This looks to be a nice and welcome lens to the line-up... I don’t care who developed it, I am glad to see Pentax creating new glass to support full frame! I am anxiously awaiting the much anticipated DFA * 85 and the rumored wide angle DFA * as well. This new 70-210 certainly isn’t cheap as I would prefer it in about the 800 USD range vs 1,000 plus. But hey, they gotta make money to develop new stuff...
If anything it makes the DFA * 70-200 look like a good value when sold for 1,600 USD.

I have shot some pretty good shots with my Sony Cyber-shot HX99, in fact I went on a business trip to Boston earlier this year... I had several nice shots with that even my iPhone 11 Pro Max wouldn’t have taken. The HX99 is nice because it is pocketable and shots 4K video as well but has a nice zoom range too.
I am debating when I go to San Francisco on business in November if I am taking my KP and 20-40 or am just saying good enough with the HX99 and my iPhone.

I second this... My pa has one, not a bad lens for the coin. Seriously punches well above it’s weight.

Awesome choice. The KP is an awesome camera. As I have said before, if I needed to sell most of my kit the last body to go would be my KP. (Yes, I would give up my K1-II and K3-II before the KP)

Honestly, the top LCD is nice to have BUT not enough of a reason not to consider the awesome KP.
I have a K1-II, KP and K3-II which I like all of them BUT for different reasons.
For the price to dollar ratio even after over one and a half years on the market the KP is a supremely capable crop camera. Truthfully more camera than most people will ever need, capable of amazing images from the 24 megapixel sensor crop sensor. (Which gives you two to three stops of better ISO for low light over my K3-II)
Many people would be surprised, if I experienced a hardship and needed to sell my equipment the body I would keep is my KP. Not because the K1-II and full frame aren’t awesome BUT for the bulk of my photography a capable somewhat compact crop camera serves my needs. Is the K1-II even better, you bet... Is it more than I need, likely and can I truly use “all” of it, nope...
Given what is on your list, I recommend the KP as it has the best low light performance and pairs awesome with a 20-40 or 16-85 or some of the awesome primes from the Limited line.

You have got most everything covered... If I were to make a suggestion it would be a DA * 300 F4 for telephoto, it blows the 55-300 away at 300mm. I can spend with the best of them!

I have had the pleasure of using/owning the following...
DA * 55mm - yes awesome lens worthy of the Star name... Handed up/down to my pa for all he has done for me when the DFA * 50mm arrived. I consider myself a nice son! It is awesome for his pair of K3-II’s. In my dads kit...
DA * 300mm - oh heck yes... World class lens that has delivered time and time again it truly is a Star. It has performed awesome even for wildlife for me. I have yet to exercise it well on FF, but I am looking forward to it. In my kit...
DFA * 50mm - might be my favorite piece of glass ever... Turns the K1-II into a world beating camera/lens combo. This combo takes on the best from Sony, Canon and Nikon and lives up to the Star series name. In my kit...
DFA * 70-200 - lives up to the Star series as well... Sharp across the frame wide open, quick focusing and built like a tank. Again lives up to the best from Sony, Canon or Nikon when mounted on crop or the K1-II. In my kit...
FA * 400 - what an awesome lens, that I have had the pleasure of using a few times. My pa over the years has gotten some incredible photos both film (PZ1-p/ZX-5n) and digital with his K10D/K100D and now his pair of K3-II’s... It is one lens I truly lust after in his kit. If Pentax ever does a prime DFA * 400, I will be all over it! In my dads kit...

Six blades is not ideal... However for the price, I can live with the compromise... I think the HD coating will improve an already good lens. I will sure share my thoughts!

And Clackers I am glad they started with the fast 50...
Truly a class leading 50 from an optics and build quality perspective.

In my K1-II/FF kit I have...
Rokinon 12mm Fisheye - great fisheye
Pentax DFA HD 28-105mm - phenomenal every day lens
Pentax FA HD 35mm - looking forward to a faster wide angle on pre-order
Pentax DFA* HD 50mm - truly a world class lens
Pentax DFA* HD 70-200mm - nearly as magnificent as the DFA * 50
Pentax DA* SMC 300 - awesome in FF mode for JPEG’s
On my radar is the upcoming DFA* HD 85mm and eventually the wide angle DFA* lens that is a ways out. I am also game for a nice DFA* 400mm F5.6 someday... I have resisted the DFA 150-450 due to size! I am in no rush but a FF TC would be nice as well. Granted I don’t have a FF kit that some of the folks on PF do but I got most everything covered.
In your case I think a DFA 28-105 is a good idea if you want an awesome walk around zoom. For a more standard view the DFA* 50 is hard to beat as well... Or maybe a telephoto is what you need the DFA* 70-200 is a gem too.

