Sigma (Bigma) 50-500 Lens service needed

Hello

I was recently on a photo trip to Bosque in New Mexico to shoot the cranes. While there, I had a lot of trouble with the auto-focus of my Sigma 50-500. The lens / camera struggled to lock-on to focus throughout the week. When I returned home and looked through my photos on a larger monitor, I discovered that many, if not most of my shots with the long lens were not focused properly. The lens does not focus smoothly, whether auto or manually turning the focus ring. I am assuming that it needs cleaned and serviced. Who do you recommend I contact to get this lens checked out?

Thank you,
Tony

Thanks to both of you for your replies. I contacted Phototronic in Topeka yesterday. He is only a couple of hours away from me. He told me that he is limited in what he can do to Sigma lenses as Sigma does not make parts available to independent repair shops. He will take a look and see if he believes he can help me with my lens. It looks like I will be shipping it to one of their authorized repair shops.

I would like to add an L-bracket and start using an Arca Swiss system. Will an Arca Swiss clamp screw on to a Manfrotto hex plate to allow me to use the plates & head that I already have? If so, what will I need to do this?

Thanks,
Tony

Help choose a lens in the 70-200 range

Thank you for all of your responses. I went with the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8. I found a used one at Adorama for a good price and included it with my K-3II order. The Sigma 100-300 in the marketplace here tempted me. I needed to get a lens for my son too, so I ordered the Pentax 55-300 to give him some range with his first lens.

Thanks.

I should have specified what other lenses I have: I have a Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 on the wide end and I have an older Tokina Manual Focus 150-500 at the long end for wildlife. I'm upgrading in the middle.

Hello

I am upgrading from a K20-D to a K-3 II. My son has discovered photography so he will get the K20-D. I want to upgrade a lens on this order. I am trying to decide between (so far) the Pentax 60-250 f/4 and the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8. I would appreciate your input. I shoot mostly wildlife/landscape. The lower price of the Tamron is appealing, of course, but I could be convinced to spend more for the 60-250.

What factors should I consider? Are there durability issues with either lens? I've read some things about the Pentax and some issues with the SDM. Can you please tell me what this is and enlighten me on the issues with it, and if they are relevant now? Any other candidates I've missed?

Thank you,
Tony

Hello. I was slightly involved here about 15 years ago. I couldn't figure out my previous email, user name or password, so I'm back with a new account. I've gone from a second-hand, $30 Sears SLR with a K-mount in the late-70's to a PZ1-P to a K-20D back in 2008. Now my son is taking a photography class in high school and wants to go shooting with me, so I'm getting ready to order a K-3 II for me; my son will get the K-20D. I will be reading about lens upgrade decisions and will be posting questions.

Thanks for the forum. I've already learned a lot.
