Night PENTAX Astrophotography

You may have heard of “600 rule” in astrophotography. It, although kind of too optimistic, is useful to determine the maximal safe length of exposure you can keep stars clear. 600 divided by the effective focal length is what you can keep star streaks unnoticeable. For a 300 mm lens, for example, to keep each exposure shorter than 2 seconds is recommended.
For darker objects, stacking and an equatorial mount are usually required. It’s also bothersome to stack a pile of short-exposed RAW files. To make things easier, an equatorial mount is almost mandatory, even though it is not only heavy but costly.

PENTAX comes to save you, dude.
PENTAX leverages it’s Shake Reduction (SR) System maximally. In addition to reducing moire and compiling 4 continuous photos by Pixelshift to enable super-resolution, it can also simulate an equatorial mount. Sure, it has exposure limitations compared to a real equatorial mount, but it truly enables PENTAX to top other competitors in terms of astrophotography.
In brief, the PENTAX astrotracer utilizes GPS and let the sensor move according to Earth rotation, making simulation of an equatorial mount possible.

Among high-end models of PENTAX, only K-1, K-1 ii, (FF) and K-3 ii (APS-C) are equipped with GPS. Other models should be paired with a small accessory called O-GPS1 mounted on the hot shoe. After turn on the GPS and astrotracer and calibrate, one can enjoy tracking stars. Don’t forget to press the green bottom to shift B mode to astrotracer mode.
The camera will limit the maximal length of exposure according to the focal length. For example, a camera without astrotracer mounted with a 300 mm lens can go without star streaks in 1-2 seconds, but PENTAX makes it possible to shoot for up to 50 seconds in a single shot. For wide angle lenses, the limitation is up to 5 minutes. Now you can happily live without an equatorial mount, LOL.
Have you ever shoot galaxies with an ultra-wide lens? XD

Sad to see such picture.
Revamp lens is welcome, considering the limited resources Ricoh have, but what I plan to see is those with super-fast PLM motors or at least. SDM or DC ones.

Hi Folks,
It is clearly a pity that the author of this review is a Pentax hater. In Mobile01, the reliability of a Pentax-related article would be better if written by another guy.

1) In this article, the author said, "Its magnification ratio is 0.18x, so the macro ability is alright"
==> Com'on, someone replied in the thread saying
Sigma 50mm f1.4 ART 0.18X
Nikon AFS 50mm f1.4 G 0.15X
Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM 0.11X
Sony FE 50mm F1.4 ZA 0.15X

2) The author said, "According to MTF, central sharpness in F1.4 is OK, and corner sharpness needs to be improved"
==> I think it was out of focus in the photo. And, I think the author is the only one who feels the sharpness is merely OK

3) The author said, "The combo of K-1 ii and DFA*50 weighs almost 2 kg. It's a huge burden. PENTAXIANS COULDN'T HELP BUT HOPELESSLY STICK TO IT. IT CAN'T BE HELPED."
==> Logic????? Just a Pentax hater.
==> Taiwanese lesson: 愛到卡慘死 literally means "Love and die tragically". It is usually used to describe a woman married to a jerk.

4) The author said, "Corner is not sharp until F4"
==> DFA* is sharper than its competitors actually. But the author just ignored the fact.

5) Poor LoCA
==> Well, maybe at this point he is not totally wrong. In different reviews, DFA* demonstrates more LoCA but less in other reviews. The author should have tried other lenses in the same position.

6) The author said, "I thought its flare and ghost would be scarce, but they are obvious."
==> I think in such harsh scene, other lenses would show more flare and ghost.

7) The author appraised its starburst, vignette, and lack of cat-eye effect.

8) The author in conclusion said, "K-1 ii is TOOOO SLOOOOOOOW. Shooting pace would be bothered and interrupted severely."
==> Hello? Are you reviewing the camera?

9) The author complained about the high price
==> It's not a third party lens OK?

So, I think his review is similar to that by DPreview, both written by Pentax -haters.

Panasonic G8 is re-named as G80/G85 in certain areas because G8 sounds similar to "dxck" in Mandarin Chinese and "pxssy" in Taiwanese......
PENTAX's production rate is LOW enough for them to rename it before selling the machines to Germany.

Nikon Z6/Z7

Wow. Z6/Z7 look much better than I expected!
The Z-mount seems quite promising. Huge mount enables super-fast lens such as f0.95 "Noct". Absence of focus-shift. Abundant AF points. Better continuous video AF. Better ergonomics than Sony. F-to-Z adaptor. The vast investment and 3 new lenses at first followed by several rumored Noct lenses at a higher releasing speed than Pentax.
DFA*50 is still not available in Taiwan. And where is DA*11-18 :(

Ricoh's are plain gray with a lens/body photo pasted on it, no matter what level of the product is.
Olympus's high-end products are in well-designed boxes.
I think the Olympus way is worth considering for Pentax star series. :p
