Missed the moment to catch the face of the dancer walkin on his hands. and the head on the left which I could not avoid. But kept it because of the emotion. |

Since the descriptions in the links are not so detailed I would like to share my experience based on descriptions and some simple geometry calculations and techniques.
first I draw a circle on cardboard with pair of compasses (if this is the right name for the tool in English) with the width of the lens diameter. I measured the distance between the two compasses to fit the half of the diameter. Then drеw a second circle from the same center with the half of the radius of the first one and divided one mm from the radius. That's because I decided to use F2 aperture and didn't want the ages of the shape to go outside the aperture but in the same time to get maximum field of light for the main object. Then I drew a straight line from the center and drew the right half of the shape. then again with the pair of compasses measured where the points of angles in the shape from the left side should be by crossing the partial circle of the distance from the center and the distance from the upper point of the straight line. then I drew by hand the curves and got almost symmetrical picture with maximum affordable size without going outside of the metric aperture size.
Then I carefully cut the shape with an utility knife painted it in black and put it on the filter thread to fix it to the lens.
the main Idea is to measure the maximum width of the shape by dividing the lens width by the aperture number and subtracting one millimeter from that width for safety. I hope this will be helpful in guiding how large the shape can be before cutting it :)

Thanks for hosting and judging this interesting challenge Don. Congrats for the wining image Andy! I would choose the same because of the Idea to put in the picture a key (in low key) and locks as a shaped bokeh. Very conceptual!
As for the shape I made for this challenge I intend to use it in a project and if it is successful I'll share it.
Fast healing UncleVanya! I myself just recovered from a two week sickness.

Thanks. I cut it out with a utility knife on plain card stock then colored it black with a marker.
When set the composite mode to bright and set the exposure to -1 on a dark background I get clear bokeh without unwanted fragments on the main picture. I used to do it this way and like results but I may try your way some day:)

Hello friends. Thank you for the patience with my delayed judging.
Here it is:
1. djb47 - very clean picture of lights of the candle and some backlights in the bokeh. I like the smooth transition across the light levels displayed here. The bokeh compliments the main subject being the same color as the main light. Perfect composition.
2. Vaskebjorn - Here, on my opinion, the light is displayed as an instrument to show colors. the colors are bright and vivid which for me means that the light is very well used for its purpose.
3. Andy58 - Here the light is used to give a shape, texture and dimension to the picture by using dropped shadows. Black and white is therefore a good choice for that composition. it makes it stronger.
4. noelcmn - An example for using backlight to form a silhouette. I like the gentle yelow glow of the cloudy sky.
And my picture - out of contest. I'm glad I managed to do it at all because of a very nasty sickness last two weeks which I hope is ending now.
Not much pictures this challenge but very different approach for the subject and a high level of of performance. The choice is hard to be made therefor.
And the winner this week is djb47's candle . Congrats Don!
Second place goes to Richard's tulip
And the third is shared betwееn Andy and Noel.

I've searched the sub-forum and didn't find a thread about this kind of pictures. And I think this technique deserves a separate thread. So here it is.
I hope you like it and share your pictures here.

If I may suggest few simple tricks for better results
1. shoot on live view= this way by taking the second shot you can orientate what will be the result.
2. choose a clear and if possible dark background for the first shot . this way you can add clear picture to it by the second shot (the first picture here is made this way)
3. lower the exposurе for the second shot about 1 stop. this way the first image will look clear.
4. try to take the second image with manual focus and defocus it.
I hope to see your pictures here soon:)

and something from last evening
The name of the group is "Chanove". Chans - bronze cattle bells. There is a popular belief that their ringing drives away evil. The idea of the composition is that dancers look like clinking bels.

The last among equals :D (in this case me) :D
p.s. the picture is taken on the tripod with 12 sec. shutter delay. I pushed the shutter button so technically I made the shot.

Sorry for the delay, friends!
I'm really buzzy this week, and the high key is not the strongest aspect in my photography=
Shortly - My judging is:
1. place goes to Noels spider - I really like the combination of low contrast and great sharpness and detail here.
2. place is for Tom's sunrise seascape. the gentle light colors of the picture are what I like here.
H.M to all the others, except me as judge.
Thank you all for participation and to Don for hosting challenges!

Two minutes to midnight
This in camera composite picture was taken less then two minutes before the start of this weeks challenge and is sort of transition from the pattern challenge to this one. Especially if you look closer.
Like this
If it doesn't qualify I still would like to share it for the idea.
