I'm not particularly interested in "half frame" format either, but it would have to be a significant step up from 110 format cameras like the Kodak Instamatic 40 camera I used prior to getting my first SLR in 1975. Anyway if I want to shoot film again I still have 3 35mm film cameras available to use.

While I don't have any experience with KEH, they have been in business for a number of years & have a good reputation. I would also suggest that you also check out Used Camera Pro (Roberts Camera, located in Indianapolis, IN) I've bought both new & used equipment from them without any issues or concerns since the mid 1970s. They also do a good job of rating used equipment & include a 6 month warranty on used equipment.

@ reh321
Apparently your more of a fan of film photography than I am. Other than the rather considerable tactile pleasure of using my FM & FE2 again, I see little advantage of going back to shooting film again. I think the last time I regularly used film was probably around 2010. About 90% of my film photography was with slide film which probably contributes to this...

While I do hope that Ricoh/Pentax is successful with the film camera project, and that the "half-frame" camera eventually leads to a full frame modern SLR, I'm not likely to buy any new film cameras. Especially since I still have my near mint condition Nikon FM & FE2 film cameras as well as my mother's Minolta HI-Matic.

For years I had both a K-5 and the original K-3. I barely noticed the size difference, or the weight difference for that matter. Compared to the K-3 III the differences are noticeable though. If I were going to upgrade my K-5 to a K-5 II I'd go for the K-5 IIs version.

Curiously the linked article mentions the Pentax KF, K-70 and the K1-II, but not the K3-III when listing the "best" DSLRs !

Compared to my Pentax DFA 50mm Macro, the spring loaded tab on your Laowa lens looks at least 1/16 inch wider. I don't see any other difference. Looking at my KP it doesn't look like this would make any difference though.

It's even worse to return home from a distant location & find the film never attached correctly to the film advance spool leaving you with a wasted role of film and no pictures. This happened to me once when visiting Washington D.C. back in the 1980s.

Is this issue with the flex cable of the tilt screen known to be a problem throughout the production run of the KP ? My KP was purchased in December of 2018. I would hope that at some point Ricoh would have become aware of this issue.

The KP was rather too much when introduced, I bought mine at a "Black Friday" sale price of $699, mainly because I wanted a camera with pixel shift and was tired of waiting for the K-3 III. I ended up liking it more than I thought I would, even added a battery grip when they went on sale a year or 2 later. I also have a K-5 and now a K-3 III as well as a silver KP. If something happened to my KP I would definitely want to replace it, although I wouldn't say it is my favorite of the 3 cameras, I like and use all 3. ---------- Post added 12-31-2023 at 02:57 PM ----------
Additionally, the large grip which is designed to be used with the optional battery grip, when used with the battery grip makes the KP a much better handling camera than most other Pentax cameras, such as the K-3, with grips attached are.

I would probably pick the FA 31 Ltd. I already have the DA 15, 21, 35 & 70 Limiteds.

The Nikon FM cameras were & are great cameras. I started out with a Nikkormat FT2, than a Nikkormat EL. The original FM was the 1st Nikon camera that I wanted to keep long term, although I later added an FE2. I still have both and never really wanted to upgrade further during the film era. The main reason I went with Nikon was because they had PC lens ( and the Architectural school at the University I went to had lens that they would loan out to architecture & planning students). Otherwise I probably would have gone with Pentax.

Both are very good cameras. I have both the KP and the K3-III, and use both regularly as well as a K-5. All 3 are cameras I enjoy using and have every intention on keeping long term. Although very different, both have excellent ergonomics and produce satisfying images. Aside from the superbe build quality and ergonomics of the K-3 III, I think that it has better white balance than the KP and somewhat better image quality. I think they would complement each other nicely and would recommend keeping a KP as a backup to the K-3 III.

The "Flagship" level Pentax cameras like the K-7, K-5 & K-3 models, and also the KP, used a different mechanism to control the aperture, so they are not prone to aperture block failure.

Not counting a Kodak Instamatic 126 & a Kodak Pocket Instamatic 40, my first serious camera was a Nikkormat FT3. That was followed by a Nikkormat EL, than a Nikon FM, & later with an FE2. I still have the FM & the FE2, these 2 were easily my favorite film cameras. Didn't go digital until around 2002 with Olympus Stylist cameras, than a Pentax *ist DS in 2006.

Nikon FM & FE film cameras used similar CR batteries & screw-in holders.

I've had good results with a Vivitar labeled one (VIV-PEB-109 7.4V 1600mAh 11.8Wh) which I purchased 3 or 4 years ago thru Amazon. So far its been comparable to the Pentax one. No idea who actually made them for Vivitar, but if they are still available I would recommend them.

I noticed early on with my KP that if it was set on "Vibrant" and to a lesser extant "Bright" custom image settings, that the colors were exaggerated or even garish especially in the "Vibrant" custom image setting. I find that I get the best results using the "Natural" setting. On my other Pentax cameras (*istDS, K-5 & K-3) the "Bright" custom image setting has generally been fine. Try the "Natural" setting & see if that gives better more natural results.

Since desk space is a problem for you, I would suggest finding an adjustable laptop stand that has built-in powered USB ports. I use one which has 5 USB ports as well as a cooling fan. My external hard drives & card reader are attached to it.

Its curious how some people, including those that take care of their gear, seem to be plagued with problems. Unfortunately it seems to happen with most brands. Since buying my 1st Pentax camera, an ist DS which I still have around 2005, I've had a K-10, K-7, K-5, K-3, KP and now a K-3 III all without any problems. The only issue I've had is with my DA* 16-50mm which had the SDM failure issue several years ago. I have had an Olympus C50, and a cheap Canon Powershot fail.

Perhaps that may be true in Europe, but in the U.S. at least, I think the reason for most camera stores not carrying Pentax products is because of the lack of regional sales representatives and the support they would provide. That was my local camera store's reason for not carrying Pentax in stock (though they will special order).

Ok, but how is this much or really any different from Nikon & Canon users who do not want to go mirrorless ? When Nikon & Canon eventually stop producing and selling new DSLRs, and providing support services for them the viability of continuing to use DSLRs from Nikon & Canon will also be in question.

If your ok with manual lens, than look at Kiron Pentax K mount or PKA lens. They made both 24mm & 28mm f2.0 lens. They are well made & reasonably small. I have the Nikon AIS F mount version of the 24mm one and was quite pleased with it. They were made in the late 1970s & early 1980s, and were also sold under the Vivatar Series 1 label. Pentaxforums has a review of the 28mm - Kiron MC 28mm F2 Lens Reviews - Miscellaneous Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database |

I'm surprised that no one has suggested the ist* Ds & Ds2 6 meg. cameras. They are the smallest cameras that Pentax has made and unlike the K100D series & the K200D don't have penta mirror viewfinders. I still have my original Pentax camera which is an ist* Ds, aside from the single control dial, I consider it to be one of the most orgonic Pentax has made. I'm not aware of them having had any solenoid problems.
