Original Q-style or MX-1 stype modern camera?

The MX-1 (and Q-S1) have modern BSI sensors (not to mention bigger/much better than your original Q). Sensor technology hasn't changed all that much in the recent few years, so camera makers are resorting to processing as a means to improve RAW files (in Pentax's case, an "accelerator chip"). That's the only thing one would get from a more modern camera in those styles, along with maybe different controls and/or a better JPEG engine. And of course, better video.
I wouldn't worry at all about using those cameras nowadays for a nice compact solution - unless you worry about the status of using a camera that is not the latest... and if you worried about status you wouldn't shoot Pentax anyway :)

Aside from the flip out LCD, there are no features on the KS2 which aren't either native, improved, or easily added in the K3. The only feature youd have to add is wifi, if you need it, and with the price of Toshiba wifi SD cards these days, you could add wifi to a K3 for about $15 more than a plain SD card of equal capacity.

Unless you really want an articulating LCD, the K3 is the better buy. Grab a good used 18-135WR and you'll be well heeled to learn the use of a DSLR. You could even sell the 18-55 and add a little cash and get a nice DA 50mm or DA 35mm prime to add to your kit.

I started with a K30 in 2012, and picked up a K3 in 2016. While I love my K30, the K3 is more solid in my hands and more intuitive to control on the fly. I think youd be well served with either purchase, in the short term, but in the longer term, the K3 is a far better value and a more capable platform on which to build your skills.

knowledge, skill and experience

those factors may make you a better photographer regardless of your equipment

Welcome to the Forums. I think all of us when we were new to Pentax went through the same issue. When I decided to purchase a DSLR it came down to 3 models the K-S2, K-70 andthe K-3 II. The K-S2 and K-70 are very similar physically. But feature wise the K-70 is leaps and bounds beyond the K-S2 and they both have articulating screens.

The K-3’s are flagships which means you are getting superior build quality. Also additional features such as dual sd card slots and an optional battery grip. They also have a better auto-focus system. Personally it was the dual sd cards and battery grip that sold me on the K-3 II. I can’t count the number of times I left the sd card in my computer after downloading images. Thank god for the second card. Then the battery grip is a great feature especially when using heavier lenses though it is always on my camera regardless of what lens I am shooting.

My recommendation would be the K-3. Also you should look at The K-70 instead of the K-S2. You should make your choice based on the camera bodies features and not which lens is attached because it is only one lens that can be easily replaced or upgraded. Also as many have said lenses are very important as you grow your skills. The 17-50 is a very good lens which I own but there are many people who swear by the 18-55 kit lens. But if I were you I would look for a body with the 18-135 which is a great walk around lens.

The DA 40mm 2.8 makes an excellent multi purpose body cap.

Lack of K-3 II Body Cap

I have no idea where my K-3II body cap is, as I’ve never actively used a body cap with any camera. It just seems like an extra unnecessary step when changing lenses or putting the camera away after use - so my body cap tends to be the last lens that I used, then I’ll change it for the appropriate lens on next use. As many here probably also have, I use a lens change technique that seems to minimises the time that the camera throat is open and the bayonet end of the lens is uncovered.

Which lens option for a new K-70?

No question... 18-135, which I think is kitted with the K70. If a 16-85 was kitted it would get the nod, however I know the K70 only comes a few ways kitted.

I have taken a great plenty shots with the gen 1, 18-55 not a bad lens but optically not on the same planet as the 18-135 (dad just got and loves) or the 16-85.

Spend the extra for the better lens upfront.

Definitely the 18-135mm if you can afford it. The IQ is a little better, you get faster and quieter AF, and the added versatility.

I would follow Adam's advice for the DA18-135mm. It is a relatively small light lens, lighter than the DA16-85mm. The DA16-85mm is said to be better IQ however.
If this is you first lens, go for the simple DA18-135mm. I shoot primes, but I continue to use the DA18-135mm as my all-around WR lens.
My 5 cents.

I just switched (and, yes, I consider it an upgrade) from the K-5 IIs to the K-70 2 weeks ago and I couldn't be happier. I wrote down my likes and dislikes in this post Just a few initial thoughts - PentaxForums.com

I literally did not encounter any problems, still getting used to the different menus but that's only a matter of time. Mounting and using non-automatic lenses works just like it did on my other Pentax bodies - I've got a lovely Revuenon 55mm/f1.2 that works pretty darned well on the K-70.

Here's a shot in my own backyard this morning with the Tamron 90mm macro this morning:

Aperture Block / Shutter Failure

It's not our job to understand and fix the problem. That's fully on Pentax.

It's also ridiculous to say anything more than 500 shots a year is heavy use and not suitable for a consumer device. Where is that warning in the manual.

You've got a rugged weather sealed camera, that could fail because of a design/manufacturing component fault from within two years of ownership.

Hello Pentax, where are you and what are you doing about it?

silence...

Hello, Rick, and welcome to the forums - glad you could join us.

You certainly have a few years' experience!

Regarding the perpetual drizzle, I'm from the North East of England... I've a hunch we invented drizzle and exported it to other parts of the world :p

Looking forward to your involvement here :)

Hi from Australia Rick. Welcome to the Pentax forums, and Pentax equipment. The K-50 is a very good weather sealed body, but please make sure you team it with a weather sealed lens too !! :D Good to have you aboard.:)
