies?? But I do think I'll eventually move my lens lineup over to Canon as more affordable 3rd party options become available. For now, I'll use the Canon R6 for video, fast-paced, portraits, etc. This R6 just very much feels like the future!!

I was heavily considering Sony! My first feeling was to move to Nikon (as I once believed that Nikon was the company I would have chosen, if I had to do it all over again... I really liked their d500/750/850). Right now the Z6 can be had at keh for $1,100 and I think that's probably the best value proposition on the used market... especially when you think about how similar it is to the Z6ii. (for the price of one R6, you can buy 2 Z6s, or get some pretty high-end lenses) But after the mark2s were so incremental, and the news of how much they are cutting back on their R+D... while more advanced than Pentax, I feel like I've heard this story before.

I did almost choose Sony. I really like all of their features (I seriously don't think they're going to just let Canon take the lead!), and they already have the lens lineup and 3rd party support. I really like their 3-wheel interface (the fact that their wheel spins... and can also be used like a d-pad is pretty cool... or at least I think it can? on my a6000 anyways, before I gave that away to brother's wife)! However, I recently gave away my Panasonic G85 setup to a student, so I wanted something I could use for video... so I liked the flip-out screen of Canon. I know that the upcoming a7iv is supposed to have a flip-out screen + 30MP... but what really sold it, was how each one felt in the hand. Ergonomics is truly what made the Pentax experience! I've never had a camera that made me want to take that next picture (and have it feel that way with every camera, except 2: K-01 + KP). When I held the Sony, it reminded me of the same weird feeling I got when I held the Panasonic (and kind of with the KP, I got for my sister who loves it!)... and that's its small size or maybe it was just where the buttons were. It just felt weird; mind you it was an a7iii they let me use. And then the fact that Canon continues to be top-5 in patent register for the past 35-years made me feel like they're going to keep innovating into, and eventually get the lens support. I just had to get over the fact that 20MP would be enough. Not having something to shoot really (no events yet) makes me hoping to find something to see if I find a limitation during cropping. At the moment, it isn't doing anything to limit my Portrait and street uses. Haven't tried Macro/Landscape at all.

Suggestion for buying a beginner-to-intermediate Pentax?

I continue to think that the K-3-1st Gen is not only the best entry into Pentax... it might also hold the best value of any camera regardless of brand. It can usually be had for $350-400 US (I got mine used for $275, so sometimes you can find them even cheaper). The main features (that aren't in earlier cameras): AA-simulator, better AF, 2-card slots, 24MP, better ISO performance, 7fps, more rugged parts. As much as I loved my old K-5, the jump in features is pretty substantial for the price. At 24MP, it also gives the same IQuality (assuming ideal conditions in terms of lighting) as their most recent cameras (KP/K-70), so you're not really missing out on things. It does lack Pixel-shift and/or Astro, but there hasn't really been a huge advance since this camera IMO. If you were to ever upgrade at any point, it will still have value as a 2nd-option too. I still use it a lot even though I have K-1, due to it having a higher fps/buffer + the 1.5x crop can come in handy.

I think my favorite thing about the video as a whole, is the respectful nature (and this might be more of a cultural thing, that you are exposed to for those who have ever taken Japanese)... There's the point at the very end 24:47 where they are signing off, and they go from relaxed to a formal posture... not because anyone told them to, but instead because it is simply their way and process. It feels very much like Pentax and leadership to be this way. Seems appropriate with the cameras that they come out with, and how they release products. Like many have said (in this video, and the previous one), its rare to see the inner-workings of decisions explained. I think more companies should adopt this approach!

As for me, there were some really good take-aways. The Pentaprism portion doesn't really move the needle, nor does the ISO-IQ improvements too. It feels like very incremental improvements. I'm glad that they're there! But nothing announced so far has made me feel like my K-1/K-3 combination needs an upgrade, or is a notable enough one. One of the most impressive things, is what they have been able to cram into that small amount of space. When I purchased a KP for brother's wife, I continue to be blown away that they packed so so much into a camera so small! People say that one of the main advantage for Mirrorless is size... but the KP is about the same size as my G85/GH5. The fact that it has 2-card slots packed into there is an engineering marvel! It'll be interesting to see what else they happen to jam-pack in there!!

