Thinking of Making a switch away from Pentax. is it right or just gear envy?

Im not too worried about losing the weather sealed aspect of the body as my previous sigma lens was not weather resistant anyways and honestly not a huge fan of shooting the rain. And with only one lens I won't be changing lenses so dust doesn't concern me to much.

I've played with the menu and it doesn't bother me. I heard all about it but too me the layout is similar to pentax. All menus look the same too me. I'm excited to play around with the eye again well.

My membership expires at the end of the month so off to the bottom no one cares forums now

I got the A7ii and 24-105mm

every brand has their pros and cons. I am sure the pentaxians here will list a million reasons why sony is shit and how my old k70 was and is better than the sony I have changed too. Photography is a long life journey and I am young and must go through my own growing pains and own photography discovery. I liked the look and feel of the a7ii and I definitively like whats up the chain like the a9 and a7riii. When I looked at full frame options I looked at the k1 and decided it wasnt the upgrade I wanted. It's the same reason I didn't look at the sony apsc cameras. I had a great apsc camera already. I feel now making the switch to be less loyal to any one brand. I think you get stuck thinking you need or want to be a pentaxian and live and die by the brand. Maybe I shoot sony for a while and come back or maybe Canon will come out with the next future of the camera and will hop there for a bit. Maybe cellphones will get so good that I may drop the whole slr system for a while. Just feels good to not feel guilty about trying something else, I know the pentax group will defend the brand till its death.

I do agree there, progression from the lower models was minimal. A7r to a7rii. Time will tell. If anything switching so far has made me feel less connected to one brand which makes it easier to see myself changing companies as my photography grows and goes through different phases. I did feel a bit protective being that I thought I must stay with pentax. but its like a tv, nobody thinks much about changing tv's but when it comes to cameras there are such loyalties and cultures behind each camera.

If I all of sudden get into wildlife and sports photography I am sure I'll debate leaving sony for something else. Like many people said, its a tool to get the shots you want. photo is all that matters.

As for lenses I did opt to pay a bit more for quality, getting the 24-105mm which is sonys latest lenses will newest af motors and optics. Hopefully this will set me up for the next few bodies at least.

I am looking forward to seeing what the k3iii will be like. Think this will show more is pentax means progress or not. k3ii to k3iii should show a much larger growth than the k1 to k1ii.

well sold of my k70 body and now I have nothing left from Pentax but some extension tubes.

selling it off gave me mixed emotions. I sold all the perks of the camera and omitted all the down sides. I have learnt a lot with pentax and I wouldnt be were I am now if it werent for Pentax loading up entry level cameras with full functions. Most d3300 dont have half the befores the k50 and k70 have. But my journey continues and I am now a sony shooter. I will learn with this new set up and hopefully stay away from buying more than I need. The real piece of mind is now that cameras are digital, they will always have an expiry date and I know for fact I will have a new camera at some point after the sony and who knows which camera it will be. I applaud the loyalty but at the end of the day its a camera and maybe when pentax makes a camera worthy of coming back to I will.

After the released of new k1ii, I feel quite good about changing systems. It just shows no progress. will have to wait and see the reviews.

No card slot on my computer. So I have to go find the micro USB wire and grab the camera and get them all hooked up. Maybe I just invest in a USB to sd card reader haha. Probably way easier.

What If the future is not in the technology but the software.

No one can argue that any pentax is better than a cell phone sensor. Yet phones continue to replace cameras because I think the software is better and people are creating fun apps.

Its crazy to think that all these cameras from all these brands are so good now yet they sync so poorly with cell phones and social media and all that.

Create an amazing camera with great software and let people create software too improve the tech. Imagine if someone could develop a free source app that could bring pentax af into the future. Sure some af issue may be mechanical limitations.

Sometimes dslr and mirorless seem like such dated technology.

Pentax should become the first camera with integrated android or something to allow up and coming software geniuses to push the tech into the future.

They need to do something to differentiate themselves to stay relevant

Got my A7ii in the mail this week and on the waiting list for the 24-105mm f4.

So far obviously cant give a good review. Body is much smaller but weight is the same.

