This shot is of a US service member practicing his golf swing off the top of the Al Faw Palace in Baghdad Iraq. The lake is man made and surrounded by palaces that used to belong to Saddam, but now is the home of US Forces. I just found out it was selected as a "daily dozen" image on National Geographic's website.

Here's some more from that trip: Deployment 2011 - a set on Flickr

HA! It's always a task to get people to cooperate (especially the boys)... we were lucky to get the dog cooperating too. I was especially glad you can see the whites of her eyes.

The key to this particular shoot was the 'marshmallow bribe.'

My house is rarely serious, so we figured this might represent us best. Shot with a few Speedotron strobes and edited in Photoshop. Merry Christmas, everyone!

Thanks, Raylon... you got some great ones too. Nice and close! I didn't stay for the Blue Angels but wish I had. I work on the other side of the base and got a few shots when they were practicing but it was really overcast.

Thanks for the comments.

Sadly I don't have a good telephoto lens. The one I used was a super cheap ProSpec 70-210. I'd like to get a nice longer lens one of these days.

camera/lens cleaning

Hello, I'm in the military and will soon have to go back to the "sand box". I want to take my camera (K20D) and some lenses, but the dust there is terrible. It gets in everything. I was wondering if you anyone had some good recommendations for places that will completely clean cameras and lenses. Or, would it be better to just bring the cheap point and shoot? Thanks!

I am working on my B&W conversion this year. Of course my kids are frequent subjects. Any critiques of the look (lighting, composition, conversion, etc) would be appreciated.

Thanks, Ash. I'll try that for better separation.

rjburgos, I had one light with umbrella to the left of the camera and in front of the boy, the other light was to the right of the camera and just behind him. They were both about 18-24 inches above him.

I just got a great deal on some used Speedotron studio strobes. I finally had a chance to play with them and my boys cooperated for about 30 seconds. Here's one I got using 2 lights. Of course there is some post production in Photoshop. I'd appreciate any C&C

Thanks!
Dan

Here's a frog that looks like it's trying to hide under the stick. You can also see a baby under there. Took this with the FA50 1.4.

Thanks, Kenyee. This is an older one with the house hold sync connector. It should be ok if I get an adapter from that to PC and then a radio trigger, right? No voltage issue?

Thanks!

Anyone use any of the brown line speedotron strobes? I found some that are being sold locally for a pretty decent price. I just don't know much about them.

Thanks!

Thanks all for the comments and other things I can try on the next one. I only used burn and dodge tools. Most of the shots of him (my son) have very little color or detail to the eyes. This helped bring out some color.

I want to get some input on the post processing on the eyes of this shot. The original has almost no definition in the eye at all... it just looked like a dark circle. I'm just starting to try out this process. Thanks!

thanks for the comments. Yes... the background was mostly black, but I did have to get rid of some of the distractions around it.
