This is Bregagh road, Northern Ireland. Some will recognise it as Kings road from Game of Thrones.

I had the pleasure of being there while it wasn't full of tourists and blocked up by coaches. Mind you, I had to go there at 5am and stake my claim to a spot before others showed up but it has been one of my favourite photography memories to date. Hope you like

Taken at Llyn Padarn in the Snowdonia mountain range. As I was waiting for the sunrise on a rainy morning the sky briefly lit up in purple complimenting the welsh mountain slate underfoot. This light is known as the belt of Venus or antitwilight arch and is an atmospheric phenomenon visible during civil twilight. To the right you can see the lights from nearby Llanberis.

Thanks to the host for taking the time to set up this image of the week thread.

This is Llandwyn island on Anglesey, North Wales at 2am with the moon lighting the path to 'Twr Mawr'. It's one of my favourite places in the world and excuse me for using this word but it is just a magical place to be. There are wild horses roaming, old ruins, interesting architecture, Geology that has people visiting worldwide and just out of shot you get a full view of the Snowdonia mountain range. The place is steeped in religious history to boot.

EXIF: original shot was taken at ISO3200 - f2.8 - 25secs with an aligned image of the milkyway after the moon had set taken at ISO3200 - f2.8 - 30sec. The 2 images were blended together using photoshop

I dont follow the video after the shots are aligned but it is where I started off and it is a good way of doing it but it is an automated process that leaves you with little control

the problem with this automated way is that if you have an ugly cloud or something that you don't want to show in one of the pictures, you will be able to see it in the final version. I do it a bit differently, I align the photos so I have, say 5 of the same type of shots on a layer each and change the opacity of each layer in a specific way so that each file shows through.

The way to do this is giving each successive layer a decreasing opacity. So the bottom layer will be 100% opacity the next will have 50%, the next 33%, then 25%, 20% and so on. this shows all layers equally and has the same affect as median stacking, the difference is, I can pu a mask on each layer and balck out the parts I don't want from each picture, If there is an ugly cloud on one of them, mask the cloud in black and it's gone.

Sorryu if my explanation is poor

Thank you for your comments. I'd say a beginner can absolutely do the processes I have here, this is only my second astrophotography attempt, (the first attempt the less said the better lol), I taught myself through watching plenty of youtube videos.

So when I'm talking about the same shot taken over and over at different ISO's I'm talking mostly about manual median stacking. Ill take an image like the one below - this is the base image for the picture I posted above - I think the setting were 25sec - ISO3200 - f2.8, and I'll retake exactly the same shot 5+ times. Having a steady tripod is very important here so that you don't have to reposition the photos in post processing.

You convert the layers into a smart object and then set the stack to Median. This makes each picture equally visible (say there is 5 shots, then each picture will be visible 20%) this massively decreases the noise. It can be very time consuming but I just love post processing. If I can spend 5 hours making one image look exactly how I want it to look, I'm a happy bunny :-)

Taken last Tuesday at 12.30am on Anglesey

South Stack lighthouse under a starlit sky.

Sitting here in the shadow of the headland you will see a hundred satellites, shooting stars, meteors and planes passing by, as the lighthouse and the distant lights of Dublin keep you company in the darkness.

I was using a Pentax K-1 with 15-30DFA lens

Post production:

The image is essentially 1 shot but taken multiple times at varying ISO's and shutter speeds, most of them were only used to control the noise as the ISO went as high as 12,800

I'm looking for any shutter speed right now, playing around with any and all setting but I do know that the shots can overlap. I'm thinking of around 1/8-1 sec in daylight and 15-25 sec for night shots

---------- Post added 05-20-17 at 12:36 AM ----------

I bought quite a fast card I think, good advice on turning the noise reduction and lens correction though as these can be done post, Never thought to do this thank you

---------- Post added 05-20-17 at 12:38 AM ----------

Thank you that's great advice, never really wanted to go into crop mode but might have to give this method a go thank you

---------- Post added 05-20-17 at 12:40 AM ----------

If I used a big stopper could I realistically use this method in daylight also?

---------- Post added 05-20-17 at 12:41 AM ----------

Ah, I'm using 2 cards, I can see this being a problem, thank you

Hi everyone, has anyone had a go at doing some timelapse with the k-1 using the built in intervalometer. I've given a few tries at different settings and the best I have so far isn't quite up to scratch. I was able to get a 500 shot at 3 second intervals without the buffer catching up but the odd shot did seem a little off time to me.

