Pentax does still have the old design materials, at least some of them, because they mentioned in the first Film Project video that they have been digitizing them.

But they have also said in numerous occasions that they are making a new camera, not reproducing an old model. This makes sense, because a major motivation of this project is for the people involved to learn how it is done. That was also emphasized in the videos. So I think the fact that they are designing a camera from scratch is half of the point.

When you think about it, the materials, technologies, manufacturing techniques and costs associated with them must be very different from 30 or 40 years ago. What was the optimum way of making a film camera was in those days is probably very different from what it would be today, so the design decisions would be different.

In fact, most of the speculation I’ve seen in Japan about the November Pentax Channel event is that it probably won’t have anything to do with the Film Project. Nothing about film is mentioned in the agenda, and in the past, TKO has not been part of these events, instead preferring to hold events of his own. This is just one-hour event. There is no way TKO could keep it brief enough to fit into a 10-minute slot. He’s a talker.

So it’s possible that a J-Limited / Film Project event will be announced separately. It hasn’t happened so far, though. Sometimes TKO tweets about events before they are announced, but I refuse to join “X” just to read them, so I don’t see that any more.

The film camera project was only announced on 20th December 2022 - ten months and sixteen days ago. That's really not much time at all in product R&D terms, even if they're re-using elements of older products. If they manage to bring at least one film camera to market some time in 2024, I'd say that's a fair achievement.

Maybe they are reviving an old compact but don't have access to the old designs, components and/or tooling. I doubt that's the case, but we just don't know. More likely, I suspect none of the old compacts matches their vision for a new film camera... but I'm just guessing.

No matter what Ricoh does or when it does it, there'll be a subset of folks who find fault (I think they actually get a kick out of it). I'm hopeful the project will result in one or more new film cameras next year, and I think it (or they) will be uniquely Pentax in nature. If it takes longer, or Ricoh subsequently decides not to complete the project for some reason, well... that's OK. No harm, no foul :)

Turn the Data Switch off. You'll find it on the bottom of the camera. This is used for data backs so information can be seen in the black square.

Yeah, that's the part which bothered me the most. That resource, that communication channel, already exists, right here. That Petapixel skims over it is fair game, but that Ricoh doesn't acknowledge PF is a big oversight in my opinion.

March 17 Article on Pentax Film Project

The 5th article is now published.
https://barfout.jp/feature/5334/

It is an interview with a photographer.

Not much is said about the camera, but Iikawa-san makes a vague comment on the lens.

"Iikawa: I can’t go into details (laughs). We wanted to make it a little different from the lenses that have been designed to maximize performance. This is because that is what we learned from looking at the photos of the young people. The point is how to use the tools, and what is available at the time is used well. And the person’s personality comes out in the way he or she uses it. So rather than just making a lens that takes beautiful pictures, we would like to make one that has a certain flavor."

So to me, that sounds more the Limited lens philosophy, or possibly the thinking that led to the recent FA 50/1.4 Classic, retaining the flare on purpose.

Yes. They are actually well known people, especially the young female actress in #3.

I’m not sure what you expect in terms of “news”. They are doing videos with subtitles, monthly articles translated into English and have shown a prototype.

We know the concept they are trying to achieve and the probable order of cameras to be developed. We know that a 3D printed prototype exists. We know development of the winding mechanism is complete but not the lens. We also have some insights into the process of transferring knowledge from old plans and retired staff.

When do you ever get this kind of frankness about an unreleased camera from a manufacturer? They are being really transparent because they are using the development process and the challenges they face as a marketing tool, which is a pretty innovative idea actually.

That is a whole lot for only 25 USD.

I could spend a good hour watching the storefront alone. Well inside, they probably would have to carry me out at closing time. Envious of the Tokyo Pentaxians that have this treat to visit.

This morning I called by the Pentax Club House to have the sensor on my K3 III cleaned and wanted to share my experience. Firstly, I arrived a little early, and given the oppressive heat in Tokyo today, the staff let me wait inside before the official opening. I dropped off the camera, had a coffee, and after 45 minutes, it was all done.*

Along with the sensor cleaning, the service also includes a general operation check, cleaning of the mirror, viewfinder screen, mount contacts, and exterior body, and they will also update to the latest firmware if need be. The price is very reasonable at 3300 yen ($25 USD). The staff member also cleaned the lens and did an operation check on my Pentax DA 20–40mm, which was a nice touch.

They will clean the sensor for free if the camera is still under warranty. Overall, a very professional service.

One thing to mention about that translation is that the Japanese language uses the same grammar to express "when" and "if". Listening to the Japanese in context, the sense is definitely more like "if" because he stresses the word "moshi", which indicates a hypothetical statement. He is still being non-committal about the SLR.

Having said that, I feel like the whole Film Project sounds less tentative now. In the past they used disclaimer-like phrases, such as "It might all come to nothing", but not now. I think the first camera is almost certain to be made, and probably quite soon. If that goes well, the advanced compact and the SLR look very possible.

I went to the exhibition earlier today and it was quite interesting. TKO (Suzuki-San) was there and I had a fairly long talk with him about film cameras in general and the prototype.

Obviously he’s a professional and a representative of his company, so he’s not going to start randomly revealing secret stuff. I didn’t get a glimpse of the whole camera or anything like that. It stayed partially revealed in its box under glass.

What he did say was that the film winding mechanism is functional and a result of a lot of careful tuning of the way it should feel, done with the help of retired Pentax engineers. Certainly the mechanism has a lot of metal in it. I’m not sure if it’s all metal, but TKO said it has a lot of metal parts. The clear case is not the final product but a 3D printed prototype. So I don’t think it’ll much should be read into the final finish of the product based on the prototype case.