For me I am most excited to have made the decision to downsize my kit. Just go simple. one lens for now and focus and just taking shots. Obviously I could have done the same with the k70 (which apparently nobody wants to buy. Re-sellers here have offered me £200).

Part of photography is going through a learning curve and buying equipment, selling equipment and making wrong choices. If every company offered the same thing and if they all cost the same then it just wouldn't be fun. Pentax do make good cameras. But despite weather sealing and robust bodies, it didnt prevent my k50 from suffering the aperture problem after 27k shutter clicks. So Pentax isnt perfect either.

Only time will tell if I have made the long term decision. I wouldnt say it is right or wrong. it is a journey I must go on. At the end of the day I want to improve my photography but also as time goes on my interest shift. I put loads of money into lenses thinking I needed them and I didn't. Sure every once in a while a fish eye is fun. But when I am out running around london with one lens it was not the one I would grab.

My decision is to go one lens one body for the next while and why not go full-frame. sure APSc has come along way and I have some beautiful prints from my sensor, but I have an opportunity to explore full frame and gain all of the above.

a final reason, I am excited is for the future. I have bought the A7ii for what I can afford and for my needs, but seeing the new Sony cameras coming out is exciting. Sure it could go bust or sony could sell it off or decide to move on. Even pentax can go out of business. But I am excited that I don't have to dream. or spend time on rumour forums speculating the next k3iii or the k1ii or if mirorless is coming. I already know whats coming, it's already out A9, A7riii. Sure I can't afford it but it is exciting seeing what will be second hand down the road or what I may be able to afford.

At the end of the day a photo is a photo and all the specs in the world don't matter. It's your intentions, you passion, your enthusiasm and so much more. My photography may not change, but my excitement has and if down the road Pentax comes out with some outstanding gear then I'll be first in line to come back.

Now if someone who just buy the rest of my Pentax gear. Nobody in the UK wants any of it. Selling my k70 for almost £200 off market price and not one person has messaged me. Just not a desired item

New they come in at similar prices. A7ii + 24-105 is about £2K new while the Pentax k1 + 28-105 comes in around £1800-2000.

At the moment I wont buy used unless its from somewhere that will offer a warranty. After getting the 15mm limited used and decentered, just a waste of money if you cant be sure on the quality.

arguments can be made for either side being better, guess it depends which side of the fence you stand on. The way I see it, at the end of the day it's aging technology as soon as it is released and I doubt this will be the only time I change systems. In a few years I may move on to something else.

What's missing now from my kit is almost everything. Sold off almost all.

Down sizing kit to one body one lens. A7ii with 24-108.

Realised I have loads of lenses I don't use and I get tired of changing lenses especially when I'm travelling and every year my bag gets heavier.

Simplifying the kit. Lighter. Focus more and just enjoying the shots.

I agree with all your points. I also question very often our need for new toys and technology. Not just cameras, but cellphones and laptops and everything. A new computer means you could edit faster and maybe in 4k, but it won't improve your photography. I also agree that spending money on an experience will always be worth more than the gear. I have recently been going through old photos from Nepal shot on a point and shoot 5 years ago, and sure you can pixel peep as much or edit that much, but there are still some great shots when the light was good. Even managed to swtich a few jpegs into a pano I never consider before in the past.

So yes all is true. Will Sony make me a better photographer, no. Will it be a tough adjustment, yes. I am sure I'll miss things and I am in no rush to switch. Selling off my lenses I don't use anyways, just collecting dust. My only consideration of selling now versus later, is at the moment I can still get value for what I have. Which means switching wont cost me much or anything at the moment. Down the road on a new body sure, but that will be the same even if I stay with Pentax.

Did any one see the TheCameraStoreTV video on youtube for the best and worst of 2017. I thought it was a good video and the best part was not when he said the KP was the second worst camera released in 2017, it was the fact he mentioned Pentaxians and said he would most likely get a lot of back lash for bringing the KP up on the worst list. Pentax are a good group of people and very loyal, I bet more companies wish they had a group like that.

curious why the switch. My fear would be the A7 wont be an improvement from the k70, and I am far from affording the A7rii or A7iii which seem to have the much improved AF specs.

