Interesting. In August 2018 I sent mine to the same place for the same repair, and the camera, which had light use actually since the repair, has failed, 15 months or so after the repair.

I need to let you all know that while my K-S2 had the aperture block repair in August of 2018, it has now failed again. The repair lasted about 15 months.
I think it's time to get a new camera, and I am going to research if any of the new models have the same parts that led to this problem.
Looks like it's a bigger issue than just the parts swap.

Thanks for the input. I am wanting to upgrade partly because my KS2 is showing some age--it's had hard use and there is grit in places now that I can't easily clean. I had the dreaded black frame problem and had that repaired. So I just don't want to have a camera that will fail on me when I"m away on one of my 6-week summer safaris abroad. Also I do enjoy getting new gear from time to time, and I think getting the KS2 the year it came out means I've not exactly been impatient to upgrade. Overall, I think the KP is going to be my choice. I hear the K70 has the same part that fails in the black frame problem, so i don't want to go there! The KP also has a kind of throw-back vibe about it that I like.
Thanks for the informed and helpful input!

My KS2 has been a faithful soldier but I'm hankering for an upgrade. I am stuck on the KP vs. K70. What would be the reason for choosing one over the other? I like the look of the KP, but I don't know if the features and functions of one are more impressive than the other. Would love to hear experiences and opinions based on use.

I am really glad I sent mine off for repair. It is solid now and my enjoyment of using the K-S2, which to my mind is one of the best "total package" cameras I've ever owned, has returned. I can't put it down.

I take students every summer for 6 weeks, 3 weeks of intensive historical geography and then 3 weeks excavating on an archaeological site. With all the dust of the latter, especially, the weather sealing of the Pentax bodies has been a life-saver. The Middle East is certainly an acquired travel taste, not for everyone, that's for sure. But my experiences in Israel and Jordan, even during wartime a few years ago, has been rich.

I have kept up using my K-S2 with the repaired aperture control block, and it is holding up. The camera feels solid, like it always has, and I'm loving using it again. The K3 is back to being my back up body. Anyone else try the repair with PC35 Photolab?

A new model in the spirit of the K3 is confusing me. I have a K3 and K-S2, both of which work well. I have been eyeing the K1Mkii, but if Pentax hits me with a newly evolved K3 type camera, I will be in a pickle of indecision. In some ways, I'd love to have the K1Mkii as my main body and the KP as my "little brother" body, but that's two sets of glass. An evolved K3+KP could be a perfect combination for me.

I had almost tamped down my urge to get the K-1MkII but now the fire is burning again. My existing K3 and K-S2 are both great, so I can't say I "need" it... but the urge is there.

I'm pondering stepping up. I have the "old" K3 and a K-S2. Honestly, if you end up liking that fully articulated screen on the K-S2 as I do, it's hard to imagine being happy about giving that up. So if my K-S2 bites the dust, I guess for me it would have to be the K70. On the other hand, if the K-S2 stays in the game, I might step up from the K3.
Still, I find the K-S2 to be the most overall effective and usable designs of any camera I've ever owned, and I started with the K20D and upgraded regularly. The K-S2 is a definite "sweet spot" for me.

So I've had a few days to test my K-S2 after getting it back from PC35 PhotoLab where I'd sent it to have my Aperture Control Block problem fixed. I sent the camera off on July 23, and received it back August 6. I consider that prompt service especially given they test the camera a few days after the repair.
I have shot about 250 pictures since receiving the camera, using 4 or 5 different lenses, and have not had one single dark frame. The camera feels like its "old self," the camera I have loved enthusiastically since I got it in 2015. It has gotten a lot of rough handling, exposure to water, dust, soft drink spills, high desert heat, just to name a few, and has performed well. The Aperture problem really upset me because I don't want to replace this camera yet, it's just too good of a fit for my lifestyle.
Anyhow, for now, with several days of testing, I can say for the moment the problem seems fixed and I am a happy camper.

So today my K-S2 is scheduled to arrive back from PC35 PhotoLab after having received their repair for the aperture block problem. I will report back on the results. I was quite happy with how they answered my inquiries and they have processed my camera promptly, in line with the time frame they give on their website. I will put the camera through its paces and come back here with an update!

My K-S2 developed this problem rather suddenly, despite my regularly using it with no problems ever since they came out. But it shows all the symptoms of the dreaded aperture control block failure. I've sent it to the gentleman in California for The Fix. Will report the outcome here.
