Ive never used my 28-300 on my K100D (only on my K10D) but I dont know why it would hunt while autofocusing just because it is on the K100D. As for the focal length of 6.3, of course at lower light levels its going to be difficult to focus, as on any body, including the K10D. I do not understand your question about shutter speeds. Of course an appropriate shutter speed must be selected for proper exposure and conditions.

I am not offended at at all, but I doubt if you will find many interested people since, presumably, the great majority of people using the Pentax Forums use Pentax equipment, not Canon. Its too bad that dpreview does not have a marketplace.

Pentax K20D vs Canon 40D

I have owned a Pentax K100D/K10D but currently own a Canon 40D with a 70-300 IS Zoom. I have never had an issue with dust being sucked inside and I have had it in the Galapagos Islands for 2 weeks. I am not arguing that the Pentax K20D is not an excellent camera. I am sure it is, but I have heard very little and have no experience with dust being a problem with the Canon 40D or its lenses. Maybe your lens in particular was defective, but it is not generally the case.
By the way, the reason I switched from Pentax to Canon after owning the K100D/K10D was not primarily the body, but the lack of suitable telephoto zooms available for it. When it was obvious that the new DA* 60-250 was nowhere in sight, I decided to buy a Canon 40D. The Canon 70-300 lens is superb for being non-L. I also have noticed much improvement in autofocusing in lower light with the 40D compared to the K10D, and of course the 6 fps was very useful in the Galapagos when shooting birds. Its a fine camera, but I do not plan on upgrading to the 50D. The K20D, from what I have read, is a fine camera in its own right too. I just prefer the 40D for my uses. --Terry

I agree with much of what you said, but one trifling thing that concerns me is leaving my camera in the car on a hot day with the windows closed, when I cant or dont want to take it with me outside for some reason, for example when I go grocery shopping or whatever. Is it unsafe for the camera to leave it in hot temperatures or am I being paranoid?

Wow! I didnt know I had so many replies. I wasnt notified by email of all of them :) Thanks very much for your comments and for trying out the puzzle. It is much appreciated. Most of your times are a lot faster than mine. I need to find out if my photo is going to be published in the print National Geographic magazine now. My Galapagos Tortoise has been very good to me and I intend to look him up when I go back to the Galapagos next May :D

My Gigantic Galapagos Tortoise is being very good to me! National Geographic first chose my photo as one of the Daily Dozen on August 9 and now I just found out they made an online Jigsaw Puzzle out of the image!!! Check this out:
National Geographic Magazine

Its in the top left, in the revolving image viewer. Just wait for the tortoise to appear or click on Number 2 for it to show up. If you click on the image, it will take you to the Your Shot Jigsaw Puzzle Generator page and then to get to my puzzle to play it you have to go to Page 8. That is, IF you want to do it! I tried it and there is no way I can figure out the puzzle :)
I was totally amazed to see it !!!!!! Its quite astonishing to see my tortoise image on National Geographic's web site and then they make a puzzle out of it!!! I really have to take my camera out more! National Geographic is making my month! :)

Thanks very much roentarre. To be honest now Im not quite sure from what lot they choose 2 from for publication. From the description on the web site, "From
the Daily Dozen, two photos will be published monthly in National Geographic magazine", it sounds like they choose 2 from each daily dozen. If that is the case though, that means 60 (2 per each daily dozen) will be published each month. But since National Geographic is a monthly magazine, that seems like too many to be published every month. So its possible they select 2 for all the daily dozens in each month (720 photos for the month of August). With the first option my odds are 1 in 6. With the second option my odds are 1 in 360. If it happens it happens, if it doesnt, it doesnt :) At least I was selected for their online Daily Dozen :)

Thanks Scott! When I entered the photo, I really didnt expect to see it win, although I was hoping of course. I submitted it August 9 and didnt even check online to see if it was selected until last night and found it to be in the daily dozen for August 9!! Its amazing to me and encouraging too. Now if it is actually published in the National Geographic magazine...... :D

Woo hoo! My gigantic tortoise I shot on Santa Cruz, Galapagos Island was selected by the National Geographic photo editor as one of the daily dozen for August 9, Week Two! I just found out, ha! Out of the daily dozen, two will be selected for publication in the National Geographic magazine in future issues!! That means a one in twelve chance!! Pardon me for bursting with enthusiasm but I had never thought a photo of mine may appear in National Geographic :) If you want to see it, its here: Your Shot Daily Dozen - National Geographic Magazine Its a flash image viewer. Click on the text above the thumbnails, "Week Two" and look for the big tortoise. :D

I particularly like 2, 3, 6 and 7. The first one is honestly not so hot by my eyes in that its eyes are totally obscured. The 6th one, in my opinion is the finest in that its beautiful, sharp and I can see the glint in the bird's eye. Its very very nice. Thank you for sharing.

I agree. I think that 95% of photography is composition, lighting and dedication. The rest is equipment and post processing ;)

Sinan, I love the compositions on many of your images, very nice.
Also Zenfolio does look very good. In fact Im almost tempted to dump my own photo web site that I designed myself for my images in favor of Zenfolio. I think Zenfolio would be much less work and actually cost me much less in web hosting fees, at $40/yr for the unlimited service and I can keep my own domain name. But I would like to have more control over the page layout and design than they currently allow, since Im used to doing it all myself now and thats half the fun of a photo gallery site, in my opinion :D Its something for me to think about anyway.

I especially like the 7th and the last 2 images. It looks like the Bigma worked great for you! Its a very nice series of images. I sometimes want it very much, but I wonder if I could reasonably manage to use it on a trip to the Galapagos Islands next May.....considering its weight and bulk.