If past is prologue... then I'm guessing wifi will be there, some kind of 3rd wheel (still wondering about the 4th wheel + left mystery button?), and Pixel-Shift/AA-simulator/horizon correction is here to stay. I can really take it or leave Touch-screen capabilities. But if it's not there, why would they need the sensor? I also don't care too much about MegaPixels at this point (24MPs really is enough now) and I feel Pentax does not lack for dynamic range at all. I will say that my time with K-1 has spoiled me a bit with the articulation. Comes in clutch when shooting above a crowd/sports huddle, and low to the ground. The biggest factor for me is AF, FPS, and Buffer... for sports/wildlife/events. Significant improvement in either of those areas is really the only thing that I think will get me to buy anything new. So far, it feels only a slight improvement. As exciting as this is, it very much is making me feel content with the K-1/K-3 combination!

I tried to find the option on my phone, and couldn't see the option. You have to scroll down (on computer... maybe it will also work on a tablet?) to see the deal for $21. Then once both items are in your cart, there is a $5 off coupon that you can click to bring the total to 16.99, which comes out to 18.05 total (which is the price of the power bank alone). It will say that the total $40, but it takes it off 18.99 once you go to checkout. Not sure how long the deal will be up for.

Just updating... that it did in fact come in 2-days ago. It didn't come in the cool blue box that you see with all of the Unboxing on YouTube. It came with the case, two back end-caps, one front-cap, lens hood, tripod mount. As far as condition, it does appear to meet the advertised condition; in Perfect condition. I wouldn't be surprised if it were some kind of hold-over from a kind of 'review-copy' or so. I can truly say that the lens is built like a tank! It's heavier than any other lens, including my 70-200... almost to the point where its easy for me to feel fatigue just from using it. Maybe, it's also a combination of the needing to use my hand not only to hold the camera+lens, but also needed to use the manual-focus. The Manual Focus feels really nice, and I fully support all manual lenses have that little bump for guidance. The rubber is super squishy-comfortable, but you definitely miss if the little bump isn't felt. 270* is a really long focus throw... and in terms of use, it takes me some serious time to figure out what direction to rotate the barrel to get the focus you want. I have a Tam 90, but I don't remember it's focus being so sensitive, in terms of getting in focus what you want... BUT I don't think I've ever felt so much control, and it might be that its giving a new understanding of DoField. You can really feel it move over your field of view. I also really do love having all of the info on the barrel. I've never really fully understood how or when the 1:x came into play until now (or I'm starting to). The last thing I'll say is Holy Focus Breathing! As you turn the barrel to find your focus, look again and somehow the object has moved slightly closer/further away.

All-in-all, its been a fun couple of days playing with it as a Macro-lens. I imagine as I use it more, I'll get more used to which direction the barrel needs to turn to get the focus I want, and the Focus Breathing really isn't that big of a deal. It's a rugged lens, with superb IQ (might be the best lens that I have, which is saying something!)... for $300, no complaints at all. Makes my K-1 sing! Maybe I'll post some pictures, once I take this thing outside. I don't feel like I need to add any lens to my lineup, as it feels pretty complete now!! (I would like a super telephoto of some kind... hoping for that new teleconverter to extend my Sig 70-200 into 140-400 to help with when I shoot sports + birding)

I would question... is there really something that the Tam 70-200 2.8 or Sig 70-200 2.8 (and other associated focal lengths) don't offer you?? It's true that they no longer support new Pentax mount, but things haven't really changed that much. I've had both the above lenses, and each did everything I imagine wanting it to do. They are both rugged (the Tam maybe a bit more), and if you want silent then the Sigma AF (my current) is whisper level. I've never used the DFA, but I have both the 28-105 + 24-70 and if the 70-200 performs similarly, it doesn't feel like its a noticeable difference. Maybe just the ability to focus-override (that's a legitimate feature when using it with AF, then making a small adjustment to the focus you really want) And then when you factor price (Sig/Tam can be had for roughly $500 vs newer 1.4-7k+ super lenses. It's not 3x as good, if even 1.5x), its punching! I will admit that the Tam 27-75 2.8 isn't as good as the DFA, but for $200 the Tam was well worth it imo, as it gave me the ability to experiment with 2.8 on FF for the first time, while I waited for the DFA price to come down (~$550).

