Of course I have good reason to be excited! So much so that I'm just tapping my feet waiting for it to arrive at my place!
The K-30 was great for what it is, and my K-3 was greater, the K-3 III will be even greater than that.

JordonDucks CroPPY video about Pentax video.

Hey all! Turns out I still have an account here!

I had a 'Hollywood' 28mm F2.0 that I was really excited to use as a standard lens. However, even when the aperture ring was enabled in the menu, that only allowed it to stop down when shooting stills. In video mode it was always stuck wide open no matter what the aperture ring was set to. Same with my old K-Mount 50mm. Screw mount would have worked, however I did not have access to any of those lenses.

The K-01 and many Pentax cameras disable the mechanical SR when shooting video and use a terrible digital SR that leads to the artifacts seen. It looks like the K3 Mark III will use the mechanical SR, so I'm curious how it will perform.

For anyone saying we're just ganging up on Pentax, we asked people on Twitter and YouTube which camera they would want to see me challenged to shoot video with. "A Pentax Camera" was the most popular response, with the K-01 being the most requested single model. I do as the people ask.

The K-01 took some beautiful thumbnail photos, but the video quality and especially shooting experience is terrible. I did my best to represent that.

I don't think fair is part of the game when one is trying to bring their hidden agenda out from under the rock they have been using for cover.
Pentax has generally not released new camera bodies until they have more than a small incremental improvement to replace the present body with, unlike Canon or Sony who will take the same old feculence, change the buttons around a bit, and call it a new camera model.

You gotta be stupid if you fall for this. Just the fact that they wanna make the deal outside Ebay and look at the link/web address and you know this is the cheapest trick.

I would say that is a fraudulent listing. Listing indicates to make an offer at another website address (spoofing eBay) and they will close the listing. I expect your money will disappear and no lens will appear. Transaction will be outside of eBay so no money back from them. Seller is in Germany with lens supposedly in California. Hang onto your money for a K-3 III from a reputable seller.

The release has to be right around the corner if they're releasing all these videos showing exactly what the camera is like and how the functions work. I know the HD FA Limiteds have a release of April 30th. I'm hoping the K-3 III is before that, but even if it's not, hopefully Pre-Orders will be open VERY soon. It really seems that PENTAX has pulled up their boot straps and went all in to dispel any doubts that they can go toe to toe across photography genres. The one thing they didn't have was a fast action model. Now they do. Agrh! Just take my money already PENTAX!

That seems about right, $700-$900. Pentax has a lot of non-premium lenses (not star or limited). If they just went premium, they'll have to upgrade a lot of lenses.

CEO of Ricoh (the mother ship) talks about the future of PENTAX and GR

There was an investor meeting of Ricoh Co. Ltd. (the mother ship, not the company that makes your camera, that's Ricoh Imaging Co. Ltd.) on Mar 3 2021. Ricoh as a group is a big business, consumer camera is just a tiny part of that. In the previous meeting (Nov 2020) Ricoh laid out a plan to become "digital service" company targeting other businesses, they continued the theme this time, but president/CEO Yamashita also talked a bit about the future of Pentax and GR.

To summarize: He expressed his (or Ricoh's) willingness to make PENTAX and GR continue for future as a valuable business. He said that they "will start searching for a way" to do it, that in doing so they hope they can work with outside partner(s). Later, when asked about accepting outside investment VS selling camera business, he said that they're willing to work with partners if necessary and are willing to invest, OTOH they won't be able to "fulfill responsibilities" (to make the brands continue) if they just sell the brands and therefore they need to think long and hard.

He chose words to convey his sense that it's their job to make sure that the heritage goes on, mentioning enthusiastic fans as the reason why he feels that way. OTOH, he signaled that the way Ricoh Imaging operates under Ricoh as of now cannot continue forever though he didn't make any definitive statements and certainly he didn't give any time scale.

You can stop right here unless you're really interested.

Below are English and Japanese version of the presentation. Relevant part is on page 9, but the sentence about SV (Smart Vision) doesn't make sense because the Japanese sentence wasn't great to start with. What does "integrate cameras (PENTAX and GR) into Ricoh Imaging" mean when Ricoh owns these brands anyway?

https://jp.ricoh.com/-/Media/Ricoh/Sites/jp_ricoh/IR/events/2020/pdf/r02_keiei.pdf (Japanese)

Redacted transcript (which seems to be only available in Japanese) is better.