Happy with the switch?

whats your experience going from Pentax to A7. I would imagine K70 to A7 wouldn't be much change, other than full frame. Is the AF much different. Would be curious to know insights on this. I would image k70 to A7Rii would be quite the change.

---------- Post added 12-31-17 at 07:53 AM ----------

Do you like the Sony system so far. At the moment the a7 and even a7ii are quite well priced here in the UK, I know they are older systems but cheaper than still a new or used 5dIII,

have you enjoyed the switch?

---------- Post added 12-31-17 at 08:03 AM ----------

weather resistance is a nice feature, but to be honest I don't have weather resistant lenses anyways. And generally if it's raining, I usually dont go out. Did encounter some snow recently so i did have to cover the camera up but it doesnt happen often here in the UK, more rain for where I am living.

Other than just equipment I have been doing some soul searching for what I want my photography to mean and what I want to do with it, also seeing what system I need to accomplish those goals. Who knows

Thanks for the info. I suppose at the end of the day gear is gear and only small differences appear between different companies. New equipment and new glass won't turn me into a better photographer and the money probably could be spend elsewhere. I am for starters selling lenses and stuff that I barely use and probably will never use. Take that money and use it somewhere else.

I think as well I have to go through natural growing pains I suppose and in 40 years we may not know who is still around and who wont be. Maybe some new company will revolutionize the industry and we may just realize a cellphone is the best option.

First thing is trip to the camera store to have a little hands on experience and actually touch and hold the items and see how I feel after that.

The worst thing to leave Pentax will be the forum. I have learnt a lot here and everyone has been very helpful. I mean until I actually sell my k70 I am not gone yet. I am also only going to buy something I can have a go at first. Since buying a decentered 15mm lens recently and the unavailability of decent priced Pentax items, I am tired of trying to buy second hand items online hoping they will be fine. Unfortunately for me if I am spending 2k-3k over the next year or so on a new system I do have to look at it as an investment.

If I bought for now I think I would lean towards the 5diii. Proven body even for it's age, well built. better AF and other specs. Would have access to Canon glass which is a bit more accessible here in the UK. But it doesn't solve the size problem. Glass and camera body will be much larger than I have now with a k70. Not sure it will be as travel friendly as I would like.

Until I actually handle future cameras and see how I feel when the time comes I am not truly gone, as aslways also still figuring out what kind of photographer I am and what I want to shoot. I am kind of a floater at the moment as I don't feel I have much subject matter in my current location. Going to see if anyone at my camera club has a system I can borrow and try.

Funny you mention Sony, I have decided to sell all my gear, even though I just got new lenses and will hopefully be making the switch to Sony. After getting the Tamron 70-200mm I really realized how heavy it can get and I want to go lighter and more compact. I also keep buying different lenses likes 50mm, 15mm, 28mm and find I never use them much or at all. I just really want a decent wide for landscape and a decent lighter zoom for landscape/everything else.

I have also really been thinking of whats to come, if I will always be behind the game, buying older system when the price comes down or second hand systems, then I want to put myself in a situation where good glass can just move from body to body while still improving. I look at Sony or Canon and if I went with a 5DIII or Sony A7II for what I can afford, I can already see a progression in a year or so as the next body starts to decrease in price (5D4 or Sony A7Rii & eventually A7Riii)

at the moment I dont see the KP as the next body for me, the K3iii is a rumour and the K1 would still mean a complete system change and new glass plus less compact like Canon.

Since I don't have money to switch systems every year, I am not a pro and still learning, I am thinking of it as an investment and I think Sony will be a better investment at the moment, They are already leading the way for mirrorless and I know the future at the moment looks good A7Riii and A9. who knows what they release next year and I could be set for the next decade.

I couldnt have asked for a better system to teach me about photography. The K50 taught me so much and had so many features that other entry level cameras only dream of, and because of that I think I am more knowledgable then I am had I been using another system. But a few years down the road things change.

So at the moment, selling gear and looking at the A7II, FE16-35 & FE70-200mm and that's it. and obviously a few extra batteries. Then maybe in two years get the A7Riii. I know every system has it pros and cons and that understandable. But loking at future models already released and the direction they are going and sony seems to be a leader in mirorless and the next move.

But first need to get some cash back from current gear