If I feel any limitation in my lens, its in the camera body itself (ex: not having the FPS or Buffer for a situation). But as Serk said, if 'modern' is what you want, that is the situation. I would just say that there doesn't seem to be that big of a difference to me, except in price. When other mounts get new 3rd-support, it is easy to feel like you're getting left behind though so I understand the feeling.

Thought I would update for those curious... the people at Gentec were a big help and one of the most helpful customer service anything that I've ever been in contact with. Not only did they continually call me back, but they also worked with the SIGMA-USA people to get my lens serviced. Just a note for future users... they do seem to have a shortage of parts in the US (Gentec seemed to have supply on-hand, but Sigma said that they were declining to service because they are running out and it is the only way to make sure that they have parts... sounds like BS or at best faulty logic). Just saying that you might need an affiliated company for the work around. This service is free, and they'll even change out the mount for the scratch-less one (though I didn't notice a difference)

I mentioned the lens itself being a bit weird in terms of focusing. Apparently the HSM needed replacing, which ended up being an extra $150 or so... so definitely not in working order as seller claimed. Been using it for the pST 3-months or so, and its just as good as the Tam that it replaced, if not better. It's snappy, and super silent... in a scary way. I also like the interface far better than the weird MF/AF clutch on Tam.

Yeah, it seems to be the perfect Macro lens... once you get used to the focal length. After waffling (and especially in terms of my bank account), I decided to pull the trigger. For $317, it seems like a deal you won't find again. I've been hoping to get into Macro a lot a lot more (have mostly been using my Tam 90 2.8, but have felt it has been lacking) Not sure if it's a covid-19 thing, but it apparently won't get here until May 14th. As it says in the Pentax review, because Pentax has IBIS, that drawback is pretty much negated! It feels like the perfect match for a K-1 (and maybe some TTL-HSS), with the ability to draw out all of the IQ that 36MPs has. And a plus that it comes weather sealed!

Any feedback on the lens itself or things to look out for/tips would be great!!??

Hey,

I was just seeing that Irix announced an Dragonfly 45 1.4, and then on the Pentax In-Depth Lens Reviews I saw one recently for a similar 150 2.8. I have a Tam 90 2.8, but I have always thought about adding a 135mm at some point... so it seemed kind of similar. Never had an Irix, but I've heard really good things. I do really like the look of them (kind of like a Samyang/Rokinon, but the next step).
Irix 150mm F2.8 Macro Review - Introduction | PentaxForums.com Reviews

On Amazon they have the same lens, from the same retail/manufacturer in 'Good' condition for $299 (listed $495). You have to click the other sellers option... but if you look, I think you'll see that its from the same company/location as the 'New' full-price. To buy or not to buy ( a used K5)

I think it's fine. I had a K-5, and put thousands of shots on it. It is an amazing camera! As my first DSLR, I have a lot of love for it.

I think a lot of it depends on the price. But for me, its always difficult for me to recommend a K-5 (or any camera prior to K-5) and that is not because of flaws with a K-5... but it is because of the existence of the K-3! Unless the price is around $100, I don't think I can push people to that place. For ~$300 you can get a K-3, and it is such a big upgrade in almost every way. The AA-filter, 24MP sensor pretty much gives you the IQ of any (APS-C) camera that exists today, 2-card slots, AF features, Buffer. I'm not sure any of the APS-C cameras that have come out since this one (K-3ii, KP, K-70) aren't really that big of a detour.

So I would probably not recommend it... I'd instead save slightly more to get a K-3. But if that logic doesn't match what you care about... you will be getting a durable camera that will outlast your need, like most Pentax Cameras.

This, even if you are set to backup to both cards, should still work with just one card inside. The camera will blink at you after every picture that you take, that the card is empty/not saving to card. But if you look at the number of pictures on the display... the number is going down. Yep... hope you enjoy the shooting! K-1 is perfect in almost every way.

