Pentax 645n/645nii vs 67

I had the same consideration a few months ago, and ended up with the 67. The 645N is a more modern camera than a 67, in the sense that it has a lot of conveniences: autofocus, autoexposure, power winder. It turns out that that was exactly what I was trying to get away from—I was looking to focus on the process of photography.
With the 67, I just went for the newest I could afford, so I went with a 67, not a 6x7. The main reason was age. Functionally a 67 and a 6x7 MLU are basically identical, but the 6x7 MLU could be as old as ~1975, whereas the 67 was introduced in 1990, so I was guaranteed a certain maximum age.

I had the same thought, but then thought--I don't know if I want to dig that deep just to deal with occasionally resetting the date. Resetting the date won't destroy the camera, me with a screwdriver might.

Black & White Photography – Your Thoughts

I shoot 98% B&W. I feel like a tourist* when I shoot color because due to color blindness I see color differently than most, and I couldn't color grade an image to save my life, and I truly don't understand color. While I don't see in B&W, it is something I can reasonable adjust to taste. If I shoot color, I just accept the colors as is because adjusting them would create a weird alien world that no one would recognise as earth.

* When I say "tourist" I don't mean literally. A american tourist in Paris goes to all the obvious spots, and eats all the obvous foods. I am a tourist in the world of color--the only thing I can do with color is the obvious, and have no concept of subtlety in color.

General EVF discussion

I have an old mirrorless (Sony Nex 6). I don't love the EVF--its better than a rangefinder style viewfinder, where it only approximated the field of view, but not as nice as most SLR style optical viewfinders. I shoot 100% manual focus on it and I find the resolution (2.4mpx) too low and contrast and contrast too high for me to manual focus as is. Focus peaking doesn't really help, so I have to use the MF zoom combined with focus peaking on every shot. That fine for a camera that cost me $100 and a handful of lenses that cost about $100 each, but even the most current Sony APS-C camera (A6600) still has a 2.4mpx EVF. I haven't tried one, but I do wonder if 10 years has seen improvements in the other ways.

I also wonder if there are other options they could do to improve manual focusing? Most MF era film SLRs had a focus aid in the center of the screen--split prism, micro prisms or similar. I wonder if they could do something on an EVF like a small circle in the center that is always on 4.5x magnification? or would that be too distracting? Have other mirrorless cameras come up with better trick?

Pentax 645D usability in 2021?

we'll see. Last month I spent $1800 on a K-1ii and kit lens, so I think it will be some time before I can afford another $2k camera! The K-1 will primarily be used to digitize film (thats actually why I bought it), but I did take it on a trip to SE Utah. I'm a sucker for CCD colors though, which is why the D intrigues me (I've also looked at older phase one and sinar digital backs for my LF cameras, but support for those is spotty.)

IR "Good" performers vs "Bad" - why bother using lenses unsuitable for IR?

I simply picked a few lenses, tested them on IR, and the rest of my lenses don’t get used on the IR camera. In my case (because I prefer primes) I’m using the XS 40, 21 limited, and 70 limited. That’s one with a 27mm filter and two with 49mm filters. No need to adapt all your lenses. In my case, since I’m only using a few lenses, i opted for a filter per lens instead of adapters.

I've been using Zomei 760 and 850 filters bought off of eBay. they're good enough for my purposes (I'm not hyper-anal-retentive about resolution, so I don't need a B&W or Heliopan filter.)

well the 850 and the 830 will be very close--take what you can find. There is clearly enough sensitivity beyond 850 that I could handhold that shot at ƒ8 and 1/50 and ISO 100--thats only 3 stops down from what regular camera would do.

I think the issue with full spectrum is it will let UV and IR through so you’ll get somewhat washed out images (from the examples I’ve seen.). My expectation is that post conversion the camera will be dedicated to the purpose you converted it (that why I didn’t convert a $2k camera.) I primarily wanted the HIE look, i.e. only IR light longer than 830nm, but if I had that filter installed inside the camera I couldn’t do the “aerochrome” color IR look (prior to this all my infrared photography was on film so I think in terms of the look of various IR films.). So I went with the 590nm filter which means, filterless I get the Aerochrome look, but I can easily stack a 830nm filter. It’s a little more cumbersome to shoot B&W IR but not bad. Right now I’m using a 40mm XS lens primarily (with a 27mm filter), but the camera bag has a 21 limited and a 70 limited which both take a 49mm filter. I’ve been very pleased with the results. I’ll see if I can post something later.

the K-01 returned home from Isaac Szabo for conversion to IR, and so far, its pretty d@mn cool! I can confirm that the XS 40 and the limited 70 work quite well--no hotspot. I'll have to get used to framing shots using the LCD on the back instead of a viewfinder (my one gripe on an otherwise nice little camera), but so far it feels like a poor man's HIE, with aerochrome thrown into the bargain.

are you happy with switching to FF?

