I don’t recall having that issue but now want to double check what mine does. maybe I changed the menu option previously when I first got the camera. Surprised that is not the default.

I use the 2018 version but rely on DXO, current version 4, to process the raw image and then use paintshop for specific tasks. Corel has their own raw processing program, Aftershot, but I was never happy with the results.

Not wanting to commit to subscrption pricing, I use DXO and PaintShop Pro, which are one time purchase options. Both offer tutorials on YouTube but nowhere near the number that are available for Adobe products.

My k-70 failed but I had it repaired under an extended warranty from Mastercard. So I love the camera but expect it may fail again. My k-50 has just started to act up on the first shot after any period of non-use so I am shopping for a used camera from which I can harvest an old white solenoid.

That looks like a good solution. Glad you took the time to share this.

A YouTube video was recently posted showing a solenoid pulled from an MZ-50 film camera and put into a K-30. Can anyone confirm whether that is an acceptable replacement part? I have been thinking of buying a spare camera as a donor, expecting my K-50 or K-70 to fail in the future. I already have a Mz-50 that came with a used lens I wanted but don't know if that solenoid is the same.

Thanks for your hard work on this. Good note re the autofocus switch. Precision repaired my K-70 recently and I had to return it to have that issue corrected.

My 2 year old 50-135 is dead. Knowing the SDM reputation is sketchy I bought an extended warranty. Usually a waste of money but maybe not this time. the warranty company said they couldn’t fix it (naturally) so they claimed they would send to manufacturer. Now, 3 weeks later the warranty company reports they will refund my purchase instead. Love the lens but wondering since I’m getting a do-over I should seek something else.

Beautiful locations. Although blurry water is all the rage currently I prefer the last photo with faster shutter.

I am rapidly losing faith in Pentax. 2 months ago I had to have the aperture assembly replaced on k-70 (ruined my photo opportunities while on vacation), and today my 50-135 f/2.8 stopped focusing. I purchased the lens new in 2017 hoping they actually did resolve the sdm problem, but as of today, on first push of focus button it makes a slight tick as if trying to focus but then it just sits there doing nothing. Good thing I bought the extended warranty on this. I don't normally buy warranties, but I knew this lens has a sketchy history.

Correct. When i first found images severely underexposed, live view was still giving better exposure. Subsequent tests a week later were dark in both modes but the metering function appeared ok: Manually setting aperture ring on vintage lenses to the setting that the camera calculated resulted in correctly exposed images.

Precision Camera just replaced the “aperture control assy” and “resistor chip” on my k-70.
The nearly black images in all auto modes are gone. Exposures are now correct and the repair was performed astoundingly quickly.

Since returning from vacation I was able to test my k-70 with multiple lenses. All lenses produce dark images in all the auto modes. Manually setting aperture ring on vintage lenses to the metered readings produced ok images every time.
Not sure why I was initially getting better results with live mode- but that has now failed as well and dark images result from both modes.
I am sending the camera for repair under mastercard extended warranty and will post an update once it comes back. In future will travel with an old manual lens so i can take at least a few vacation photos if/when it fails again.

I keep the lens and mount very clean but went over them just in case. Exposure comp has been at 0. Multi segment metering, In AV at f/22, ISO 100 in optical view mode it calculated a 4 sec exposure (I am currently in a very dim room). The image is slightly dim. When I turn on live view mode at same settings, it sets the shutter at 30" and the histogram jumps to the right - actually a bit blown out.
Opening the aperture causes speed to plummet in AV mode and image at f/11 is very underexposed in optical mode. (1" exposure in OVM vs. 20"+ in LVM) will try diff lenses when i can.

Shooting a K-70 for over a year. No exposure problems. Today began getting nearly black images in all modes: AV, TAV, M, Auto. My 1st thought was aperture block failure but after some testing found live view appears to expose correctly. Optical view is around 5 stops under exposed. pop up flash shots are equally under exposed in both modes. I have only 1 lens with me currently (Sigma 17-50 2.8) so I have not tried an older manual lens yet, but I doubt it's lens related.

Amazingly quick service. The sd card on my K-70 was not locking in place. Precision Camera serviced it and shipped it out to me the very day they received it.

I agree a bridge camera such as a nikon coolpix or Panasonic lumix would be a logical step up from an iphone.
