Pentax 645Z, 28-45 lens, 45-85 lens, and 120 Macro lens Asking Price
4,500.00 USD Item Location
Utah (United States) Item Description
I've decided to switch back to full-frame after experimenting with medium format, so selling my 645Z rig. The body was purchased here from another long-time member, the lenses in various places.
Pentax 645Z body, with box, manual, charger, 3 Pentax batteries and IR remote. Excellent condition and perfect working order. Has always had a screen protector on the rear screen. Very low shutter count of only 2921.
Pentax DA 645 28-45 F4.5 ED AW SR lens. The big one, pretty much unmatched for wide angle landscape, and one of only a couple Pentax lenses with in-lens stabilization. Bought last year from Arlington Camera in Texas. Mint condition cosmetically and perfect optically, with no dust, haze or fungus. Includes case, caps and lens hood.
Pentax FA 645 45-85 F4.5 Nice normal range AF zoom for 645. Excellent condition, no dust, haze or fungus. Includes case, caps and lens hood.
Pentax FA 645 120 F4 Macro. Super sharp AF macro lens. Excellent condition, no dust, haze or fungus. Includes case, caps and lens hood.
I'd prefer to sell all of this as a bundle for $4500.
For that price, I'll include insured shipping within the US and Paypal fee.
If you want individual items, message me and I may be willing to figure out separate prices.

It would be nice to have such a lens be a good option for wide angle astrophotography. Given the existing advantages of astrotracer.
Which means faster than 2.8. If Samyang can manage a 20mm 1.8, surely Pentax can get close to that?

Other than in terms of number of MP, not sure how this is so. Even the FF Sony sensors with fewer MP in the K-1 and D850 score significantly better than does the 5DSR in terms of dynamic range and noise. The A7R4 has more MP and better performance.

Let's say this is true. And they could then sell the body for 1/2 of what the Hassleblad and Phase One's go for. That's still $20-30K. Is there enough of a new market for a camera that expensive with people that don't already have a Hassleblad or Phase One, or aren't going to be happy with a stabilized 100 or 150MP Fuji(with PixelShift) that's 1/4 of that price?
I just don't see the economics working. As regular FF cameras get better and better, and computational capabilities get better and better, the advantage of an FF-MF sensor gets smaller and smaller and the number of people that can justify paying for that advantage gets smaller and smaller.

Fuji may not be running away from Pentax in terms of image quality. But in terms of units sold and revenue, I suspect that's true. I'd bet dinner on Fuji's MF revenue being several times larger than all the other MF companies put together.
As for full frame medium format being the future, that's a no more than a guess on your part. There's no evidence that anyone is going to be producing a reasonably priced full frame medium format sensor. Until that happens, it will be a niche part of an already niche market. There's not really any more evidence for that than there is for the future being digital 6x7.
Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with my 645z, and like the ergonomics much better than Fuji MF. If I were to move, it would be back to a K-1 or another high-end FF body, not to Fuji MF. But in terms of MF sales, appears to me that Fuji is running away with things.

It's not just the cost of the larger sensor. It's the cost of developing everything else around it. And that cost needs to be offset by likely much lower sales numbers, meaning much higher per unit price.
Plus how many of the modern Pentax lenses will support FF 645? Would buyers be willing just to use older MF lenses?

Yeah, with the new specs of the K3.3, you'd think they would have a good wildlife photographer market for a K mount version of the Sigma or Tamron 150-600. Maybe they are worried about poaching sales from the 150-450, but there were definitely times when I wanted more reach than 450.

While I didn't have a K-1 Mk2, I did have a Mk1, and now have a 645Z. I'm not so sure I'd say that the pixel shift files beat the 645Z files. For one, there's the static scene limitation. I did mostly landscape work with both, and there's just scenes where pixel shift ended up with annoying artifacts, due to a small amount of wind ruffling leaves in the foreground.
Plus if you're doing landscape(or product/archival work), the camera is mostly on a tripod and IBIS doesn't matter. Sometimes that's true of studio work too.
OTOH, if you're looking for a more all around camera, I'm with you, the K-1 is probably a better choice.

Yowza. Assuming you have an extra $7000 for a 1mm gain on the Pentax 25. That's where the problem is with this idea in general. Designing and manufacturing this sort of lens is costly, and the market is very small. Meaning that for any entity to see an ROI, the price has to be very high (which then limits the market even more).

I seem to recall hearing that one of the reasons the 25 was discontinued is that the front element was difficult and expensive to make at consistent high quality. That would tend to indicate that trying to crowd fund something like that would be tough.

Pixel Shift checks a lot of the same boxes as higher MP. And to get it, you have to have IBIS anyway, so it's a 2 for 1. Ideally both the 100MP sensor and IBIS/PS. Seems like that is the minimum needed to stay competitive with Fuji.
I could care less about video on a body like this, and I'd imagine that's true for most purchasers of MF cameras.