The lens and focusing mechanism are still under development so we have to wait longer to find out about that. I think it’s fair to say this will be a mostly mechanical camera, without a lot of electronics.

The photos were quite nice. They are shots of the coast by a young photographer from Kagawa prefecture. Apparently the photographer will be in town to attend the exhibition next weekend, in case any Tokyo residents want to meet her.

Regarding film itself, he talked enthusiastically about Ilford’s new Ilfocolor film. It’s cool that a new color film is coming into the market. Ilford is a collaborator in the exhibition.

I’m not a professional photographer; I was a professional software developer - now I am retired. If something takes several weeks, well I have the time. My photographs are developed at my local camera store - they develop C-41 film every weekday, and traditional B&W every Friday; they are two fifteen minute drives from our house anytime I need to have film developed. Kodak is gone? I don’t know who is producing it, but both of my film cameras are loaded right now with film labeled ‘Kodak’. Yes, digital pictures are sharper, but I don’t want sharpness; the DoF markings on my lenses assume film, and that is what I have. I don’t have a K-1 - it would never fit in my budget.

Ricoh Imaging are holding an exhibition 'It's time for film!' at Kitamura Camera in Shinjuku from 1 July to 31 July.

This exhibition features photographs taken by Shiori Iwakura on black-and-white film (a first for her) as well as on colour film. Cameras used: Pentax LX and Pentax 67.

The exhibition also features Pentax film cameras, prototypes and drawings of film cameras, plus "one more thing". :)

Digital Camera Watch published an interesting article about this exhibition:

【イベントレポート】開発中のフィルムカメラ試作機をサプライズ展示…PENTAX特別企画展「It’s time for film!」 - デジカメ Watch (original article in Japanese)

[Event Report] Surprise exhibition of film camera prototype under development... PENTAX Special Exhibition "It's time for film!" – Digital Camera Watch (Google translation)

Not only are Ricoh Imaging exhibiting past film cameras...

Pentax SP

Pentax Metalica and Memorica

...and drawings... ...

including drawings of the new manual winding mechanism...

...they're also showcasing a film camera mock-up / prototype.

Those who'd plan to visit the exhibition shall note that the historical film cameras and the new film camera prototype are only on display on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays when staff are present.

My personal Pentax problem - the 3:2 aspect ratio
Posted By biz-engineer
Replies: 52
3:2 is a good aspect ratio for the sensors in digital because:
- for portrait oriented exposures, it can be cropped to 4:3 without too much loss
- for landscape oriented exposures, it can be cropped to 16:9 without too much loss.
Unless you use a camera mostly for portrait (e.g. medium format in studio), you lose a lot of sensor area by cropping a 4:3 sensor to 16:9 .
You could also have a camera with a 16:9 sensor, and it would be great for taking landscape oriented pictures, but you'd lose a lot of sensor real estate when using the camera in portrait orientation and having to crop to 4:3 , 5:4 or 1:1.
If you use the camera equally for landscape and portrait oriented shots, 3:2 is one of the best tradeoff there is.

I can't imagine how much it would cost to produce a P67 camera today. I did notice that many camera service shops do not deal with the P67 II. Too complicated.

Ricoh Imaging will hold an exhibition 'It's time for film!' at Kitamura's (Shinjuku) from 1 July to 31 July.

This exhibition will feature photographs taken by photographer Shiori Iwakura, one of the sympathisers of the film camera project, on black-and-white film (a first for her) as well as on colour film. Cameras used: Pentax LX and Pentax 67. Negative black-and-white film rolls and photographic paper were provided by Ilford Japan, which gives us an idea of whose film rolls could be sold in due course by Ricoh Imaging on their Japanese websites.

The exhibition will also feature Pentax film cameras, prototypes and drawings of film cameras as well as back issues of the Barfout magazine.

The Pentax film camera ecosystem is gradually taking shape.

Another MZ Mirror Thread

All done! I managed it without recourse to a soldering iron and without following any instructions, just from what I remember from earlier tasks. Not having to get the flash capacitors out of the way was the main difference between this and the MZ3/MZ5. Here's the procedure (sorry, without photos)
  • Remove all outer housing parts

  • Remove baseplate and loose gear wheels

  • Remove the screw holding the DOF preview button bracket and push the bracket to one side

  • Remove lens mount, remove lens release button bracket, refit lens mount (more on this later)

  • Remove the three accessible screws on the gear box

  • You will then be able to open box at the bottom far enough to remove the lower grey gear wheel to access and remove the split motor gear wheel.

  • Getting the new wheel on is a bit of a faff, but doable with some patience. I put a small amount of silicone lube on the end of the spindle with a cocktail stick. Once it's on and positioned, return the grey wheel to the box, replace the box screws and reverse the dismantling process.

Regarding the lens mount, the lens release bracket blocks the gearbox from opening sufficiently, which is why it needs to come off. You refit the mount to prevent the ring that controls the aperture from dropping out while you are working on the body. I forgot about this and spent more time getting that back in than I did fixing the motor gear. There are two long springs that sit behind it and connect to the ring and the body. It's very fiddly getting these connected at the four locations. In the end, I actually glued the springs to the ring with a tiny bit of superglue applied to the stud with the end of a cocktail stick.

I was hoping to be able to make a small upgrade to the M, by swapping in an adjustable diopter eyepiece from another MZ series body, but neither of those in my parts kit (MZ-5N and MZ-6) would fit. It might be possible, but the task has "repair to death" written all over it!