(on page 10)
Written at the bottom is about SV business. As for consumer cameras like PENTAX and GR, we'll start searching for a way to make them continue as a valuable business for future by integrating (business?) functions into Ricoh Imaging. We hope to be able to proceed with a help from outside parties. OTOH, 360 degrees camera and its optical technologies are essential for a digital service company, so we'll keep pushing that.

After the talk there was a Q&A, which was also published by Ricoh but it's a bit sanitized (Japanese, https://jp.ricoh.com/-/Media/Ricoh/Sites/jp_ricoh/IR/events/2020/pdf/presentation_qa_2020.pdf). You should read Impress Cloud Watch's report instead (again in Japanese):

President Yamashita said: "Camera business was competing by volume, making and selling large numbers. However, while taking care of GR and Pentax, I myself felt/appreciated that customers using our products are people who love the brand, or enthusiasts I might say, we don't sell our models in large numbers but we have fans. Because of this, we're thinking about how to make (the brands) continue for the future. If others share the same vision (of making these brands continue for the future) we're willing to work with them if necessary, and we are willing to invest if necessary. OTOH, if we just sell it, we cannot make sure that our responsibility (to continue the brand) will be fulfilled. We have to think long and hard.

Let's see how it goes.

The most viable way forward is for Pentax to be the only -- or at least the best -- manufacturer still making DSLR cameras with optical viewfinders. It will only ever be a boutique product for a niche market, and it might not be possible without attracting outside investment, but in the current ecosystem what other option is there? The only real question is whether the Pentax name holds enough cachet for it to become the optical viewfinder equivalent of the Leica rangefinder. As far as I'm concerned, it does.

I was about to post this. Thanks! There's subtitles but only in Japanese. :D

A few things I just spotted:

1. At 2:38 it shows the significant improvements in the viewfinder display. There's a lot more information available at the bottom of the viewfinder.
2. At 3:52 it shows the complexity of the new pentaprism system. I hadn't noticed how complicated it was to add all the information displays etc.
3. At 6:28 it shows a top view of a camera. I think this is the K1 not the K3iii. The K3iii is shown at 6:42. I think he was introducing the function dial.

4. At 6:49 I notice that there's an indication marked "AF Hold" (sorry I can't type katakana on this keyboard). Presumably this lights when you get AF lock and hold the shutter release half way?
5. At 8:30 it shows that there's five user modes. This is great, because I would really like to have more than the three on the K3.
6. At 12:04 he shows the AF pattern (and there's mention of f2.8 and -4EV limits).
7. At 14:23 he shows the weather sealing.
8. At 15:18 he shows the image sensor which has 25.73 million (2573*10,000) pixels.
9. At 17:05 he talks about a new sharpness setting called "Fine Sharpness II" in relation to "Fine Sharpness" and "Extra Sharpness". (I'm translating the katakana)

PS The Japanese have this curious anomaly in counting where after 1,000 they count in multiples of 10,000 and multiples of 100,000,000 (ie 10,000 * 10,000). So that's why the pixels in the sensor are counted in multiples of 10,000. I believe that this goes back to old counting systems in China which are no longer used. The Japanese also retained counters which are no longer used in Chinese eg. counters for people, small animals, large animals, rice etc etc. So counting things in Japanese can be extraordinarily complicated.

They've just posted it here:

You Tube

Update: I don't have time to write anything detailed now, but here are things you might want to know.

11:46 AF points coverage.

12:11 OVF Face, Eye and Bird detection is coming!
Combination of the new 307 thousand dots RGVIr metering sensor data and PRIME V means that they can detect motion, color distribution and shape, and they use this for image recognition. Mr. Wakashiro specifically said "things like face, eye and bird".
New algorithm for prediction of moving object position means better tracking even if the velocity toward the camera changes irregularly.

16:00 High ISO, better color rendition than K-1 II!
Examples shown are at ISO 102400 and 204800 and it's not like you want to use that kind of ISO, but anyway, K-3 III is clearly better as far as color is concerned.

That's not an investment, that's a sunken cost. It's still a valid concern, though. We all have a lot of money in this system.

And yes, microchip shortages have shuttered major auto manufacturing plants. Like profitable lines such as F-150 trucks.

I'm sticking with the crop sensors, but the bulk of my work is either macro or telephoto.
There are a few of us in the region, but we haven't attempted a big meet-up or anything.