I like having my lenses do what I expect of them. As a 95% film shooter, I have a bunch of film-era lenses that work fine on APS-C, but give you a very different field of view compared to my film camera. So I need to have an ultra wide lens to get a moderate wide field of view. In some cases, like using the Pentax macro bellows and slide copier, it actually makes it very difficult to find a lens that fits and works within the bellows limit of the setup. With FF, any of the 50mm lenses (preferably macro) works perfectly.

the cheap, $100 brand new XS arrived today from Japan, and is really new, but given that all the paperwork inside is in Japanese I assume I won't have any warranty. My K-01 is off being "modified" so I tested the lens on my K-3ii, and everything seems fine. Its definitely tiny, even compared to 40mm limited.

These were frequently called "contrast" filters because they shifted the representation of certain hues in the translation to B&W. Yellow 15, Orange 21, and Red 25 progressively darkened the skys (blue) while having less impacy on the ground. Some B&W shooters I know have a yellow 15 on their lens all the time. Yellow Green (forget the number) could be used with caucasion faces, green to lighten foliage, blue to turn your red-rose black (a color filter lightens the things with the same color and darkens things on the opposite side of the color wheel.) I'm sure these things can easily be done in photoshop, unless like me, you want to capture the image in-camera.

I just bout a K-01 from someone here with the plan of sending in for IR conversion (I'm down to my last few rolls of HIE, so I want a good IR alternative.) That camera is on its way to me soon, but I was surprised to see that there are a fair amount of Japanese sellers still selling new 40mm XS lenses, and for a hair over $100. I really don't need the lens--I have a 40mm limited--but it seems so suited to the camera. Since I like longer lenses usually, it would have been cool to have done similar with the 70mm limited (if you remove the hood the 70mm limited is pretty pancake too.)

they have timed entry reservations for Arches at the moment, which was perfect for me--I just went at 5pm when entry opened back up normally. None of the other NP/NMs I visited had that last week (Mesa Verde, Canyonlands, Natural Bridges, Capitol Reef, Grand Escalante, Bryce, North Rim, Lees Ferry, South Rim.)

I've had some good results from the Pentax 24-90mm. Its a film era lens so it covers fullframe and has an aperture ring. I also have a Tamron 28-200, also film era. The Tamron feels a little better built than the Pentax, but optically not as good. Both can easily be found for under $200.

well, try it anyway--don't trust a random guy on the internet, but you may google some of your older bodies to see if any have any sensitivity above 720nm.

EDIT: here is a company that can convert a K-01, and they replace the IR blocking filter with a IR passing filter, but it isn't cheap: https://www.lifepixel.com/shop/our-services/infrared-camera-conversions/pent...red-conversion

I tried a IR filter (a R72 to be specific) on my K3 II a number of years back, and the sensor wasn't sensitive enough to IR to make much of an image after 3 minutes open shutter. Most (all?) modern digital cameras have a built in IR filter to remove it from your image. There are some services that will permanantly modify a camera for you to make it IR sensitive, then the R72 might work. Buy you're unlikely to get the "wood effect" without a modified camera (or a film camera with IR sensitive film.)

An amazing MZ-S feature

I’ll add that while the manual says to “add a couple extra frames” to the number to prevent overlapping frames, my MZ-S is accurate enough that I’ve done this a dozen or more times, used the same number, and I can barely see a difference in the size of the gap between frames.

I tested mine four or five times this spring when I got the camera and found it accurate, and I used it that way this past summer when I took it as my main camera to Moscow and St. Petersburg Russia. I was changing between 100, 400, and 1600 speed film without any issues. I just kept a small sharpie in the camera bag, and whenever I removed an incomplete roll I marked it on the tongue of the leader. Some of my rolls had scratched out numbers two or three times and it all worked perfectly,

One of the British newspapers (the guardian, I think) had a long running thin in the letters section where people would write in about how they used the canisters.

I have some rolls of HIE in the standard black with grey caps Kodak canisters, but there is a sticker on the cap warning about opening and loading in total darkness, so light blocking was once used, even it most film didn’t notice.

New toy. I don't know if I'll like the TLR experience, but I want to try it, and this was way, way cheaper than a Rollei.
