How did you become a Pentaxian ?

In 7th grade, I had a friend who loved cameras - his entire family was into them. They had a darkroom in their basement. He got me hooked. I was a poor kid, and didn't have much money, but if you signed up for the school newspaper and yearbook, they would loan you a camera for the year. The camera that was loaned to me was a Pentax K1000. I shot countless rolls of film. It took two summers, but at the beginning of 9th grade, I'd saved up enough money to buy my own K1000 - I still have it. I bought a couple of lenses, one 28mm very expensive lens (especially for a poor kid), which turned out to be a favorite. Changing platforms was never an option - I started procuring more lenses and Pentax kept making bodies that were backwards compatible - I've never wanted to switch platforms. :-)

What is the lens that lives on your camera?

I love to travel and this lens gives me a balance between decent landscape shots and some telephoto shots. It's my go-to lens...but I always a have a couple of other lenses with me. :)

Springtime in the desert amazing. I was lucky enough to catch a bee that had clearly been busy - the pollen was so thick it obscured it's anatomy. :-)

UPDATE: At the last minute, I looked at the specs again and decided on a K3II, instead. Just call me a gutless flip flopper. ;-)

First, I wanted to say thank you to everyone who offered opinions and provided guidance. I appreciate it more than you know, and I'm continually impressed at how friendly and helpful everyone is, so thanks!

What did I decide? Well, my decision was based around two things, which follow:
1. Lenses. Many of you told me to invest in lenses, which I already have been for years. I have 3 lenses that I take with me everywhere: Pentax DA* 16-50MM, 1:2.8; Pentax DA 18-55MM, 1:3.5-5.6; and, a Pentax DFA 100MM, 1:2.8 macro.
2. Features vs. Price Point. While I could buy the K-1, people said a lot of great things about the KP and the K3II as well as the K70. And, in fact, the K70 was in my final 2.

DECISION: I am going forward with the Pentax KP and the Pentax DFA 50MM, 1:2.8 lens. I decided that I do want to work towards a full frame camera, and maybe in a year or so I can get a great deal on a used K-1 or perhaps Pentax will come out with another full frame body. The KP gives me the features I want, future proofs me for a few years, and allows me to leverage some great lenses that have been my favorites for some time.

SO, there you have it. As many of you said, it would have been hard to make a bad choice given such a great product line up. I'm a huge Pentax fan - I always have been. I have no desire to move to another platform, so I'm glad for all the choices (even though it made choosing a challenge).

Thanks again everyone for all the help and guidance - you're an awesome group. :)

Mainly, it's the pixels. No, I will probably never blow up an image to fit the size of a wall. I do think, though, that more pixels mean more information, more information means more detail, and more detail means I can capture macro images and fine lines better with a camera in the 24MP range than one in the 6MP range. My K-01 is a 16MP camera, but I find as I get older I like the viewfinder and diopter combo instead of the screen accommodates my reading vision issues better. Also, I like the wider ISO ranges available on the newer models compared with the *ist DS.

Well, now that is something bigger to think about. Maybe I should be looking at full frame. The subject of my post continues to be relevant...too many choices.

I'm essentially ready to upgrade my Pentax body and get a new lens. I'm willing to spend some cash to do this, because it's been several years and I'm ready for an upgrade. I'll be moving from an *ist DS and a K-01 to a...well, that's the problem. I'm a hobbyist photographer that enjoys landscapes and capturing a beautiful sunset, Taking pictures of flowers, and having a good camera to take family photos on occasion. Lately, I feel the old passion of photography growing again, so I find myself using my cameras more and more. For the first time in several years I am feeling the limitations of my gear.

I could be convinced to buy the K1, but it truly is overkill for me, I think. I just don't know that I'd use it enough to justify the price. I like the price of the KP and the fact it's an APS-C camera, but I like the K3II features a bit more. I've heard rumors that the K3II will be replaced this year and end up being an APS-C camera that sits between the K1 and KP, so this seems ideal - but it is a rumor so I'm not certain.

SO, my question is do I buy a very expensive camera that is probably overkill; or, do I buy an affordable camera that doesn't quite have the feature list I would like; or, do I wait for a K3II replacement?

Does anyone have any thoughts or guidance? Thanks in advance! :-)

New to the thread...picking up an old passion/hobby

Hi everyone. I've enjoyed reading the forum for years, but never joined. I've loved photography and Pentax gear for decades. I discovered the passion during high school where I was never caught without my k-1000. I was an avid contributor to my HS newspaper and yearly annual. Over the years, I've had a few k1000s (still have them). I spent about two years working in LA carrying around a 645 - that was a fun summer. I can't afford one, myself, but perhaps one day.

I moved on and got busy with life. I transitioned from film to DSLR in 2006 when I bought an *istDS. I enjoyed learning on that camera and was happy I could use many of my old lenses, which I have quite a few. About four years later, I bought an K20Ds. I didn't use it much, and realized I had forgotten so much of how to use a camera. Plus, moving from the old days of fully manual cameras to cameras heavy with tech, has presented a challenge for me. If you don't use it every day, it's easily forgotten. My most recent camera is a K-01, again, I need to use it every day.

So, now I'm looking at a new camera (seems like every 4 years is the mark). I'll probably get a K-3 II. I'm looking around, though, just to get a feel for what people are saying. It seems like the forum is filled with helpful and nice members. I hope I live up to your standards - and thanks in advance for all your help and advice. :)