I had to shoot in only Jpeg to achieve this. I was wondering if any of you had found a better setting that means I can shoot in Raw somewhere between 2-5 second intervals without the buffer ruining the shot. I will be shooting at night as well so I'm not sure if this comes into play.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Rob

True, It was a little scary at the time. More so becuase of the huge chunks of glacier swilling around us. My missus is only 5ft as well so she nearly had to swim out the way lol

Yeah I tried johnsons, that's who its gone to. Yeah I was quite surprised if I'm honest, it was submerged for a second if not less as I saw it happening and reacted quickly. I thought the weatherproofing would have done a little something.

Cheers mate. Won't be too long hopefully

Apparently a common thing in Iceland these rogue waves. We were standing there with the waves just lapping the bottom of the tripod for 15 minutes happily taking photos, next minute myself and a bunch of cameramen around were almost waist deep in water, I wasn't lucky enough to have my camera to hand when it hit like the others

Hello everyone and goodbye for a little while.

I've only just joined this site after finally getting my hands on my first DSLR (and first camera as a matter of fact), the Pentax K-1 with a 15-30mm lens. I saved up all year by selling prints from my 14mp sony bridge I borrowed from a family member and as soon as I started using the Pentax knew I had made the right decision.

However after less than 3 weeks since acquiring my dream camera it is gone. I was taken out by a rouge wave and the camera and lens got submerged. I got the news from the camera shop today that the camera is beyond economical repair and the lens will need to be shipped off to Europe for an estimate/repair.

Where was your insurance you ask? Well I thought I had it, I honestly did, I set it up and everything was confirmed, the rouge wave hit me and the very next day I got a letter through the post saying that the insurance was set up and will be active as of 2 days later. I feel like a right doughnut for missing this point and honestly thought I had confirmed with them that the insurance was now set...but we live and learn. I will be saving up for a new K-1 and lens as in my short time using it I fell in love with how it worked and the pictures it helped produce.

I will see you all soon, enjoy your photography and for the love of god look after your cameras.

Rob

Sure. They're all in North Wales. The lighthouse is South stack on Anglesey. Very popular tourist attraction. The Wintery one is a Huge rock formation called Castell-Y-Gwynt (Castle of the winds) and is perched on top of Wales' 6th highest peak and the tree picture is LLyn Padarn in the Snowdonia mountain range. This tree is a very photographed tree and the surrounding area is just lovely

Thank you mate. I've a lot to learn but I'm enjoying every minute so far.

So many reasons. I was choosing between the D810 and the Pentax and it took me a long time to decide.

There are so many reasons I chose the pentax. No AA filter, In built VR, astrotracer (Not a deal breaker but seemed like a nice trick), excellent Weatherproofing (I will run headlong into waves to get a good shot so this is important), tilting screen (I'm used to this feature and it just makes photography more enjoyable), I could go on...

Hi there, thank you for your comments. The lighthouse is a bunch of photos merged to get the light flowing across the rocks with one of the shots taken at a quicker shutter speed. I used that shot for the beam. A benefit to this type of process is that I can use high ISO shots as the merging process I use reduces noise significantly.

It's a bit hard to tell without zooming in but the light beam is a bit more noisy than the rest of the photo as a result. I have been looking into timing my shots so that I can merge a group of photos with the light beam in the same position so I can cut down the noise across board

Not sure if all of this made sense as my technical terms may be wrong as I'm still learning

Just upgraded to pentax after a long time of using a Sony Nex-5. I loved the camera but the limitations were huge especially as I regularly sell A0 size prints (Terrible low light performance, 14mp sensor, crop frame)

I've been practicing for a couple of weeks now and starting to get used to the features and settings and would be grateful for some feedback to some images I have been working on.

Thanks in advance

Nit picking is great thank you. It was shot at 2.8. In retrospect I could have used a wider aperture to ensure the crisp detail was there

Cheers mate. I used the Pentax 15-30 for the lighthouse and the 28-105 for the wave. The lighthouse was taken at the widest focal length and I couldn't be happier with the way the lens handles it

Thank you mate. I love it. Still getting used to the settings and I keep randomly putting it into bracketed mode for some reason but apart from that it's a great camera. The 15-30 is a really great lens, I haven't got a lot of comparison but I like the way it handles ultra wide shots.

Hi everyone,

I posted asking for some lens advice a few weeks back about what I should get for my first DSLR, the Pentax K-1 and have eventually decided on the 28-105 and the 15-30 lenses. Someone mentioned that I should post the results here when I get some shots off so here is some work I have been doing since then. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. I just want to add that I've tried the astrotracer a couple of times with not much luck as of yet so it will be a bit longer before I have any decent astrophotography to post. Hope you like
