If you are using only Windows Paintshop pro is actually still a good alternative and priced very competatively so why not download a trial so you can see for yourself? As I wrote earlier, I use it and like it, but for the workflow dealing with lots (1500 after a weekend of dog sports) of raw images it's a little slow. I do some detail editing in it though and since I have the ultimate edition I have access to lots of nice filters, using X4 now. As I am mostly on Linux my "main tools" are Gimp and Aftershot Pro, both of them can be used on Windows, Linux, MacOS.

Since there was so many things in the photo that was reflected in the water I wanted to use that to be able to focus on what I thought was "important" in the image, the person, and use all other stuff to emphasize. Since the image was large from the beginning I did a pretty heave crop. I opened the image in Aftershot Pro (like it since I run it on Linux), cropped it. Created a layer for the upper right part which I thought was a bit dark, added 30 exposure to it. Did an auto-level and +20 vibrance on the whole image.. Exported with a 200 sharpen option. Opened it in Gimp, did some extra sharpening using extract/merge grain. Scaled it since I don't have that much space to spare. I like that the original image was nicely framed which meant I could reframe it using the reflections but it still show all surroundings, you just have to look for it, which I think is a nice braintease.

When on windows I sometimes use paint shop pro (I used to teach 7 so I'm comfortable in it) and it does the job. However when shooting a lot of raw the workflow is too slow, which is why I use aftershot instead. Trying to learn using Gimp more since it has enourmous power but have a bit of a steep treshold.

Due to other arrangements I didn't have the option to go somewhere with less surrounding light. As I still wanted to catch the moon tonight I tried to do something nice anyhow. Nothing special but I like the details and the sky.

Thank you for the heads up. I bought Bibble 5 pretty early so not for me. Although, I can't complain at that upgrade price.

It still have issues with pentax dng (k-5) in that it stops updating the image with applied effects if you work on alot of images (new for aftershot was that the histogram turn empty) but it's ok, I mostly do .pef.

I had gotten no mail but googled the subject of the (your)mail and found a page where all bibble owners can get that offer.

Bibble Labs: Latest Press Releases

Without your response I'm sure I wouldn't have found it, thanks a bunch! Hell yes I'm getting it for that price, if not just to make sure I can get upgrade price later on :)

Do you have any contact information or instructions for getting that 19.99 upgrade? (I'm a Bibble 5 pro user). Sounds like a really good deal to me :) I can only find the 79 upgrade offer on the homepage.

Cheers

Does anyone know if it is possible to date when a lens was manufactured based on it it has "Made in G.D.R." on it? I guess one can assume it might have changed around the 90's but... It would also be interesting if someone knew more about these particular lenses.

Trying to renew my interest in photography I went trough my manual lenses and discovered I have two Pentacon 3.5 30mm, one with G.D.R printed on it and one without (went hiking today so I have attached some images from the non G.D.R one, I like the colors).

Thanks

It performed over expectations for sure.

Your words.. kinda... give me some comfort... When I first started with manual lenses, I bought a M/S 55/1.7 and being curious I opened it up to see how it worked and clean it, however I never managed to put it back together. If you had wroten 55/1.7 was a killer compared to this.. well :)

So nice of you to always take the time to comment posts Steve!

In case someone is interested. Some pictures to show of the "technical" quality of the lens.

Brought along the lens while spending the day with a friend. I have a bunch of manual lenses, and this will be a keeper together with chinon and takumar lenses.

Camera was a K-7 with M42 screw adapter.

imgp5753_100pzoom.jpg is what it says, a 100% zoom of imgp5753 to show off detail.

I have a few Chinon Lenses, some duplicates even in different shape.

I was out with our hovawart puppy Amiga yesterday and took some pictures that i really think show the sharpness of the lens. Unfortunately I didn't write down the aperture but I was taking pictures between 2 and 5.6.

The lens look like number three on this page, Manual Focus Lenses :: View topic - 3 x Auto Chinon 55/1.7 compared, with a leather "belt".

Thank you for the effort with the answer Steve. I had a laugh reading the "derailing" part.

Your list is very good and both you and Kuuan have convinced me not to bother with pictures taken with the lenses in favour of better descriptions and pictures of the lenses instead. The flickr tips is excellent. I haven't been that much on flickr and did not even think about using it that way.

Regarding the other forums. There are other forums!?! Ok, ok, I been on some but it is good that you point it out as I don't have that much knowledge about them.