I hate to say it, but it seems like this is probably true. I don't think there is enough of a market to justify going up to FF645. Certainly not to digital 6x7. Those arts and academic organizations that are using Hassy or PhaseOne, they don't have the money to buy a whole new system.
What they can do it get a better sensor into the existing 645 body, add IBIS and pixelshift, and improve computational photography capabilities. All of that shouldn't require new sensors or massive redesigns. And there will be people who choose Pentax over Fuji. Those who want an OVF. And those who actually like a bigger body. I don't get the fad of trying to make FF and MF bodies smaller. I want a sizable grip and good ergonomics to go with the larger lenses.

Like others, my experience with buying from Japan, both for K mount and medium format, has been very good. Look at the description and the pictures, not just the rating. And pay close attention to what's included, such as lens hoods. But there's good deals to be found, and the descriptions for the things I've bought have been pretty accurate.

Well, it's definitely not expensive compared to the number of $5000+ pro cameras coming out from the other manufacturers. Sony, Nikon and Canon all bringing out one or more new bodies at that level. If there's that much of a market for those, surely the K3.3 doesn't look too bad.

My experience was that the long end of the 150-450 was great. So I'd certainly take that over the DA*300 cropped.
As far as very long telephoto shots are concerned, atmospheric turbulence and a haze are definitely an issue. You can have the best camera and lens in the world and still be stuck if it's hot and/or hazy.

Comparing prices at launch is entirely valid. The camera industry is not like the computer industry. In computers, prices have been relatively flat for a long time, despite massive improvements in performance and functionality. Spending $1000 on a desktop now gets one a lot more than $1000 did 5 years ago.
On the other hand, the Canon R5 launched at $3900, compared to the D850 launching at $3300. While buying the Canon might get you some improvements over the Nikon, you are paying a not insignificant amount more.
The K3M3 might be getting you some improvements over the D500. We won't know without more testing, but it sounds like almost certainly better IQ and DR. For it to deliver that at essentially the same launch price is not bad. Obviously, if you need a camera now and have only a $1700 budget, or want specific Nikon lenses, like big telephotos, then your choice is more obvious.

I'm not too bent out of shape relative to the price. Adjusted for inflation, it's less than what the D500 was. The big question...can it match D500 AF performance? If so, and assuming that Pentax has the expected bump in image quality, they may have a winner. That said, it would still be nice to have a Tamron or Sigma 200-600 option for this if they are going after the wildlife/sports market.
I won't say anything about the lack of tilt screen ;)

I'd agree with the others, the 150-450 is too big to go on the Peak clip on a shoulder strap. I've done long hikes(10+miles) with that system, but only with smaller setups, like the KP and 55-300. Not sure I'd advise hiking long distances with the camera and lens on the tripod either. Not great from a weight/carrying perspective or a risk perspective. That's a lot of weight and leverage to be hanging off the mount for a long time, potentially banging into things. The hip mount seems a better idea, or use a shoulder sling and switch sides periodically.
I'd also consider a travel tripod or monopod and a ballhead instead of a pistol grip as a lighter setup.

I'd vote for the first one. The train gives it interesting character, makes it more than just a landscape. The second one, the train is so small, that character is lost, and it's just a landscape...a good one, but one without the little extra that the larger train adds to the first one.

The water crossing one is working for me. So either it's config specific, or you fixed it.
And yes, Toyotas are boring, if by boring you mean very dependable, and with very low depreciation. This is particularly true with their trucks and SUVs, which rank very high on lists of vehicles most likely to go over 200K miles, and to have the best resale value. Speaking as a 4runner owner for the last 7 years, and I have had to do nothing other than routine maintenance. And I don't baby it, driving on and off road all over the west. Sort of has Pentax level durability :-)

Sounds like Sony has announced rumored 127MP MF sensor. Sony announces 127.68MP global shutter sensor?*is a Fujifilm GFX 125 on the way? | Digital Camera World
It is the same cropped MF size as currently used by Fuji and Pentax. Honestly something like this seems a lot more likely as a next move for Pentax than a move to full sized MF. I'm not sure that market is big enough to support more than one player with the improvements in crop MF and pixel shift type functionality in FF. Could Pentax justify the R&D cost based on a very small numbers of very expensive sales they would get there?

I'm not sure I get all the praise for the new Fuji being smaller. They haven't made the lenses any smaller or less heavy, so if anything, a smaller body is less ergonomic in terms of balancing the bigger, heavier MF lenses. Plus in my experience, MF cameras are on tripods a significant amount of the time, and in that case size doesn't really matter.
That said, kudos to Fuji for getting the price down. To be competitive, I think Pentax will have to either go way up market with the larger sensor(which will be a risky and expensive move, and not supported by much modern glass), or just add IBIS and pixelshift to the current body, while maintaining a relatively low price. That seems a more likely option to me.
