Production of black Pentax K-3 Mark III stopped???!!!

And yet Ricoh have stated that “The camera business remained strong and sales increased,” in the last financial report. I wonder how they managed that with selling DSLRs? Could it be that some of us haven’t a clue about Ricoh/Pentax’s actual business beyond sheer conjecture?

I should put these threads on the Ignore list as a matter of policy, they create little heat and no light whatever. :(

I would reset the camera first, then immediately do a firmware upgrade. Remember to have full batteries for the upgrade. There were several useful functions added after the 1.5x series. Then you can continue with the various modifications such as user modes and folder names, etc. It will soon be *your* camera. You made a good choice in acquiring a K-1. - Jack

Seems unlikely. The KF just came out and significant changes to the KF body to include any kind of upgrade to take it past where the K3 II/KP were at would take the cost up into the 1100 or 1200 range.

I think the point of the KF was to (a) let Pentax buyers know that aperture block issues were a thing of the past and (b) keep the body price as low as possible. All of that has little to do with why Pentax is (or isn't) still making K-3 III cameras and what their plans are for their SLR line up.

My guess would have been that they would release a K-1 III before anything to the K-3 III, but who knows?

The one thing I am certain of is that they aren't planning to cease SLR production.

Edit: The K-3 III is a sunk cost. Assuming they can make money selling them at 1700 USD (the current price on Amazon), I see no reason why they would discontinue it unless they have something to supersede it.

Well said! There's so much more to this camera than any review has ever even mentioned; it's obvious they never even got to know the camera and its features properly. That means no-one has properly reviewed this camera. Of the ones I've seen, including DPReview, they've all in fact been initial impressions videos/articles, despite the title of "review." I've even seen one or two long-term reviews where they are just using the camera as they would their old K-3... old habits, I guess (but if that's how they enjoy using it, that's fine!). So, again, not a proper review. It is a way different animal than the K-3 I or II.

IMO what makes this camera so great is actually hard to put into words, and is very subjective. But it's more than the sum of its parts and it's just a joy to use. Way more fun factor than I get with mirrorless. I am in no way a mirrorless hater. I have them and use them and enjoy them, I just have way more fun with my K-3iii.

Side note: it helps that Pentax has some really badass lenses if you don't mind screwdriver noises. The DA Limited lineup is just amazing on the K-3iii. Feels like a million bucks and the photos look like it, too.

I would not be happy with a used Medium Format camera because
1. I have no way to scan medium format film.
2. The stores I purchase film from primarily sell 35mm film.
3. I have no medium format gear; I would have to start ‘from scratch’; in contrast, I have lots of 35mm gear.
4. I don’t know how long it would last; an advantage of Pentax making new cameras is it would arrive under warranty and be made of new - easily available - parts.

I think it should be around the price of a compact digital camera. Not so cheap that it sacrifices quality, but still a reasonable add on camera for any photographer.

I own an *ist D (got it 14 yrs ago) and a DS. The only batteries that work consistently in those cameras are Eneloop rechargeables or equivalent. Haven't tried CR-V3s but regular alkaline AA's are a no-go. They are great little old cameras - good luck.

This! And, perhaps more then a "bit" of underexposure.

Also as Bruce Clark noted - to get good sunset (and sunrise) photos, you generally need to underexpose by a stop or two (or even three).

As mentioned it is helpful to post samples and camera settings used

Also sunsets are difficult for cameras to meter properly

Best to use manual exposure and observe results on the screen. Correct exposure can be 2-3 stops below meter indication

Bracketing is also an option in camera or in post processing

Pentax K5?

Enjoy :)
Despite having a K-3iii in the bag for when I'm out "birding" etc., it's the K-5 that comes out in the garden or down to the beach for when I want the reassurance of a more robust body ;)
The results rarely disappoint ... and if they do, it's probably my fault anyway!

I don’t want to single you out in any way but this is one more example of statements that proceed on the assumption that Ricoh is just stupid. This is a business, it is done to make money (among other things if we as consumers are lucky), and it requires people running that business to do their homework. Bad business decisions are being made, there is an empirical basis for that observation – but perhaps less often than people seem to think. And for the second part of the assumption – we know better – there is simply no basis at all.