I need to document the lenses for my own sake but after that it's time to start selling some off. You and Kuuan's tips will be very helpful. I'm wondering if live view will even increase the interest in "old" lenses. I find it fascinating to be able to set the focus on millimeter level on my m42's.

I also need to get a good light setup so i can get good pictures of the lenses.

Thanks and happy 2010.

Kuuan, thank you very much for a good reply. Much appreciated! I recognize the buying options you describe:) Mysel I have a lot of old cameras that came with the lenses so to speak.

I will be sure to describe it well. And then perhaps I should skip the pictures from the lens in favour of pictures of the lens.

Thank you

Hiya.

Ï have a question to fellow off-branders. I have something like 15 off brand lenses and it has somewhat become clear which are the ones I actually use and which ones are just laying there. I was a bit overoptimistic in the beginning but they have brought much fun and knowledge (I wouldn't have tried to put a rubberband in a new lens as I did with a Yashica lens to get it working without an aperture pin) too.

The question is. When selling these lenses (such as Chinon, Pentacon, Takumar, Mamyia and Rikkenon). What do I need to focus on in the ads on for instance ebay. Is it worth the trouble to take test shots with the lenses, if so, what kind shows the quality the best way? I am missing front and sometimes rear caps for some of them, is it worth getting that before selling and so on. If anyone has pointers of any kind I would be grateful.

Steve, let me know if this is totally off topic for the thread and should be moved to the buy/sell parts. I think it qualify here since I am not looking to get the max amount of money for them but rather to make sure the optimistic off brand buyers get the whole "picture".

Thank you very much

Hej

Was out in the southern parts of Sweden. Was eager to try out a Pentacon 2.8/135mm. Also had a smc takumar 1.8/55mm. The Pentacon have been praised for a nice bokeh so I was kind of excited trying it out. The takumar, not that off-brand, I know, but a nice picture anyways.

First one for the 55mm, the rest for 135mm. Camera is K10D with a m42 adapter.

Thanks as always for all the beautiful pics in the thread, amazing to see what the different lenses is capable of.

Ovim. Nice pictures and that is a great lens. I have a bunch of chinon lenses and they have turned into my favourites. I have 28, 35, several 50(1.4, 1.7, 1.9), 135. A couple in both m42 and k-mount. I really like the colors they produce.

I don't know that much about Chinon but didn't they make the lenses themself? They were a large manufacturer of film cameras (movies) and also camera bodies. Alot of the lenses floating around were standard lenses for system cameras. More information about the lenses can be found in the camera manuals. CHINON Camera Manuals have been a very nice resource. You can also have a look at Chinon - Camerapedia.org.

Happy shooting!

Some more, sort of off brand. I got a 50mm f1.4 auto-chinon lens from a friend at work. Tried to put it to use during the weeks before christmas and got some great images out of it, I think. Although, I had to use high ISO (400-800). This is the last one from the Chinon lenses. I got a pentacon 30mm/3.5 from the uk the other week that I will try out for a bit now (very cool small lens).

[QUOTE=247nino;431989]Bushnell 400mm f5.6 m42 lens, I am by no means a bird peeper, I was just out trying to use my lens which weighs my gear bag down.

Looking great I think. Very nice depth and sharpness. Definitely a lens to get som more "bird peeping" pics with!

Ohhh, nice bokeh with the jena, of course.

Nessar. Very nice "rich" colors there. There is something special about glass.

I turn my back for a day and suddenly there is a bunch of new nice pictures from odd lenses. I really like this thread, make using the lenses fun.

Hi

Two pictures taken tonight driving home from a birthday party of the sugar factory in Örtofta in Sweden, close to Lund.

Both images are taken with minimum aperture, infinite focus, 30 seconds. Cropped to 16:9. Pentax K10D. First image is taken with a Chinon 28mm 3.5, second a Chinon 50mm 1.7.

It might not show in this small format but I am very pleased with the sharpness and colors (first picture taken with the 28mm and the fifth with the 50mm so I havent tried them out in any other situations yet) and the Chinon lenses in general are turning into favourites. I do have a Pentacon 30mm and 50 mm that I have not yet taken any pictures with.
Cheers

Very nice photos Mike. I really like them, dramatic in a way.

They are a bit dark, I do have a calibrated monitor so I don't think that is why. Although, that might very well be the effect you were after also so it is definitely not an issue.

I haven't looked into Cosina lenses. Is it/they good you think in regards of color and sharpness in general? I am desperately in need of a wide angle like that.

Cheers