Yes my understanding was the PLM 55-300 HD is a radically different animal than the Screw Drive 55-300 HD... The screw drive model with WR and HD coating along with a re-skin is the same model they were selling 10 years ago. However, several years ago they updated it with a new “body” and HD coating... The PLM version came since with a new optical formula along with indexing (believe they call it that) like a couple years ago.
I should know I have the screw drive HD verison that came out like five years ago... It was because at the time I had a notion of a budget getting into this hobby. Opps, broke that rule!

All true... I am completely agree and am looking forward to adding it to my collection yet in 2019. For now the FA 35 HD will have to tie my over!

Glad to hear this and that you are enjoying the DFA 50 * via the Tokina 50 Opera on your Nikon system. This lens which was glued to my K1-II for the first several months is something to behold... I am back with the 28-105 on it but will likely swap it out. Pentax proved they still “got” it as a world class optical company with this piece of glass. In fact I have taken some awesome natural light portraits with it and anxiously await the upcoming DFA 85 *. Again thanks for the post and glad you are enjoying the world class DFA 50 *.

I wish I could say... I don’t own any of those pieces of glass yet... My FA 35 HD F2 is on preorder for my K1-II.
On the slightly wide side of the DFA 15-30, I have a 12mm Rokinon fisheye which is an awesome UWA/fisheye for the price... Yes it is manual focus but for what I invested in it along with focus confirmation/it’s intended usage for me it is good. I too do not want monster glass if it isn’t F1.4 or F2.8 telephoto stuff or like F4/F5.6 for super telephoto. This is the reason even with big sales I have avoided the tempting DFA 15-30 or even the more lust worthy DFA 150-450. I would prefer a slightly faster prime like my DA 300 * which is nice even on FF but if a DFA 400 F5.6 * ever appeared it would have my attention/ be bought. Ricoh also has one more FF super telephoto on the road map I am waiting for. In the meantime I am capped at 300mm on FF with my DA 300 * shooting JPEG’s as Pentax/Ricoh reccommends... Or I whip out one of my extremely capable crop bodies the K3-II or KP and say 450mm equivalence is just fine.

I agree with so many other people in this thread... As long as this didn’t take away from DFA 85 * and 70-200 F4 dev too much... I have wanted an FF compatible autofocus wider end prime since I got my mits on my K1-II. This will do fine until they do a DFA 35 * or other smaller than the DFA 15-30 primes. When paired with my Rokinon 12mm Fisheye although manual focus I will have some moderately fast wide FF glass for which I am happy about.

As I have mentioned in other threads... It is relatively fast and not too big... I am awaiting for the D FA * wide angle but for the next few years this will be great. My pre-order is in and I can’t wait to try it on my K1 II.

Glad to know it is good on a K1/K1 II. I have now pre-ordered!
400 bucks and it gives me a relatively fast wider angle than my D FA 50 and is even smaller... Sign me up... Looks like it has improved plastic/build quality to boot.
Still anxiously waiting on the D FA 85 later this year! Also anxiously awaiting the other single focus prime on the road map.
I think this minor update is a nice surprise despite what the DPR haters have to say.

Now knowing the HD 35mm FA F2 is real... I am going to have to put my money where my mouth is and give my K1 II another fast, excellent prime... I am still game for the DFA 85 this year... I also have my eye on the other wide angle they have road mapped for a million years from now to go with my fisheye 12mm Rokinon.
Will be preordering at 400 bucks, this is a good value... Plus will be lighter on the K1 II when I want a fast prime!

Sign me up for the new (ish) 35... My K1 needs a fast wiser angle prime aside of the DFA 50.

This too was a product I considered when I got my HX99... The Sony was 150 bucks more but also shot 4K and had a little extra resolution. I really took a good look at my latest test batch, on my 5K iMac (unforgiving) and was really impressed what a 1/2.3 sensor in decent lighting can deliver. I can’t wait to use it on a trip to Boston in a couple days. It is all I am taking... As much as I wanted to take the KP and 20-40 it isn’t gonna happen.

Well I have bought a few 1/2.3 sensor compacts over the years... The cheap ones under $200 dollars really won’t be that different and don’t seem to have changed much in the past five years... The megapixel race on compacts slowed down a bit after 2010 or thereabouts.
If you are buying one for some zoom that is understandable but many won’t even take as good of photos as your phone. You do get optical zoom but many times don’t even get full 1080p video...
Honestly, I bought a compact the other week it has a 1/2.3 sensor but it wasn’t cheap and handles RAW to boot. So obviously that is a very different scenario... I think the Sony DSC HX99 I got, handily out does my iPhone X. Has nice zoom range and shoots killer 4K video despite the small sensor size. From what I have seen punches above its weight. It is no crop or full frame killer but will give me better photos than my phone and easily fit in my pocket and cost less than half my last Pentax branded lens. I can live with that... In fact it is going to Boston on a work trip next week with me.
