The Pacific coast has been receiving waves of storms, rain and snow, over the past several days.

Yesterday, as yet another series of squalls and storms rolled in from the West, I went to meet the front. I stumbled onto a beach I'd not been to before. I found a spontaneous waterfall from the runoff of the rainwater from the cliffs and higher ground adjacent to the beach.

This is a cropped four-photo pano shot with a 15-30 zoom.

Beautiful, dramatic image! Since it was already shot dark, I wonder what would happen with a burned\darker foreground? Might that add to the drama (contrasting with the beautiful, bright peak)?

This might be a striking b/w as well.

In any case, it's gonna look great on your wall!

Fabulous image, k-amps. Thanks for sharing your pre-processed Raw. By doing so, you remind me once again of the import and advantage of exposing for the highlights! (My Olympus OM-D EM-1 did not have a highlights warning in the focusing preview which made this more challenging...)

The dynamic range and the IBIS demonstrated by this one photo, are impressive indeed. Well done, and thanks again for posting the before and after here.

How well is the K-1 doing (selling) in North America and the world ?

I am personally thrilled with my K-1. I very recently moved to its full frame after repeatedly hitting the resolution wall with my Olympus 4/3s system (OM-D E-M1).

My brief observations about Pentax (which I've used since 1981), is that both its innovation and image quality prowess have always exceeded its marketing savvy.

This became apparent to me again recently when I became interested in the K-1 at the very time when Olympus announced its new flagship, the OM-D E-M1 Mark II. The amount of publicity for the announced but not yet released camera -- the hype, if you will -- totally swamped the amount of information I was finding for the K-1 which had been out for months!

An interesting case in point, Tony Northrup, whose videos on YouTube garners tens of thousands of views each, could not get a loaner K-1 from Ricoh \ Pentax for his intended review video of the K-1.

Northrup had to borrow a K-1 from a viewer fan of his YouTube channel to evaluate the camera. Still, Tony ended up naming the K-1 as his camera of the year and as his favorite for landscapes (for all the reasons we know and love).

Pentax, unlike all the other familiar brand names, just doesn't do the marketing thing very well. If the company is not wooing reviewers, bloggers, and so on and the overall DSLR market is shrinking (which it is) and the company is retracting its US operations... WHOA!

I want the Pentax brand to succeed. But I have to wonder about Ricoh's strategy and its execution.

In a competitive market, the best product in the world requires aggressive support in the classic five P's of marketing: Product, Placement, Promotion, Pricing, Positioning. With the K-1, Ricoh has the product and the pricing.

But the others?

It's been raining some in Northern California. And more is expected this weekend. That means two things. The drought-parched reservoirs are being replenished.(Yay!) And fungi are growing in the local redwood forests!

I took my new K-1 and FA 100 2.8 WR Macro to record the mycological event... [ I am brand spanking new to macro. But had a blast. All manual focus. Light was too low for auto focus. ]

A wider perspective from the Pentax D-FA 15-30...

I am lugging a full K-1 kit -- zooms, the 100 macro, and tripod in a Lowepro backpack and finding it all a joy to work with.

Spent all day in the rain the other day to capture some of those fungi shots. Didn't worry a whit about the gear. Loved it!

Recommitting to Pentax

Greetings fellow Pentaxians! I bought my first Pentax, the storied MX, in 1981 to document the birth of my first son. (Fantastic experience!) Since then, I have seen life with one eye closed and the other squinting. Marvelous!

In a few hours, Santa will bestow a new K-1 upon me and I will resume shooting landscapes and artistic natural world art in glorious high resolution. Can't wait!

My detour to the K-1 was via the K-20D and the amazing little MX-1 (mini retro!). Most recently I the seriously jumped into the micro 4/3s system. I have a fairly complete Olympus kit (OM-D EM-1 and Pro lenses). It's great gear, but I soon discovered the limits of that little sensor for my grander ambitions. So hello, K-1!

Thanks to You
The members of this forum have been amazingly helpful in confirming my decision to move back to Pentax and in making my initial lens selections. Your thoughtful, knowledgeable comments and posts of amazing pictures -- with very helpful lens data -- informed my purchase judgments immensely. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

In return, I expect to contribute something of value to the Community.

Slide Conversions?
A question if I may: What slide conversion service do you recommend?

Some years back I sent off to a few different services some hundreds of slides for conversion to digital. However, I did not opt for the highest resolution at the time. :(

Now that the quality of digital photography and my post processing skills have progressed considerably, I would like to have all my best Kodachrome, Ektachrome, and Velvia shots in my digital collection looking their absolute best.

What slide conversion service would you suggest I trust my best historical images to for conversion?

Thanks yet again!

Warmly,

Don

Frederic,

A brief note of appreciation for the photos you routinely share. And the manner in which you do it.

I am grateful not only for your photographic sensibilities (in the natural world and in the portraits of your lovely model), but also the painstaking care you give to listing the lens data for each picture. This is very helpful information.

You are in a distinguished club of considerate shooters that I hope will inspire others here by your example.

Stunning shot! Beautiful light. So well framed. And is that graffiti on the rock in the left mid-ground!?!

The photo of Icicle Creek is gorgeous. The color of light on the water and rocks is quite captivating! Beautiful.

And a note of gratitude to you and others here who utilize the "View Picture EXIF" function.

Santa delivers my K-1 in two weeks. So I've not yet had the pleasure of posting any photos here.

I don't know the mechanics of posting on the Forum but am watching the EXIF info whenever I can to work my Shopping List for lenses! I am an incurable EXIF snooper. I find it very instructive to my photography education. :-)

Cheers.

I second this! The photo exudes a distinctly classic vibe. The dark clothing signals retro. The woman is reminiscent of Golda Meier. The haircut and glasses on the gentleman could be from the '60s.

And the processing is simply beautiful.

A very evocative environmental portrait, well executed.