I have to 2nd macman's ON1 suggestion. While I don't think that it is a Photoshop specific replacement... there are a lot of features that it allows that you would use Photoshop for. I would guess it probably allows 75% or so of what most people need in terms of editing. What I can say, is that it a pretty complete replacement for Lightroom though. The only downside to it over Lightroom, is its inability to import presets from Lightroom into ON1. It does have some pretty good presets itself, and each month they come out with tons of new ones, from photographer catalogues too (all completely free!). There are also tons of youtube tutorials too. There is only a one-time fee (I think that the 2018 version was $40, with every single add-on). It's a great value and made me leave Lightroom/Ps behind (still use Adobe Elements/Premiere for video especially, but their photo-editor is pretty good... Elements + ON1 is a pretty powerful combo).

I would direct you to FirstMan's video comparing a lot of them:

I think the biggest problem I have with the way that they continue to crank out camera in this whole 'mirrorless war' is how frequently these cameras come out. I think its easier to swallow if they were more affordable (in that $1000 or so would be affordable, as any camera is going to cost some). I have been shooting/using my K-1/K-3 combo since 2016 and I don't think I've come close to squeezing all of the potential out of it...

I do really think the features are enticing... when the large group of YouTube reviewers have said that they can't think of anything to really change, it does feel that way. I do wonder what it might be like to not really have to concentrate on settings, and focus almost solely on composition (since it does seem like it truly does do the work for you). BUT the a7R(2014), a7Rii (2015), a7Riii (2017), and now a7Riv being released in 2019, means that the next camera will be out in 2 years. I remember the a7 (Jan) + a7ii (Nov) getting released literally in the same year - 2014. It just feels like a short shelf-life for something that cost $3500 (not counting the huge increase in lenses, and SD cards that though fast also cost upwards of 70-100per). It's quite the hit, no matter how amazing the camera will be. It just makes it difficult and makes me hesitant to use that money, when something new will come out later for that same price... with my K-1 sitting there in the wing...

I think I'll keep that money (while still a bit jealous of some capabilities) and just wait for whatever small spec increase that Pentax comes out with. If they ever give me something close to the d850 (the K-1 was a d810, with extra features for almost half-price), I will have no more complaints or needs. I continue to think that is the perfect DSLR.

One K-Mount PRIME to rule them all 2019

This is hard for me... as I really like all of my primes. My Tam 90 2.8 is great as I love the compression during portraits, focus limiter, great 1:1 macro. I also really like that on APS-C it becomes 135, which really helped save me after my 70-200 RIPed (and I do enjoy the compression at 135 too). Then there's the 50 1.8 that I used to have that is near and dear to my heart... as the first real prime/lens I got to cut my teeth on. My honest opinion would probably be the DFA 50 1.4, but since I've never used it, that might not be fair (it is also almost 2x the price of the lens below, or what I paid anyways)...

My Sigma 35mm 1.4 is so hard to top!! The moment I got it, most of what I shot with just melted away. I love the unique look it gives subjects, getting their environments too. I think every picture I've taken, there's something to enjoy about it. I love the bokeh and ability to isolate a subject. The build quality is also top-notch. On my APS-C/K-3, it's practically 50mm prime, so there's that too. This lens has some kind of magic inside of it. I might be wrong, since this is the only modern 1.4 lens I've ever used... and maybe they're all like this. Being compatible with FF is also an important factor. I haven't really liked handling the telephoto prime lenses as there's something about wanting to have the flexibility of zooming in/out as I need. Maybe the FA 43 Limited is the sweet spot between both of these focal lengths, and I've heard great things... but I've never used the limiteds. So, I don't think a PRIME would ever be what I grab if I could only use just one lens for the future, but if I could only grab one prime and destroy all of the others: Sigma 35mm f1.4 Art...

