Completely agree with you there.
I'm in customer service and sales myself so just found the way they handled it a bit off putting. But yes everyone's experience is different.

Good how?

I've had 2 interactions with them in terms of warranty and both times it's been a let down. Basically making me feel that I didn't know what I was talking about. Camera clinic is much better in that regard. YMMV

My issue started with squealing and progressed to judder.
Based on where you are repair could take up to 4 weeks. I went to the melbourne warranty handler and was told that the sound didn't mean anything and was normal. Although when I insisted that I came from canon and usually squealing and judder are indications of motor failure they then sent the lens to Japan and hats when it got addressed. At aus $2500 I wasn't taking no for an answer.

Hey mate
Had the same issue and I was told by warranty that's normal.
I insisted on sending it in anyway and Japan repair centre came back with changing the motor and lens collar.
Best send it in.
Seems to be a motor issue. Mine did that while going from close focus to infinity and back. Mine also made a slight judder sound.

Pentax-D FA 24-70mm has knocking sounds when focusing - is this normal?

I feel pentax system is too young for a lot of these issues to be blogged or appear in forums but from my experience, there seem to be some qa issues on these new lenses. What does worry me is that the lens I got repaired wasn't even 3 months old and the warranty 'experts' here in melbourne made me feel as if I was plucking things off the air and they couldn't hear any out of the ordinary sounds. It's only when I got a bit more pushy did they send the lens to Japan to repair and Japan turned around and admitted the motor was failing.
So go with your experience and gut feeling on this one even if the warranty company pushes back. Depending on which county you're in your mileage may vary. The retailer from who I bought the 24-70 was kind enough to offer a full replacement for another unrelated issue where the lens was smearing lights in the bottom middle corners when I was attempting long exposures. The only reason the issue came forth was when I used it to photograph cityscapes using ping exposure. Again the warranty handling company didn't think there was anything wrong with it. Surprise surprise

I have both the dfa 24-70 and 70-200. My copy of 24-70 doesn't make any sound as such that you described but just an audible hiss. My first copy of 70-200 did make some grinding sounds and went into repair where they subsequently changed the motor and front filter ring!

I'm getting similar outlines around bright lights but in night shots esp around streetlights.
The lens used is a Pentax 24-70mm f2.8 hd fa!!!
No idea why I get those outlines

It's focussed to infinity so shouldn't matter as both those walls are near to each other may be decentered optics is also an issue right is more in focus than the left one. Will try to do a more controlled test and see

This ones exif is as follows:

Shutter Speed: 30sec
Aperture: 8.0
ISO:100
Has been pushed 2ev in post to bring out the shadows.

If i were a professional photographer and presented this result to a client then i'm not sure i would be paid for it haha

Just awful. Hoping that its just a sample/qc issue

Spoke to someone at CR Kennedy, the distributors for Pentax and he seems to suggest I'm the first one ever reporting this issue. He has been kind enough to take a sample camera and lens ad test it for me. Fingers crossed its just a sample variation otherwise not sure what i would do with the lens.
More update day after tomorrow after his test.

Thats my bad. May have attached the wrong picture. Although the result is exactly the same. In fact i would've thought diffraction had something to do with it but that is not the case.
Any aperture seeting beyond 6.7 yields the same horrible result. Some photos i took today are so bad that it feels like an oil painting rather than a photo!

The top photos prove there are no sensor reflections in play here as some Sony sensors are plagued with such issues. All my takumars produce much better resolution than this expensive zoom. Not sure if there is sample variation here. Haven't heard anything from Ricoh either.

These photos are much better but they are also in good light. Not sure if the lighting brings out the worse in this lens??

more samples.
1st one is the Pentax 24-70mm f2.8 and second one is from the 30yr old S-M-C Takumar 85mm
what a differene.
Both shots were taken at 30sec exposure f6.7 but the one from the Pentax 24-70 is horrible.

The S-M-C Takumar costs $500 AUD and Pentax 24-70mm costs $1999.00

Have sent an email to Ricoh auth distributors here in aus will keep everyone posted. It seems an issue with maybe a particular kind of light source.
Has left me perplexed. There's no other lens that I can buy in that focal length and of it turns out to be a lens feature then that will be very disappointing.
My 40yr old takumars have much better resolution than this lens. At least the copy I have.

Haha no UV filters and no filters for that matter. Not sure what it is, have never seen anything like that before from my Nikon and Canon gear. Otherwise the lens is fantastic. Although I haven't been able to get out much will see if I can get photos of a different subject and produce different result. I pray it does otherwise its going back. So frustrating, theres not one single 3rd party lens out there in K mount

Tried all apertures and same result.
My sensor is fine as I have about 8 Takumars and they work absolutely fine

Hey mate
just wondering if you've done any cityscapes and encountered smeared halos/blobs around light sources?
I have this lens and am facing this issue.

Hi All,

I might be new to this forum but am not exactly a novice or an expert. Somewhere in the middle.

I purchased a Pentax 28-105mm f4-5.6 and encountered a strange issue. It looked like saggital coma flare but cannot be certain. I returned the lens and then bought the Pentax f24-70mm f2.8. I encountered the same issue on this lens as well (picture attached).

There seem to be weird smeared blobs/halos around bright light sources. They are random around some and some not. Tried looking on the web and couldn't find anything. Did come across something similar and on Ken Rockwell's site of all places. Seemed to suggest that it is Saggital Coma Flare.

Would appreciate if someone with similar experiences would like to elaborate or let me know how they got around this issue. This is a deal breaker as I do mostly night photography of cityscapes and cannot escape light sources. Even my Takumars are worlds better.
