What is your eBay success rate on vintage cameras?

I have a 100% success rate with maybe 30-40 purchases, but I don't buy low-ball, and go for one of the better ones I can find, and always buy ones with a clear statement in the listing that it works 100%.

I use Apple Aperture (discontinued years ago) which displays all my photos on a map. It still works fine, I'm surprised it broke on Lightroom?

General EVF discussion

I have an old mirrorless (Sony Nex 6). I don't love the EVF--its better than a rangefinder style viewfinder, where it only approximated the field of view, but not as nice as most SLR style optical viewfinders. I shoot 100% manual focus on it and I find the resolution (2.4mpx) too low and contrast and contrast too high for me to manual focus as is. Focus peaking doesn't really help, so I have to use the MF zoom combined with focus peaking on every shot. That fine for a camera that cost me $100 and a handful of lenses that cost about $100 each, but even the most current Sony APS-C camera (A6600) still has a 2.4mpx EVF. I haven't tried one, but I do wonder if 10 years has seen improvements in the other ways.

I also wonder if there are other options they could do to improve manual focusing? Most MF era film SLRs had a focus aid in the center of the screen--split prism, micro prisms or similar. I wonder if they could do something on an EVF like a small circle in the center that is always on 4.5x magnification? or would that be too distracting? Have other mirrorless cameras come up with better trick?

I had the same thought, but then thought--I don't know if I want to dig that deep just to deal with occasionally resetting the date. Resetting the date won't destroy the camera, me with a screwdriver might.

you mean like "I can't use a filter with the hood on" since the hood bayonets on, so I can't fit a filter between the lens and the hood?

Black & White Photography – Your Thoughts

I shoot 98% B&W. I feel like a tourist* when I shoot color because due to color blindness I see color differently than most, and I couldn't color grade an image to save my life, and I truly don't understand color. While I don't see in B&W, it is something I can reasonable adjust to taste. If I shoot color, I just accept the colors as is because adjusting them would create a weird alien world that no one would recognise as earth.

* When I say "tourist" I don't mean literally. A american tourist in Paris goes to all the obvious spots, and eats all the obvous foods. I am a tourist in the world of color--the only thing I can do with color is the obvious, and have no concept of subtlety in color.

What Lens Do You Use the Most?

My most used lens is schizophrenic, because I have an identical lens in multiple focal lengths—the Kodak Wide Field Ektar. I have the 80mm, 100mm, 135mm, and 190mm (I haven’t found an affordable 250mm yet.). Obviously they are all view camera lenses, but I used them on 6x9, 4x5, 5x7, and 8x10 (and occasionally, Instax Wide.). The smaller ones would be fun to adapt to a digital camera, but I haven’t tried.

IR "Good" performers vs "Bad" - why bother using lenses unsuitable for IR?

I simply picked a few lenses, tested them on IR, and the rest of my lenses don’t get used on the IR camera. In my case (because I prefer primes) I’m using the XS 40, 21 limited, and 70 limited. That’s one with a 27mm filter and two with 49mm filters. No need to adapt all your lenses. In my case, since I’m only using a few lenses, i opted for a filter per lens instead of adapters.

I've been using Zomei 760 and 850 filters bought off of eBay. they're good enough for my purposes (I'm not hyper-anal-retentive about resolution, so I don't need a B&W or Heliopan filter.)

well the 850 and the 830 will be very close--take what you can find. There is clearly enough sensitivity beyond 850 that I could handhold that shot at ƒ8 and 1/50 and ISO 100--thats only 3 stops down from what regular camera would do.

I think the issue with full spectrum is it will let UV and IR through so you’ll get somewhat washed out images (from the examples I’ve seen.). My expectation is that post conversion the camera will be dedicated to the purpose you converted it (that why I didn’t convert a $2k camera.) I primarily wanted the HIE look, i.e. only IR light longer than 830nm, but if I had that filter installed inside the camera I couldn’t do the “aerochrome” color IR look (prior to this all my infrared photography was on film so I think in terms of the look of various IR films.). So I went with the 590nm filter which means, filterless I get the Aerochrome look, but I can easily stack a 830nm filter. It’s a little more cumbersome to shoot B&W IR but not bad. Right now I’m using a 40mm XS lens primarily (with a 27mm filter), but the camera bag has a 21 limited and a 70 limited which both take a 49mm filter. I’ve been very pleased with the results. I’ll see if I can post something later.

the K-01 returned home from Isaac Szabo for conversion to IR, and so far, its pretty d@mn cool! I can confirm that the XS 40 and the limited 70 work quite well--no hotspot. I'll have to get used to framing shots using the LCD on the back instead of a viewfinder (my one gripe on an otherwise nice little camera), but so far it feels like a poor man's HIE, with aerochrome thrown into the bargain.

are you happy with switching to FF?