I think most people have kind of said everything I'm going to say... always late

I think that cameras are so much more capable than most people need. I have a K-3 and K-1 (after giving away K-5 prior), and I feel like I have barely touched the surface of what either can do. It would be wrong of me to say that they don't have flaws (ex: K-1 is a perfect camera IMO, except for the sometimes painful RAW buffer and fps!; using my K-3 makes me long for the higher resolution/dynamic range/noise capabilities of my K-1; Got a Pana G85 specifically for video), but there is something nice about the process that it takes to make my vision a reality. I've used Canon/Nikon/Sony/Panasonic, and feel like there's less 'photography' involved. As counter as this may seem to the above, Pentax has made me be more patient and be more purposeful with how/when I use my camera or change my settings. There's something nice about taking a photo and knowing that its because I set that shot up all by myself, and encourages me to improve my skills/technique for the times when the same moments continue to come up. When I've used other company's (high-end) cameras, I feel like I get to take the short-cut a lot more, and forfeit my own personal skill(s).

There's also something nice about supporting a company that I think just gets things right! I like what Pentax stands for... dual scroll-wheels, IBIS, class leading weather-sealing, green button!!!, K-mount compatibility (you mean the lens that fits on my K-1 can also work on my k1000? = blows kids minds), Pixel shift, AA-simulator (what is this sorcery??), durability (look the other way at k-30/50); are all standard on even their entry-level offerings (still remember when I decided to give up film and get my first digital camera, and I saw a military guy poor sand and drench his camera in water... probably never do that, but that's what build quality means). I was talking with my brother's wife when she was thinking about getting getting a Nikon 5600 kit that she thought was affordable (for $600). Look at the Nikon 5600/Canon t7i/etc and (like I told her), one scroll wheel, no weather-sealing, no IBIS would be a HARD pass. She would end up getting a KP for $625: Dual scroll wheel, IBIS, weather-sealing, green button, Pixel-shift, noise capabilities that IMO beat my K-1, that cool grey focus-peaking thing that makes me jealous (why is this not on my K-1 through firmware update?.. I know, I rarely ever use this :sigh:), all packed into a size smaller than most mirrorless. I like a company who doesn't seem to put a camera out for cameras sake... and strongly think that when people criticize Pentax, they mean when comparing all of the flagships. You have to get up to the 80D/7500 ($800) to even rival what you find in a K-3 ($350-400). It's true that the K-1ii is the first camera where I shook my head.

I talk to my students about photographer and cameras, and it is true that it takes a certain type of person to own a Pentax camera. I tell them that you have to be okay with the waiting game! Other companies will come out with camera after camera: ### AF points, edge to edge, joystick, silent shooting, FPS until your battery dies or you die, 4k/8k, 60p/120p, 6k photo mode, 50/100MP, 8-bit/10-bit, my battery grip allows me to _____... and the list goes on... or that new 3rd-party lens comes out for everyone but you. Meanwhile you're sitting there with the same camera from 4-5 years ago with zero indication that anything is happening or the flash/lens you have to buy is from 2012 (that Tamron 70-200 2.8 at %60 discount... but hey).

I do think that Pentax is at a crossroads though. I think the reason the K-1ii was such a dud/non-factor, was because Pentax might be in a bottle-neck where they realize that whatever they release is going to be a small improvement. I respect Pentax because they release cameras for a purpose. I remember thinking that the jump from K-5 to K-3 was significant (16 to 24, 2 card slot, 11 to 27 focus point, AA-simulator, 12800 to 51200 ISO), and then K-1 was basically a 810 with cram-packed features somehow at half the price. I might be wrong?, but we might not have gotten a new camera because there truly isn't anything new. They might also have exhausted anymore new numbers (K-0, K-2?). Like I wrote in that Essay Giveaway awhile back. Pentax is slow, but you can be assured that the camera they give you will last you until the next one (giving you time to appreciate and develop your newest skills), and the wait will be very worth it once something in the numbers finally drops...

New Sony APS-C Sensor - 26MP

I continue to believe that making 2-scroll wheels standard on even your entry level. Its really hard to use the t7i/d5600 with their take camera off face + hold down button to change settings. I think that Canon/Nikon don't even really compare until you get to the 80d/d7500 (and even then no IBIS, etc), can get a K-3 for $350 now ... and more importantly 'Green Button'. I continue to wonder why there isn't a Green Button on every camera? (or am I wrong?) Pentax is great because it is a company that wants you to actually learn the photography trade, and getting off Auto-features can be difficult. Green Button gives you the freedom to live in manual, with the 'training-wheels' to resort back to if you need it.

