Good luck though, they look great, I will keep a look out for any in the UK ( even the EU may not be an option now due to tax changes)

To be honest the moth detail photoes are what i am aiming to attempt in the future, but i like ALL of the images here and certainly see myself doing something a little less complex while i learn the ropes. I will go through the video and other advice tomorrow and will probably have a couple more questions, I hope thats ok?

Thank you everyone so far for your advice and contributions :D

Happy New Year everyone, sorry for delay we all got ill over Xmas and New Year - i never realised Macro was such a hornets nest!.Much of this talk here is beyond my level of understanding, though appreciated.

- i noticed the comments on learning styles with interest, I am dyslexic and unless i can use something practically it tends to not make sense, my brain just cannot absorb all the intricacies of aperture etc without me looking at videos, trying suggested small projects to learn a technique etc which is why i was leaning towards a cheap set up at first.

- regarding the 'type' of macro photography i want to do, its very much a cross between on the go and some in my garden, i may move on to bringing items in at some point but not right now.

- that image of the moth, is beautiful and what i imagined in my head i would like to produce, that level of detail that stops you being able to see what its actually come from is interesting to me, so narowing down kit to achieve that is probably what i need, though i suspect that cannot be done cheaply.

Are the below even worth considering?

Raynox DCR-150 Macro Snap-on Adapter with 49 mm Front: Amazon.co.uk: Camera & Photo

52mm Close-up Filter Kit,Fotover 4 Pieces Macro Filter: Amazon.co.uk: Camera & Photo

Continued Thanks all :)

wow thank you for all this feedback! late here so will have a proper think and get back to you with a couple of queries tomorrow. Re 'you will need a lens with an aperture ring to use them.' I assume my bog standard 55 kit lens and my 300 lens do not have this? Edit -just saw the reply above thanks

I do intend to consider a dedicated macro lens later, i just want to have a play around first and see if it is for me. I assume i will need a tripod even for using cheapo techniques like extension tubes?

Hi everyone, I am considering trying out macro photography and want to go the cheap route first but i am getting confused on my options. I have read that extension tubes are better that the little screw on lens kits you can get but just discovered there are issues if you want to try and use auto focus ( i am still learning so most of it is beyond me) I have a k70 with kit lens plus a 55-300 which hasnt been used yet. I have only tended to take quick auto shots out and about.

I saw this being advertisd here: Manual P-K Extension Tube Set (12mm, 20mm, 36mm) - $15 shipped! - PentaxForums.com

It seems to be what i am looking for but as the details about connections etc is beyond what i know, i am unsure! this set seems to be as 'auto' as you can get? does it mean i can use either of my lenses with it but i will need to sit down and understand how to set up a manual pic? or are there some simple settings etc i can use? is this above my best option and do i need to buy a 'manual' lens?

Sorry if this is all abit basic, but im being offered this or its equivalent as a Christmas present and dont know what to do.

Thanks

K-S2 good replacement for K-r?

Thanks everyone, this is really helpful - im ashamed to admit I popped into the sales to day, despite being in a medium sized city no one had a k-s2 to look at, eventually I found a k-s1 and k-50 at John Lewis and after all that I was surprised to find I really didn't like the weight and size of the k-s1 - im just used to a chunkier build after the k-r and to be honest im really clumsy, the disproportionate weight with a heavy lens on would cause me issues, so as the k-50 was at a knockdown price I ended up getting that!

I know its much older and I will miss the movable screen, but I just wasnt happy to buy a k-s2 without holding one and the k-s1 just didn't feel right.

Ive seen a macro lens there too Pentax SMC 50mm f/2.8 D-FA Macro Lens for £220 is this a good choice do you think? I will be mainly photographing plants but possibly some insects as well, I also saw a Pentax 50mm f/1.8 SMC DA Lens very cheap and a Pentax smc 35mm f/2.4 but if I understand correctly I wont really need these? and should be ok with the 55-300 another all purpose and the macro? or would one of those be great for night photography?

Thanks again...

K-S2 good replacement for K-r?

Hello,

I had a k-r that was always playing up with the shutter jamming, but overall I did like the camera and have a DA 55-300 lens as well, as such and because ive heard Pentax will take many old lens types and makes ive decided to try and stick with Pentax for my replacement ( the cost to fix the K-r was quoted at £400 by Jessops)

Im hoping to do some night photography and macro shots of plants, maybe some street photography but im very much an amateur. The K-r was my first DSLR and it didn't get a lot of use before the faults started - would the K-S2 be a good more up to date alternative? im hoping to get a body only to keep costs down and use the old small lens that came with the K-r and the 55-300, ive heard its small but im a woman with small hands so not concerned. Or would there be a better/cheaper alternative?

Also if anyone could recommend a set of lenses that could cover what I need above with a basic general lens for mucking about I would really appreciate it - to be honest the 55-300 was a panic buy as it was a good deal and im still unsure what its best for!

Many Thanks