I like having my lenses do what I expect of them. As a 95% film shooter, I have a bunch of film-era lenses that work fine on APS-C, but give you a very different field of view compared to my film camera. So I need to have an ultra wide lens to get a moderate wide field of view. In some cases, like using the Pentax macro bellows and slide copier, it actually makes it very difficult to find a lens that fits and works within the bellows limit of the setup. With FF, any of the 50mm lenses (preferably macro) works perfectly.

My K-01 looses the date/time when I remove the battery, but not between power cycles with the battery in it. I only recently bought it, then sent it off for IR conversion, but this thread got me thinking, will I lose other settings? If I set a custom white balance for the IR, or make other config settings, will it retain those, or does it reset all the settings as well?

Bulk loaded film with SF10?
Posted By abruzzi

the easiest, if you are using used commercial casettes, is to just match iso, so you load the 400 iso film on a casette that was formerly for 400 iso film. There was a shop in the UK that sold adhesive stickers with the DX coding that you could add to casettes, but I don't remember where they were. Or you could takeup the difference using exposure compensation if the camera supports it--400 is two stops more sensitive than 100, so if you load 400 speed film but the camera things its 100 then set exposure compensation to -2.

EDIT: I just looked and the SF10 doesn't do exposure compensation either...

Bulk loaded film with SF10?

I don't know the SF10 at all, but auto rewind usually works by detecting resistance--when it can't pull anymore film out, it rewinds. With a bulk loaded roll, the possible issue is how well its taped to the spool in the casette. I always run about 2 inches of scotch tapefrom the film, around the spool, and onto the film on the other side, and I've never had issues with any of my auto advance cameras, even ones like the Nikon F4 that advances very fast.

For auto loading, just do your best to cut a tongue about the size/shape of the tongue of a commerciallay spooled roll and it should be fine.

The other potential issues with bulk loaded film in an automated camera is DX coding. Some cameras were made to only set the film speed based on the DX markings, which your bulk casette is unlikely to have. I don't know the SF10, but if it can set the ISO manually, this won't be an issue, if it can't, it will probably default to ISO 100 or some other number.

Pentax 645D usability in 2021?

we'll see. Last month I spent $1800 on a K-1ii and kit lens, so I think it will be some time before I can afford another $2k camera! The K-1 will primarily be used to digitize film (thats actually why I bought it), but I did take it on a trip to SE Utah. I'm a sucker for CCD colors though, which is why the D intrigues me (I've also looked at older phase one and sinar digital backs for my LF cameras, but support for those is spotty.)

the cheap, $100 brand new XS arrived today from Japan, and is really new, but given that all the paperwork inside is in Japanese I assume I won't have any warranty. My K-01 is off being "modified" so I tested the lens on my K-3ii, and everything seems fine. Its definitely tiny, even compared to 40mm limited.

Universal grip for film camera

every camera is a different size so its unlikely that something universal could fit any camera, but there are lots that are specific to a range of similar sized cameras. I have this on on my F2:

Camera Grip for Nikon F2AS, F2A, F2SB, F2S, F2 Photomic, F2 cameras hand grip | eBay

Its very nice, solid metal. If you're ok with 3D printed stuff there is the butter grips:

Finally rolling it back to SLR. Seeking answers on FA Limited lenses

You can actually use the aperture-less lenses on cameras as far back as the SuperProgram/SuperA with one limitation—you need to use it in a mode where the camera picks the aperture, i.e program or shutter priority. I’ve used the DA 40 limited on my Super Program a number of times. With the AF film cameras, it seems like Pentax had two lines, one allowed setting the aperture on the camera body—that line culminated with the PZ-1p. The other line was layer out more like older film cameras, and while still having all the modes, going into aperture priority was done through turning the aperture ring off of A and selecting the aperture using the ring. This line culminated with the MZ-S, and has the same limitations at the SuperProgram—aperture-less lenses can only be used it program or shutter priority.
