Updating this thread. The K1 can be used for live streaming. There is a YouTube video ( You Tube |

) that shows you how to set it up and remove all the display info using the camera video mode, a power adapter, and a streaming card.

So 6 years after this post, I turn on my K-1 and my saved settings for shooting art are all gone. Panic. I don't even know where or if I ever wrote them down. Then I remembered this thread. And Boom! Thanks again for saving me from having to recreate those settings for artwork.!

During the processing of an image using Pixel Shift on my K-1, the screen used to show the image in 4 quadrants as it was processing. It doesn't show the four-quadrant with an image anymore. I have checked my settings to make sure Pixel Shift is on. Is this just a new software update that removed that 4 quadrant feature of Pixel Shift processing or do I have something turned off that should be on.
How can I confirm that my image is Pixel Shift after taken?
Thanks for the help.

Oh. Okay. I was referring to no overlays and using it for webcam capture and live streaming.

Still shooting images of artwork in 2020 with the K-1 + 50mm lens set up. Up to about 2000 works now. It's never let me down.

I was able to remove all the overlays and produce a clean HDMI from my K-1. Can't speak to the frame-rate question or the resolution yet. Still working on that.

I want to add this note to this thread so that everyone knows the Pentax K-1 will output clean HDMI. You have to turn off AF, Grid, etc. through the menu systems, but it will work. I can't yet tell you what the output will be (my guess is 720p at 30f).

I wanted to provide an update on using the K1 and the Pentax SMC Pentax-D FA Macro 50mm f2.8 lens. I've now show several hundred works of art (with several hundred more in the collection to go), and I can say hands down this is the best equipment for the money you can buy for this type of photography. With PixelShift, the images of art details are amazingly sharp (even 15 ft away) with no discernable distortion. Yes, scanning the image gives a higher resolution, but it isn't affordable for most artists. This is hands down the equipment you want to buy for shooting art.

Good point on the 645Z IR. I should have qualified my statement as a better camera for professional artists that won't break the bank.

I thought I might follow up on my original post and share some feedback on my experience. I went with the following equipment:
- Pentax K-1
- Pentax DFA 50mm F2.8 Macro
- Manfroto 055 Tripod with Junior 410 Gearhead
- Sekoni Flashmate L-308S-U
- X-rite color checker passport
- B+W circular polarizer filter (F-Pro)
- Vello Shutterboss II remote
- Large Fiskars cutting matte
- 4x Aperture Araman HR672S LEDs (and cheap stands that came with them)
- Polarizing film taped to the LEDs
- Lightroom and Photoshop
With this setup, I'm able to get very, very good images of artwork. Of course, I'm shooting in my office with blacked out windows so I can completely control the light sources. Using the color checker passport, I've set up a profile for my LED lights and now with one click in Lightroom I have perfect color. I use the light meter to adjust the LEDs so that the light is mostly even across the work. For the smaller drawings, I use my Manfroto tripod with an extendable arm to shoot images on the ground. For larger works, I set the painting on the desk and shoot them regularly. The polarized film on the LEDs plus the circular polarizing filter on the lens allows me to cut out virtually all glare. Plus, I can shoot works behind glass and plexiglass without worrying about a light reflection from the LEDs.
The Pentax K-1 Pixelshift mode is amazing. With the Vello remote shutter release plus shooting with the mirror up, I have no vibrations. The DFA 50mm F2.8 macro gives superb clarity along with the Pixelshift. To get images this good I would need a much more expensive camera, a scanback or use a large table scanner. I also can't say enough good things about the wonky, flexible tilt monitor on the back of the K-1. It's made it easy to see what's going on with the images in LiveView, especially when I need to make on the fly adjustments to the exposer.
I've uploaded some images, though they don't really show the quality after the forum reduces the file size.
I don't think Pentax could have made a better camera for copying artwork than the K-1.

I'm shooting art copy stills in a controlled lighting environment using Pixel Shift on my K-1. I'm shooting in DNG with no Motion Correction (not needed).
I've read where Lightroom can't process Pixel Shift files well and to use the DCU5 software that came with the K-1 or another converter like Adobe Camera Raw or RawTherapee.
Well, I've exported a test DNG Pixel Shifted image using ETTR to a 16-bit TIFF from Lightroom and DCU5 to compare the difference. I could not discern any real difference in pixels the two processed images even at 400% magnification. Can anyone else confirm this, specifically that Lightroom is processing Pixel Shifted images as well as DCU5?

I tried the Air Force Lens resolution testing as described above. Honestly could not tell any difference for sharpness at f5.6-f/11. Not sure why. Maybe because I was only 50in from the chart (which was 3"x3") and dead center. Will run it again another time and see if I get different results.

This discussion has been extremely helpful. Whatever shortcomings Pentax has, they are more than made up for by the experience and knowledge of its users as displayed by everyone's thoughtful responses.

I'm photographing artwork with my K-1 and a Pentax D FA 50mm f2.8 macro. I am wondering what is the sharpest aperture for this lens? My test images (on a tripod, mirror up, tethered, pixelshift) are showing f/5.6. When I mentioned this to another (non-Pentax) photographer, he said that was probably not the sharpest aperture for that lens. Does anyone have experience with the D FA 50mm? What did you find. I'm shooting artwork, so I don't care about depth of field, just sharpness.

What about Noise Reduction? I turned it off but would that also impact sharpness?

Thanks for all the suggestions. Very helpful. I've read about the MTF mode and am not sure that it works well enough in for this situation.

I've just started using my new/used K-1 for shooting artwork. There are A LOT of settings on the K-1 that may/may not impact the sharpness of the captured image. I would like to get some feedback on what K-1 settings (excluding factors like lighting, ISO, tripod, lens type, aperture, tethered/remote) will give me the sharpest images for reproduction. Here are my thoughts:
1. Pixel Shift Resolution: ON. Motion correction: OFF.
2. AA Filter Simulator: OFF
3. LIVE VIEW: ON. Zoom 16x: Manual focus.
4. RAW: DNG
5. Live View: Electronic Shutter: ON
6. Self Timer: 2sec
7. Crop: Full Frame
8. Mirror Up: On
I don't know anything about Lens Correction or Noise Reduction settings if those would impact image sharpness. Is there something I missed? Or need to change?

bobbotron, I looked at the 100mm macro. How do you handle the distance required from the camera to the larger works or even the medium 4'x3' works? It would seem to me to be unworkable unless you have a very large indoor setting. Your thoughts? ---------- Post added 02-21-17 at 11:51 AM ----------
My math isn't that good. How much distance would you need for a 77mm and a 100mm?