Too many people are jumping to conclusions without seeing the actual product.

Is is too much to ask that people wait a few months, then base opinions on people’s experience with the actual product? That doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll need to purchase it yourself - I’m sure enough will purchase it and then post photos.

I'm not the target market for this camera, either, but I wish them success. Haven't shot film in several years and have no itch to do so again, but if I did, I have several working film cameras on hand. Full frame 35mm.

I have had no problems with my late production K5 and possibly AF issues were fixed with updates? Not sure but again we don't know how many units have no problem and how many do. Anecdotal evidence without research is not conclusive.

The KP looks small as hell and featurepacked, finally time to upgrade from my K-01?

I've had two silver KP bodies for quite some years now, bought new when lower prices came. I use them both and love them much. Just beware of the problem with too much use of the pull-out rear screen, as due to a design fault the cable flexing often will develop cracks in the cable and the screen will then become dysfunctional. Fortunately, I don't use the pull-out screen often enough to incur this issue, at least not so far. If pulling it out is a necessity, at least do so slowly and carefully!

If there is a KP-II, I would hope this design flaw will be corrected! Ricoh/Pentax really should give a special low price break to customers for repairs when this problem come up.

Pentax KF, colossal failure, or viable upgrade?

I think the KF price has gone down since launch and now is basically what the K-70 was.

The KF is neither a failure nor an "upgrade", it's Pentax finding a way to continue offering the best entry level DSLR on the market. IMHO.

So the answer is "none of the above". It's just a great, affordable enthusiast camera.

Thanks for posting this. It's a positive message and outlook :)

Whilst we, as customers, might want faster and more prolific development and release of products, it seems Ricoh Imaging's cautious approach is vindicated (for the time being, at least). If that's what it takes for Pentax to survive in the current market - and for Ricoh to remain committed to the brand - then so be it. I'd rather see a gradual drip feed of products over the next decade than a boom-and-bust scenario...

CIPA numbers for 2023.

The issue is simply that capabilities are improving in ways which don't really matter to consumers. Faster frame rate, even better video, and higher megapixels seem to be what camera brands deliver these days. On the other hand, things like better dynamic range and better high iso performance have been relatively stagnant over the last several years (they may even have gotten worse with the A9 III).

I suppose it is going to be more like the film era when 5 to 6 million cameras were sold each year. You didn't need to buy a new camera each year because they just didn't change that much from year to year.

CIPA numbers for 2023.

Interesting numbers are in detailed reports. It seems that, despite all MILC offensive DSLR are still ~20% of all ILC cameras produced. Also for units shipped it looks interesting. Seems that all Asian markets, including Japan, are dead for DSLR. On the other hand in USA and EU 30% or all cameras shipped are DSLR (for Japan it is 7%, for China 9%). So no wonder all big ones are opting out from DSLR production.

Now, for Pentax getting 7% of camera marketshare in China or in general around Asia would be great deal, at this market level I think only OVF/DSLR aficionados are buying DSLRs so there is a chance lots of them will get Pentax as their next camera. And if they can keep even half, or 1/4th or current DSLR market in USA and EU it should be enough for them to stay profitable.

It looks bleak for Nikon, Canon and Sony camera divisions, but I think it is quite opposite for Ricoh/Pentax.

That's one of my favorite lenses. I had the 40mm XS and loved it. I felt it paired perfectly with my K-5. You know how some lens + camera combinations just seem like a match made in heaven? That was the 40mm XS and my K-5. Later I picked up the SMC 40mm LTD because I wanted a hood and to complete my SMC Limited collection, which I haven't used on my K-5 yet. Both are great but I prefer the Limited for the build quality and quick-shift focus capability, and of course the hood (thought I didn't often feel I needed one with the XS). IQ they seem identical to me.

If I had to choose one prime, though, it would be the 35mm macro. While the 40mm is my favorite to use, the 35mm is more versatile (macro) and sharper too. It's a great "walkabout" lens, better than the 40 except for size.
