I don't think I've posted any, but like I say, it's a popular subject amongst glaswegian flickrites. Try this (flickr.com).

From Wikipedia: "Kibble Palace is a 19th century iron framed glasshouse, covering 2137 m2. It was constructed at its current location in 1873, but was originally designed and built by John Kibble for his home at Coulport on Loch Long in the 1860s. It was brought up the River Clyde by barge, to the Botanic Gardens where it was re-assembled and enlarged."
The Kibble has been a favourite spot for Glasgow shutterbugs since its 2006 refurbishment. Click the images for larger sizes and EXIF, etc. |

Although I didn't find the sharpening in your shots particularly obnoxious, I would try Smart Sharpen (instead of USM) set to 'Lens blur', start at 150% at 0.3 and adjust to taste.
300% at 0.3 does sound a trifle high.

It works for me - I'd normally look for a softer light, but this works for the reasons given by daacon and because there's no squint or blown highlights.

I had to laugh at this - a similar thing happened to me two weeks ago. I was shooting this sequence when a deer walked past me. I'm standing by an industrial estate in the middle of Scotland's largest city!
Of course, I'm shooting landscape with the 18-55 on. There's an 80-200 in my bag, but there's no point in even thinking about changing lenses. Below is a 100% crop - i won't be entering it in any contests.
Don't you think there's a certain maddening nonchalance in the way he's strolling along there...? |

I took this grab shot as a wedding party stopped in the Botanic Gardens here in Glasgow for photos. I thought I'd post for all the petrolheads here on Pentaxforums...

To me this image hints at violence, intimidation, even torture. The title doesn't seem to quite chime with this though. Am I reading too much?

dwinnert: lol - high praise indeed! 'preciate it.
There's good portraits and there's dull portraits - it doesn't matter what the age of the subject is. That's my view anyway.

thank you both for the nice comments!
blwnhr - this is just an opportunistic snap - this boy never, ever poses for photographs! It was just a question of positioning myself to make the most of the available light and waiting until his face is turned the right way.
I sometime set up off-camera flashes around the room. Fun examples here and here. Getting a decent shot is still akin to wildlife photography though! Thank goodness for digital - I would be financially ruined if I used 35mm...

I tried to bring a rather ordinary swan shot to life with a drastic crop - I wanted to emphasise the texture of the wing feathers. Click for larger sizes and EXIF (flickr.com) |

codiac2600 - lol! Skies like these are the exception rather than the rule in Scotland - I got soaked walking home a few hours after the last two shots were taken.
fletcherkane: I appreciate the feedback. These are amongst the first shots that I've 'shopped to any serious degree, so I may well have overdone it due to inexperience. I usually try to follow the 'less is more' principle, but it's difficult when the same photo looks washed out and dull in one monitor or browser and eye-popping in another.

When the sky is like this, you just have to take your camera for a walk at lunchtime! The first shot is from Monday, the ones with the reflections are from Tuesday.

The '540's little brother, the AF-360FGZ also has an totally horrible battery door. Having said that, this has caused no *real* problems so far.
Can one of you guys tell me if the '540 has a battery meter? I find the lack of one on the '360 a bit annoying.

I've got two modes:
general purpose: bright, -1 saturation, 0, 0 - same as novotel;
alcoholic still lives: (example here): bright, +2, +2, +2.
I would use +3 if I had a K10D - like the gentleman in Spinal Tap whose amplifier goes up to 11...

Why is it that, when you forget to close the zip, the camera *never* flies out of your bag while you're striding purposefully across your shag-pile carpeted floor to the front door? It always waits until you're *just* outside...

>> DAMN. I doubt my DS would have survived that.
You'd be surprised - I did exactly the same to my DL2. There is no mark or scratch anywhere on the body. Skylight didn't fare so well, though...

Dedicated buttons for controlling WB, ISO and Quality - a lá Nikon D200's 'Three Kings'.
Better metering wouldn't hurt either.

Or better still - I got one of those 3-year insurance thingies when I bought the camera - so if I can persuade some Jessops guy that it's malfunctioning, I walk home with a K110D... :-)

The problem seems to be lens- & battery charge- agnostic.
Lighting - typically indoors, with bounce or off-camera flash. I haven't been shooting outdoors a great deal recently.
AF mode - AF-S, typically spot sensor.
Bear in mind that the problem is not the typical DL/DS slow or 'hunting' AF - in this case the AF is locking on in a reasonable amount of time (relatively speaking ;-) and then disengaging *while the shutter release is held halfway down*. I believe the default behaviour on most DSLRs and other types of camera is for AF, once engaged, to remain locked until the shutter button is released - nicht wahr?