The biggest thing that I took away or my initial thought from the rumor, if true... you would only purchase sensor(s) plural if you were in a place to make/manufacture multiple cameras, no? I imagine if you were still in R+D, you would only need whatever amount the dev-team would need. You wouldn't need a large amount unless you were ready to put in cameras to take to market? In truth, I probably still won't purchase a new one, unless the features are game-changing... which is rare for Pentax IMO (I know, that contradicts the above a bit). I find it difficult to find a scenario in which my K-3 (action, more zoom/reach) , K-1 (detail, low-light), or Panasonic G85 (video) can't tackle. I doubt you can improve the IQ. If you could somehow just put the RAW buffer from K-3 in the K-1, that be the ideal (I truthfully think it is in the K-1, but with 36MP files, it just fills up faster). That is seriously the only thing that stops K-1 from being the perfect stills camera IMO.

K1 users: what lenses do you use?

I use a series of lenses. I too bought a K-1, coming from my K-5 APS-C kit, which I will say that I wish I would have known prior to switching to FFrame... what it took to make it work. I knew that there were only some lenses that wouldn't work, BUT I didn't think about the fact that I would have to overhaul my entire lineup.

DA 50 1.8 ($90):
The only real hold-over from the APS-C kit. It does cover the entire K-1 sensor without any vignette (or its barely visible). This is great because of how affordable this glass is, at the quality that it is. The only thing I don't like about this lens is that it doesn't have any 'manual' controls (ex: controlling F-stop) and how plastic-y it is. Sadly, this lens rarely comes off the shelf due to a couple of lenses that fill this place.

FA 28-105 kit lens ($350)

I think this lens is amazingly sharp. It's a bit unfair to compare it to other kit lenses. This lens mostly comes out during the day-time when I need something versatile or need something more weather resistant. This was my first lens for the camera, and I really love the focal range. It's as good as any other lens, provided that you don't need the light. Best walk-around lens!

Tamron 28-70 2.8 ($320):
This lens was my workhorse lens for a pretty long time. This lens is really great for anyone looking for something in that mid-focal range, with constant aperture. Mine has gone through a lot. I shoot a lot of pictures for/at my school, and once a student opens up my bag, and it fell out and hit at the filter thread. It still works, but it slowly cracked at the filter thread so it literally has the initial element on the end. One thing I didn't know about this lens that I don't thing people mention, is that you can't put the lens hood on without it showing up in pictures. This lens was replaced a month or so ago.

Pentax DFA 24-70 2.8 ($600):
The newest addition, purchased from a forum user at super affordable price. This lens is great! I don't think I feel like the quality is mind-blowing in comparison with the above. I think the above lens is more than enough. There are two things to know about this lens: 1) This lens is really quiet. It's really great to use, and a lot of time you forget that it works; 2) This lens is massive! It has a 82mm thread and is bigger than the actual camera, which is impressive for a camera that is already big.

Sigma 17-35 2.8-4 DG EX ($375):
This lens I got back 3 years or so ago. I initially got this because I wanted something UWide, and I was also starting to explore using the 35mm focal length, so it helped dip my toes into this. Used to get into Astro, but it doesn't have as fast of f-stop as you'd like. It's important to note that there are two versions of this lens. You know the real difference due to the Filter thread: DG (82mm) vs non (77mm).

Sigma 35 1.4 Art ($600):
Of course, the above lens didn't stop me from eventually getting this lens. Although the f/2.8 is great, I wanted something that gave even better separation... and when a forum member had it for a lower price, it seemed nice. This lens is a tank, and a tribute to the build quality. I can truly tell you that this is easily the greatest lens I've ever used!!! The separation, focus speed, ability in low light. It is amazing. I feel that it is difficult to take a bad photo. It is hard to take this lens off your camera. I believe that they rated this lens is the #1 Astro lens. Most lens use pretty much stopped (unless on event, where zooms are helpful).

