Thanks! This is about as close to sinister/foreboding as I could make a flower pic get without hunting down one of those rotten flesh-smelling giants or something...

Shot at 55mm ISO 100 with a Raynox DCR-150 1.5x close-up filter using on-camera flash and a little cloth diffuser. Nice big flower, no idea what it's called!

Decent L-plate/bracket for K-70?

Thanks Shitaku, looks like in addition to cutting out the vertical part to make room for the cable release you'd have to cut the horizontal part to access the battery door. Also I hadn't considered the problem with the flip out screen.

I was out the other evening using a tripod and paid attention to whether using the ball head's 90 degree option for vertical mode was really annoying enough to justify the trade-offs of these L brackets, and I think I found that it's not, at least for me. Think I'll stick with what I have.

Thanks very much for the ideas, great people here on this forum!

I was out walking in my neighborhood when it was threatening rain and saw these two crows sitting on a lamp post. After getting a couple of throwaway shots of two crows on a lamp post, I happened to switch to a fast shutter speed just before they took off. I thought the unconventional wing positions were interesting. I didn't notice the lamp's position against a light spot in the clouds until later (that's not a post edit).

How useful is K-70 flip screen?

Good point Philip. I'm not very portrait-centric I guess. Still haven't figured out what aspect ratios I like, and I keep getting my composure wrong. What would really be cool is if they could figure out how to make the screen tilt up, as well as slide (not swing) out and then fully articulate. That way you wouldn't have to rotate the thing past 90 degrees after flipping it out. I can never remember which way to rotate it, and end up forcing it a little the wrong way sometimes. Seems a little fragile but it's probably stronger than it feels.

Anyone break it yet???

I'm finding that nearly every time I want to use the flip out screen on the K-70 it's to look down on the camera from above, and then I don't feel like swinging it out then flipping it around, and end up just crouching. I'd actually prefer a screen that just rotates up like a lot of other cameras have, in one motion. I imagine that would be more robust as well; I'm always a little nervous when the screen is hanging off to the side like that.

I suppose it would be useful to have the extra flexibility for awkward positions on a tripod (macro) but I only just bought a macro-worthy tripod and haven't experimented much.

"Off" is a good description. Those white K-30s and K-50s do look cool (from photos at least, never held one), I'd probably have gone with that if it were available. The nice thing about black is that you know what you're getting even if you can't get your hands on one in the store (which for Pentax is apparently just about always).

Seems kind of foolish thinking so much about equipment aesthetics, but on the other hand this photography thing is all about making things that are pleasing to the eye, right?!

Oh and if you do pick up a K-70, don't worry, you can disable that glowing ring around the shutter release button. Unless you're into that kind of thing. I was panicked for about 5 minutes before I discovered I could turn it off.

K-70 rear adjustment wheel acting up after fog

Thanks very much Adam, Steve, Jeff.

I've had the camera since January, only taken about 4000 shots (started out slow), but spending pretty much all my time in Av TAv and M modes (using that wheel a lot). The thing I'm worried about is that, if I send it in for warranty repair or replacement it DEFINITELY will not display this problem when they test it. I've spent like 10 hours shooting in dry conditions after those fog incidents with no problems. I don't have any experience with Ricoh's CS but I'd rather not give up time with my only camera body only to be told I'm SOL. I don't imaging I can get them to go for a two-hour walk in the fog then test!!!!

Adam: I do indeed have instant view mode enabled (1 sec). I'm not accidentally zooming in on my last shot instead of changing aperture, if that's what your intimating. Or is there something else I'm not considering? Pretty much every time the problem has occurred I noticed the lack of response and power cycled before any shutter releases. The wheel wouldn't respond within the menus either.

Thanks,
Jamin

K-70 rear adjustment wheel acting up after fog

While I'm posting things, thought I'd share something annoying I noticed during a recent vacation trip. I spent a couple of nights shooting on a foggy beach (not getting salt splashed or anything, just humid) and the next day after each time, the rear adjustment wheel (aperture, etc.) sometimes wouldn't work. Each time power cycling fixed the issue temporarily. After some time in dryer air the problem went away.

I'm perplexed. The fact that powering off/on fixed things would suggest something more electronic than just a wet wheel-to-sensor connection, but it on the other hand I've only seen this after getting it damp. Also, you'd think moderate fog usage would fall under the weather resistant "umbrella" (pun indented). Shooting in moderately inclement weather was one of the main Pentax attractions for me (this is my first dslr...).

Anyone experience this? Should I be worried or just assume it's a quirk? If it's a weather sealing defect I'd feel sheepish if I ignored it and subsequently trashed the body during the next light rain shower (or let it happen and buy a K-1???).

Thanks!

Decent L-plate/bracket for K-70?

Dear all,

Just finally coughed up the $$$ for a decent tripod and I'd like to step up my connection game a little (I currently only have a little square arca swiss type QR plate that came with a camera strap).

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced L-plate that properly fits this model? Needs to allow opening the mic cover for a cable release, be arca swiss compatible, and have a cutout loop or something to which to attach a strap mount to the bottom right of the plate.

If these things don't exist together I may just go with a wider QR plate.

Thanks!

Silver finish durability?

Looks like an old thread, but for those considering the K-70, I've had my gray model about 6 months and the finish seems quite durable. I have to say though that I regret not going with black. The gray is kind of a dark, warm gray that just looks kind of weird. Doesn't really "go" with anything in a normal photography kit, which is mostly black. A neutral black or silver would play better with black. Also it doesn't have that cool speckled texture that seems to be a classic slr trait.

Wow! Thanks all of you for the advice, lots of great information.

Canid:

From everything I've read I think it should be all the way closed, but I'm getting plenty of light through the viewfinder. To be honest I really don't understand how that aperture lever works on these tubes (they're not completely "dumb", but maybe I am!). I've read conflicting explanations, maybe the lever actually keeps it OPEN if the f/ can't be dialed in on-lens? That used 40mm limited I bought turns out to have an egg-shaped aperture  so I'll probably try to find a decent deal on an old 50mm with an aperture ring in the near term, and use the limited for street shooting.

BTW great spider pics!
