DA 35 2.4 vs M 35 2.8

Huh! I hate criminals! ;) I guess I have my answer. Damn LBA.

Oh! You're right. My eyes (and emotions) played a trick on me right there. It doesn't help that equipment is listed as a series of numbers and letters separated by spaces. Too bad.

Well that settles it! I'm looking for a used copy. Another 35mm is not going to hurt.

DA 35 2.4 vs M 35 2.8

Thank you all for your replies. I read each one and appreciate the contributions.

The consensus seems to be that the DA 35 is in fact sharp from wide open. What I had hoped for was a COMPARISON from owners who had both the M 35 2.8 and DA 35 2.4. I'm sorry. I guess I was not being very clear. I apologize.

When I said that the M 35 2.8 was a little soft, I was comparing it to lenses like my FA 50mm 1.7 and M 50mm 1.7. The M 35 IS quite sharp, just not AS SHARP as the FA 50 s is wide open. The reason I ask this is because having read that the DA 35 2.4 is basically a stopped down FA 35 f2 in a plastic body, I hoped it would be THAT lens that is very, very sharp from wide open AND faster than 2.8.

Now in writing this I realize that sharpness isn't everything. As some of you have helpfully pointed out, bokeh and rendering are different and preferences in these areas are subjective. And I UNDERSTAND that sample selection may cause the variation between samples to be greater than the ones between different lens designs. So maybe this IS a dumb question. :( Maybe all I want is a reason to justify buying the DA 35 2.4 SMH :asleep:.
However, I would like to hear from owners of both like ChristianRock below.

ChristianRock, thanks for the reply. Looking at your equipment list I see you have both lenses. Do you think both are comparable wide open? Can you elaborate on the differences if that's not too much to ask? Maybe you're the one who can finally put me out of my misery.:)

DA 35 2.4 vs M 35 2.8

I just recently purchased an M 35mm 2.8 in near mint condition and though i love it from f4 and up, it's a little soft at f 2.8.
I was thinking of getting a DA 35mm 2.4 for around 90 US. Is that lens sharper at 2.4 than the M 35 at 2.8?

The answer is of course to just get it and see, but I have my eye on both a 40mm XS and a 28mm prime and I don't want to waste money on another 35 if the IQ isn't really significantly better. The M also has a nice dampened focus ring and an aperture ring for hyperfocal or zone focusing that the DA does not have.

So I guess the question is this: Based on IQ alone (I'm comfortable manually focusing and I have a split screen installed on my dslr), is there a significant difference between IQ in the M35 2.8 and the DA35 2.4? I assume some of you own a copy of both lenses and I would like comparisons from both.

Thanks everyone.

Thanks for the responses. I guess what I can do is just not use my classes when I do use my camera, at least for now.

In my research my camera uses an FQ model eyecup.
Most of the newer models use an FR model eyecup.

I just wonder if these are compatible.

By the way, I just wanted to know if these eye cups from all Pentax bodies are compatible. If I can find one on an old body I'll just use that. For example is a K-R eye cup compatible with a K-m Eye cup?
Is a k-5 eye cup compatible with a k-x eye cup? Do the k-s1 and k-s2 use interchangeable eye cups?

I AM planning to get a K-S1 in a few months. That's actually one of the reasons why I don't think I'll buy a new eye cup. But I do love my K-X. It's what got me into Pentax and I have taken some very, very good pictures with it. I think the K-S1 would be just the thing for me. K-S2 weather sealing, HD Timelapse, and just overall design and handling seem to be better (I have tried one in the store) but it's just too bulky and heavy for me.

Thanks to everyone for the help. PF really is the most helpful forum I've been on (and I'm a member of many other non camera related forums).

I see. Im talking about the rubber (silicon?) one around the eyepiece that comes with the camera. The one you need to take off to change the diopter settings.
So in summary you're saying i don't need it but it's nice to have. OKm thanks for the quick reply by the way!

So my brother used my camera on his trip to Europe. When I checked my cam, the eye cup on my Pentax k-x was damaged and came off, exposing the diopter. I took it off and still use my camera. Do i need to replace it? Is this necessary?
Thanks.

Still using mine. I think paired with a DA 40mm XS, the streamlined size for a DSLR cannot be beat.

Thanks for all the replies!
If I ever switch to Fuji it will be because of the very good, very small, and very fast wide primes that you can stick on smaller and lighter bodies. I was just asking as my Fuji friends rave about the "film look" that their pictures have. It made me very suspicious! :D

Yes I know that. What I was asking was can it be done by tweaking the RAW image in lightroom, etc (I think it can) and if so has someone tried for example replicating Velvia from the X trans sensor manually?

I wonder if there's a way to manually replicate the "Fuji" film look in lightroom.
That would be an interesting experiment.
Have any of you tried it?

Why not get a K-x, if you can find a close to mint one, with 1 or 2 (21mm ,40mm, 77mm) pancake lenses? You can also use your small M35 or M50 lenses on it. That thing with Limiteds you can bring everywhere. And low light capability is nothing to laugh at. It IS an old camera, but the sensor is still acceptably good.

No focus peaking though.

EZ Share Wifi SD card on Pentax K-X

I want to make my k-x dslr wifi compatible with an SD card. I have an option to use either a Transcend or EZ-Share. EZ Share is half the price of the Transcend but I don't know if it's compatible with my K-x. (I know the Transcend is)
I don't really care about the app and all that. I just want to transfer RAW files to my smarphone.
Does anyone have any experience with an EZ Share card on a K-X?
Thanks.

Thank you for the kind words Chas. :)
That photo was one of my first keepers. To be honest, it was luck! The spider was on the flower but as I was focusing in LV, the spider moved away from the flower. I was surprised, after checking the preview, that it had moved into one of the two points of light in the picture! And now that moment is captured forever (not really forever, but you get the point)!

Thanks Santoku. I just found out my father shot film back in the day too. He said it was a Canon camera but he was aquainted with Pentax. Cheers.

Haha! Eclectic is right! I had to shoot everything with a (many say akward) 50mm so I guess that's what it is.

Thanks.
The spider in the third one was definitely beginner's luck. ;)

I wanted to learn photography on a budget so I searched long and hard for a good dslr to learn photography on. Someone online pointed me in the direction of Pentax, especially the k-x. After devouring reviews online, I decided to get one. Luckily, I also had the chance to purchase the 50mm M/ 1.7 with it. I got a fantastic deal with a low shutter count (7k), bag, memory card, Eneloops, and two kit lenses for 175 U.S. dollars equivalent!
I immediately fell in love with the vintage 50mm's rendering and shooting with it has allowed me to learn so much.
I only know of 1 person in my whole circle of friends who has ever USED a Pentax camera (aside from the guy I bought it from) so this forum is basically the only place I can get info so I really, really value the time and effort that the people who run these forums put into their work.
Anyway, here are a few pictures I have taken over the last 2 months, downsized for Facebook upload.