Tamron 90mm 2.8 ($275):
I really like this lens for portraiture. The quality is pretty good, and it provides 1:1 Macro work. The filter thread is really weird, and the glass is pretty deep inside the lens. it also has a limiter on the focusing... so if you are having a problem with focusing, switch it to Limit... and it pretty much goes away. It does lead to a much shallower throw.

Tamron 70-200 2.8 ($425)... RIP:
This lens is super amazing! I've never used the DFA lens, but his lens has so much quality to it. Its lighter than the other lenses at the range. it does have a weird AF/MF clutch to it, but I rarely use it anyways... but it does focus/zoom all internally (is weird if you've never experienced). Sadly, this lens RIPed when a student slammed their backpack on the a desk, and my life went in slow motion as it smacked against the grown (leading to a bend in the neck)

Sigma 70-200 2.8 HSM II ($425):
This one I haven't actually used. Purchased this from a forum member quickly after the RIP above. I don't know if it is just his copy, but it needs to be sent into SIGMA to get serviced... which has a limited supply (is currently being serviced). When not, this lens freezes your entire K-1. I do feel like I was a bit scammed, as within 2-days the forum member told me 'all sales are final' ... and said that it worked perfectly on his K-3. I just recently got a K-3 at an amazing price, and the lens itself has some problems. Just saying

Sigma 170-500 5-6.3 ($375):
I initially got this to use during birding and for Super-telephoto use. This lens is fine, but clunky. The AF isn't fast enough, and doesn't find sharpness quickly. I've only used it trying to shoot sports, so though it does struggle in sports... it does have great quality in non-fast environments. I've used this very rarely, as I normally just use the 70-200 in most cases.

That's pretty much the current lineup, and I feel that it's pretty complete for most situations you might come across. I really can't think of something to add to it (??). People on websites always knock Pentax lens lineup... but I can't disagree more! For roughly ~$2000 (if I hadn't duplicated), I have a lens lineup that helps any situation.

For those curious:
My old APS-C kit consisted of: Sigma 30 1.4, Sigma 18-250 3.5-6.3, Sigma 28-80 + 70-300 (prior to getting the 18-250). After failing to find anyone to buy this gear, I ended up giving it (w/bag) to a student's family that I work with [I'm a teacher]

I'm so very confused, if the pictures just posted to pentaxrumors is correct... I literally just took out my K-1, just to make sure I wasn't seeing things. This looks identical in every way to the camera I currently have in my hand. Looking over the specs, besides a boost in ISO performance, maybe a slight improvement on Pixel-shift (which I truly didn't ask for)... I fail to spot the key difference. What am I missing?? People keep comparing this to the K-5ii release, but removing the AA-filter was a big deal, and the improvements to ISO were very needed. This literally feels like the same camera. I think ISO can be difficult to spot, especially in a camera that already had amazing ISO control and dynamic range... Is this really what has delayed development of a APS-C or Medium format successor??... 'say it ain't so Pentax, say it ain't so'...

I think this is the best wrist strap:
https://www.amazon.com/Polaroid-Neoprene-Adjustable-Camcorders-Binoculars/dp...AD0ZC7PC4CMRDA

I do think that a wrist strap is a little heavy to just be walking around with. It is better than a neck strap IMO, but that's just personal preference. I think if you're going to go personal preference, shoulder strap is the way to go.

If carrying and convenience is the goal... I high suggest a belt mount (is that the name). They are so convenient!! You clip it onto your belt, and boom... makes it so that you can just walk around. Sometimes I re-tighten the mount just to be sure, but it's very convenient for walking around (especially when it comes to the heft of Pentax cameras... they feel bigger to me anyways), and secure:

I agree with everyone... that's an amazing value! I also don't think you'll miss the lens hood. Not sure if you replaced yours, but the hood can clip the edge of your photos on the K-1... so I rarely use it with the lens. In fact, I don't even know if I still have the lens, or at least where it's at. I actually have both Tamron 28-75, and the
D FA 28-105 lens. I think they are both extremely affordable, and both give sharp results... just different situations. I use the 28-105 as just a great walk-around lens or if/when I happen to be in a situation that might include some rough weather... and the Tamron for low-light and as a jack-of-all-trades lens for more professional work.

I have no clue what magic combination of words made them give you $50 dollars back, but that's amazing!
