I agree. I've had a (brief) look at the 15-30mm f/2.8 and it is a superb lens BUT it is seriously big and heavy and does not take filters unless you get a dedicated adapter that requires 150mm filters, which are themselves big and bulky (and expensive). I expect Ricoh did a double deal with Tamron to remanufacture the 24-70 and 15-30 but I am disappointed they did not opt for either a 16/17-35 f/2.8 or f/4 like Canikon have in their ranges or a prime in the 18-20mm range. I found a Voigtlander 20mm f/3.5 to fill this gap.

Nicely seen but the background is a bit distracting. You could have blurred it more by turning the camera to vertical format and moving closer to the subject (assuming you could get closer). Using the lens wide open would also hep even if you had to push the ISO another stop higher or by practice good hand-holding technique you should be able to hold the camera steady at 1/60 or even 1/30.

I have not tested the lens myself but from reading other reviews:
  • The lens is way too long with poor centre of gravity and fixed tripod mount (faces the wrong way) is almost impossible to balance on gimbal heads without a ridiculously long bracket.

  • f/5.6 is not wide enough if you want to add a TC

  • Allegedly has vignetting on FF

  • Suffers from excessive CA

As others have said, this is one of the great debates in photo gear and, like most great debates, is completely polarising (pun intended...keep reading!) but I don't think anyone on either side of the argument has ever been persuaded to cross the floor. There are good and bad arguments for both sides of this one but at risk of derision and scorn...if you MUST put a filter on your lens, for general, walking about photography, I use a good quality (=not cheap!) circular polariser. Yes, you lose 1-2 stops of light but, unless you're in low light, that won't matter too much and a polariser will improve many photographs.

Thanks redpit :)
My point exactly but you've expressed it more articulately than I.

Well, no it doesn't. I've been using Pentax gear for 40 years and, in that time, have collected a lot of gear. A change to Nikon/Canon would mean spending a lot more than $8-$15K to replace everything I have. Not to mention the learning curve to switch to an entirely new system. To be honest, I am surprised at the negative reaction to my and a few others' comments on our desire to have Ricoh add this sort of lens to their Pentax product line. I fail to see how adding this lens could be a problem for those who don't want one. I suspect that if Ricoh committed to developing and marketing this sort of lens they would be more likely to also commit to other high quality lenses as well.

I agree about the lagging AF-C tracking...but the most obvious scenario for needing this is with a long/fast lens shooting wildlife or sport...committing to both would improve both.

True if starting from scratch but with thousands already invested, I don't want to change systems just add the extra lens.

I wish they'd bite the bullet and produce a serious long tele with wide aperture for sport/wildlife, e.g., 500 or 600mm f/4 instead of the ridiculous 560mm broomstick currently on the books (what were they thinking?). Yes, I know that this is a specialised (and therefore not wide market appeal) segment of the lens market but there's nothing, even from the 3rd party manufacturers, like this for PK mount. Sigma's new 500mm f/4 is not available for Pentax :-(

Hi everyone,
I'm a long time reader of Pentax Forums and finally decided to bite the bullet and join up so I can contribute. I'm a nature, wildlife and landscape photographer (in my, all to infrequent, spare time) based on the coast of Victoria in Australia.

Cheers, Ian
