Pixel Shift PEF vs DNG image processing workflow info needed

Hello Toadhopper,

I'm a new-ish K1 user also. Do not despair, I believe this will help you. Go into your settings, go to Image Capture Settings Screen 2, go to RAW File Format, Switch from PEF to DNG. Save your settings.

Your raw files will now be default stored as adobe raw files. I don't believe there is any difference in information stored. They will easily import and be read by Lightroom. The pixel shift files will simply be larger than normal raws.

Here are some videos I found of someone comparing the differences of pixel shift in the different programs.

To me they seem very minor! After messing about with my own pictures, I will only use RT to open the file and save it for later editing in light room if it has movement artifacts initially.

I haven't used pixel shift a ton, but out of maybe 25 or so, I've only had 1 with the motion artifacts that required it. I sent them right to lightroom and worked with them as normal.

I know very little about silky pix, but it doesn't seem to be required. If this is confusing PM me, and I'll send you my discord details. Perhaps I can help you get it sorted.

Heya,

Experimenting myself with Pixel Shift. I was trying some landscape pictures. Everyone says the same thing, that Light Room does a poor job, and Silkypix or something else does a better job. When I shoot I just end up with one big .DNG file. It seems to combine it entirely within the camera? I was under the impression I had to combine them with the software later.

I will agree that the non-shift images are beaten in sharpness by the shift images I take. However when I open them up side-by-side in Silkypix and LR, It seems to be better in LR. The only thing I'm changing is cranking sharpness to max in both programs. The file is the same. I'm read on 10 websites that LR is poor at this... so my question is what setting or processing am I missing?

I'm investing most of my time learning Lightroom, but if results are better with this RawTherapee then maybe I should try it... People seem to be eluding to somehow adjusting the photo initially in other software, then fine tuning in LR. I can't seem to get anything to sharpen better than LR by default?

I've attached a screen shot to illustrate. There must be something I'm missing.

Thanks,
Reid

Took a trip to Nashville with my wife who really wanted to see the country music hall of fame. We got back first week of April, going through pictures now.

This is K1 with the 28-105 @ 34mm, F4.5, iso800, 1/50. I think I compressed it a bit much with lightroom.

Not a chance, so far anyways. I'm still in that honeymoon new camera phase. Plus it was a miserably cold winter-spring since I've got the thing, so it's been indoor only. I decided to stick with pentax because they are tough... so this has me a little worried.

I put my K-50 through hell and back. I got it with air miles and didn't really care about it until i got the photography addiction. It rattled around in beach bags, back packs, left it out in the rain camping. That thing was bullet proof, my little cousin is still using it.

I bought it off amazon.ca, so I wonder what they will say. I'll update the thread as i go.

thanks all

Hiya,

Lurker with a first post. Looking for some advise. Upgraded my k50 to K1 before christmas, and now i've noticed one column of pixels on fhe lcd is a off colour of yellow. If i look for it I notice it, but most of the time I dont. It's kind of off to the side.

I took my K1 on vacation, and it didnt really affect anything. The pictures all come out fine so i'm sure its just the LCD pannel.

Do you guys think i should send it away for warrenty encase it gets worse? If it stays like this forever I probably dont care. There is no repair place here, I would be without my baby for a month or better. :(

Any advise appreciated!

Reid
