So it is normal to have to do some work in PS or LR to get the image to look like what I was shooting. That is good to know. I have an older version of Lightroom, but no skills in it. I imagine I have been very lucky in the past not having to do post processing. I have mainly had Sony point and shoot type cameras after I stopped shooting film.
I will post some Raw files from a recent Grand Canyon trip. I will try to upload this evening or tomorrow.
Thank you all again. There is a lot of knowledge to be gained here. I imagine most of this is user error.

I did not have SR off while on the tripod. I actually had the thought that tripod plus SR would mean even higher level of sharpness! I shoot RAW and JPEG. Assumed RAW would have better results because of more info captured. Didn't think that it would be a different look. I've also heard live view can produce better results. So much to learn about the demands of digital. Definitely more to it than my ME Super with a roll of Kodachrome.

Is getting an exposure value from a light meter and grey card still a viable thing?

---------- Post added 04-13-18 at 02:28 PM ----------

Also, I generally shoot in AV mode with auto white balance.

I appreciate all of the responses!
I had a K-7 prior with a sigma DG I think it was a 17-50 and loved it.
I was not aware that f22 could cause issues. I've always heard of avoiding wide open if possible. 90% of problems are with the 16-50 at the wider focal lengths. I will post some examples as soon as I can.
Thank you again!

I have a K-3 silver with a DA* 16-50, DA* 50-135, DA* 60-250, 100 macro etc. All very good glass supposedly.
I'm having issues with sharpness, color, and general image quality. Big issues. f22, on a tripod, focus locked, 1/250th or higher ss, and still fuzzy with bad color. I'm hoping there is someone local that would be willing to check it out and maybe help with adjustments. (back focus, front focus....I have no idea) Especially with the 16-50. Maybe it's just a bad one? I get better pictures with my Samsung galaxy phone. I have a lot invested in this setup and have been nothing but disappointed. I also need to do a screw drive mod since the SDM is failing on 2 lenses. Since it's a Pentax, camera stores just tell me to "upgrade" to a Canon or Nikon because they are "better". I've seen stellar photographs from all makes, so I don't buy into the one is so much better than another argument, but this setup is killing me. I just want to figure out what I'm doing wrong, or what may be happening with my gear. Any LOCAL leads would be appreciated! Always easier to figure things out with camera in hand.Thank you!

I'm into it for $150, now. It is absolutely mint, so it should work well. Going to keep it, but needed the AF. My eyes are not what they used to be, so fast MF focusing is not happening. Not sure how that will work with wildlife, but we'll see. Going to keep a lookout for an AF version. Also eyeballing a Sigma 120-400. Maybe I'll find a good used copy sub 400.

Just looked at the warranty card that came with it. Serial number matches and it says it is the manual focus 400 5.6 Apo macro k-pr.
It figures that I would get the lens that no one has ever heard of, haha.
It's in perfect shape and just as it came from the factory, I guess.

I had sent the comment about the limiting switch before I saw your comment about the MF mount.

I'm totally believing you about the mount. I emailed the guy and told him that I would be open to either returning it for a full refund, or keeping it and getting a partial refund.

If I end up keeping it, I imagine removing that Ricoh pin would be wise?

There is so much I don't know about all of the k mount incarnations. Throw in that it's third party... It looked AF, he said it was AF, so I went for it. Was super excited to get it for so little, too. Oh, well, the search continues.

Thank you all for the replies. I do appreciate all of the help and knowledge here!

HELP! Sigma 400 5.6 questions

Hi,

I just bough a used Sigma 400 5.6 APO Telemacro. It is the 77mm front element one. There is no writing on what is supposed to be the AF/MF selector ring other than "sigma", "77mm" and "lens made in japan" Appears to be an autofocus lens, but it does not autofocus, and that ring does not move. Either it's broken, or is the strangest looking sigma 400 MF I've ever seen. I have the 400 5.6 MF, and it looks nothing like this. Did they make one without the selector switch? serial number is 1004638.

---------- Post added 04-20-17 at 02:51 PM ----------

Also, there is a gold spring loaded contact where the screw drive would normally be. I'm so confused! Is this possibly not a k-mount even though it mounts to my camera? (for some other brand camera that uses the same bayonet mount, but different contact configuration?)

---------- Post added 04-20-17 at 03:05 PM ----------

Just to clarify:
Lens does not autofocus when mounted to my K-3 or my K-200D
There is no AF/MF marking on the selector ring and that ring does not move
There is a gold contact where the cameras screw drive would normally engage
Lens is absolutely beautiful other than that and I would love to be able to make it work. Does anyone know of any repair shops that would be able to figure it out? Does anyone on here really know their way around these and want to take a crack at it?
Should I not bother with any of it and return for refund or ask for partial refund and hope to fix it? I already have the early 90's manual focus version.
Any help/insight/miracles are welcome
Thank you!
